Thanks for the interest.  I found an all-aluminum $200 5.3 LS4 out of a MonteCarloSS, so that is my current plan.
Life has really prevented this boat getting done so far, but have new shop now and it needs to get done.
I'm wondering how to get the water cooled exhaust for the LS and hoping I can use the 455 manifolds I have.

2
I picked up a $200 5.3 FWD LS4 to put in my jetboat project.
I have some olds 455 water cooled log exhaust and was thinking of trying to adapt them to the LS exhaust.
I put the LS headers up to them, and they are not even close, of course the joined center ports is wrong, but overall its a pretty bad match.  It would take a thick adapter to route the flow to the 455 parts.  But could I do it?  The 455 parts are nice.

I also have some 302 water exhaust manifolds, they are pretty janky lots of welded patches, but it would adapt easier.

Or I could fabricate my own using the SS headers I have.  This would be a lot more work than just port adapters.
This was my plan until I found my 455 manifolds buried in a box.

Buying LS water cooled exhaust is more than the entire boat trailer and engine, so not an option,

Wow, can't believe I started this project in 2014, so it has been 10 years now!  And I still have the boat and it still doesn't have an engine in it.
I am determined to get it working for the spring of 2025.  Was even hoping to get it working this month, but the Ford 3.8 V6 I picked up to use turned out to have no compression in 3 cylinder and had bad valve guides. They are 200hp and compact and light.  But no time to fix it.

My current plan is to put in a W8 engine from a Passat I picked up years ago.  It was for a Porsche 914 project, but I have sold that car,
and can't think of anything else I can put this engine in.  Being they are at this point very rare engines with no parts available, seems ideal for a boat that is not run many hours a year, so it should last a long time.  And they look awesome with the big fat cylinder heads and had a great F1 kind of v8 sound.  275hp.

I am thinking of two different issues.  The first is the coupling from the jet to the flywheel.  I have a u-joint coupler that came with the jet.  It seems it is very heavy duty. I want to move the engine further back and the "driveshaft" moves the engine forward a good amount.
I am familiar with jetski's couplers, they are much more compact.  Was thinking maybe they can't handle the power, but I looked at the newer yamaha ski's with 300hp and they use the same style of couplers.  The other idea is to use the driveshaft coupler used in a BMW,
Any input on these ideas appreciated.

The other thing is I want to eliminte the alternator and starter on the engine, and replace it with a single motor like a hybrid system does.
I have the generator motor from a prius and am looking into attaching it on the jet input, so make the coupler on the jet side also a motor/generator, that can spin the motor to start it and also work as an alternator.  And it could also add power on takeoff for a short time.

Anyways, it may be I can't get going on this until next year, but I've got the boat all cleaned up and can do some work on it now.

So I'm finally back to this project, trying to get it functional.
I've put aside the rotary, and will be putting in the all-aluminum 3.4L Sho V8 instead.
Was hoping I could get the stock computer to run it, but no luck, so I'm now doing my own engine controls.

What makes this interesting is now I don't need to use all the stock parts, so I'm going to change
the intake manifold to a set of 8 velocity stacks.  :)

Gelcoat / Paint / Fireberglass Repair / Re: fiberglass mold help???
« on: September 10, 2013, 09:35:56 PM »
That will be a tough repair.  I think you are right to consider making a mold and get a whole new section to replace the damaged area.   I don't see how you can use the other side of the boat.   I'd try to find another good identical boat,
and make a mold off it and them make the repair section from the mold.   It won't harm the boat to make a mold if done right.    Replacing the hull is certainly a better bet for a good outcome.
You can do it the 'hard way', it will be very time consuming doing all the shaping and sanding to get it right without the replacement hull section.  my 2 cents.

The boat paint job is pretty much finished.  Pics below.
I took the advice and used some blue metalflake as border around the black squares,
and liked it so much I made the middle squares blue with black border, and added the blue strip above the rubrail.

I'm redoing the trailer now with bunks instead of the rollers.  Just painted it orange today.
I need to replace a couple of the square ubolts for the leaf springs, any suggestions on local sources?
I can order online some SS, but need to get the trailer back under the boat tomorrow.

Also included a pic of the twin turbo setup.   As it is now the fall, I'm most likely not going to do any more
work on it until the spring.

Slow progress on this project!
I've been building the twin-turbo 12A rotary engine.  Never built a rotary before, and it took 4 tries to get the seals right,
but finally got it, now holds 14psi in the water jackets.   Still fabricating the twin turbo exhaust manifolds,
here is picture of the early going.

But have taken a break from the engine work, and wanted to finish the hull repaint.
I've stripped all the stuff from the hull, removed all the decals and sanded it.
Now I need to paint it.   Here is what I'm thinking for the design.  Basically going orange black and white as the theme.
Got some nice burnt orange vinyl to accent my seats that I will be making.

Yeah, heat exchanger might be the best approach, can make the jet water without any small openings
so it won't clog, though still need some kind of filter I assume.
It will require a water pump for the engine, the 12a pump is one big heavy cast-iron pump
that I was looking forward to getting rid of.  Maybe I can setup an electric one instead?
Don't want to run a belt on the engine.
The plan is to combine the alternator and starter with a brushless motor (no sparks)
direct coupled to the front shaft

10
I've been reading how to setup the plumbing from different sources.
Unlike most V8 setups, I'll be running a 12A rotary engine.
The water jacket that surrounds the rotors, and has 1/4in holes
to slow down the water.   If they plug up, the motor will be toast very quickly.
The rotary also uses an oil cooler, as 1/3 of the cooling is from the oil.
I'm also considering adding an intercooler for the turbo.

What I think all this means is that I need to have pretty clean water
so nothing clogs up.   What I think I need is just a simple screen mesh filter,
and was thinking a Y strainer will do the job:

I'm concerned about how fast it will plug up, particularly if I go with a finer mesh, like 20 microns?
And will I get enough flow with such a filter?
It seems I will also want a pressure release valve as well in front of it if it blocks, something cheap and simple
like a water heater safety valve at 150psi, there are others at lower pressure too.
I have a JF pump, so the filter and pressure release can be put outside the hull.
I was even thinking maybe I could create a custom large huge screen filter instead of a tiny one as above to get more flow.
btw, is that a 1/2 NPT thread on the pump water outlet?

I understand the way to keep the flow up and pressure down is to not create any restrictions
in the engine area.  This might be hard for the rotary engine as described above.  It also uses some simple o-rings
to seal the rotor housings, I suspect these will not tolerate any high pressure water,
so should I consider a pressure bypass?    All this sounds like a lot of complicated plumbing.  :(

I appreciate any feedback.

Jet Pumps / Painting the Berkeley Jet
« on: July 09, 2013, 10:40:39 PM »
What is needed to paint the Berkeley Jet?
I've seen one or two painted, it looks quite cool, but what is involved?
The white paint is on pretty good, just sand it and paint it??
Is this a good idea, or will it peel?   What kind paint?  2-part and clear?
Thanks, JackB

Have the fiberglass work for the jet install pretty much done, just need to drill all the mounting holes,
and some painting.
It turned out I needed another 5 degrees of angle when I measured it, so I added some wedges to the mount.

Picked up a grate and made the mount for it from some 1/8in stainless steel plate I had on hand,
as the start of the input tunnel construction.   Used some thick fiberglass pieces from an old jetski hull
as the top and side peices, and epoxy/glassed it all.  Here are the pics for your viewing pleasure? :)

I've gone back to the Mazda 12A twin turbo rotary engine plan, the flat 6 engine is just too wide,
and I didn't want any more work having to cut up and reglass the sides of the engine area.

Cut hole in perfectly good hull, then made that big hole even bigger with a router.
The board to fill it slips into the routed slot.
It seems from other posts I've found that the pump should not be mounted straight with the keel,
but angled up 5%, that is about what the existing transom angle is close.

Thanks for all the tips. Doing some research now and think I might have found found a couple of things so far. As far as the exhaust goes, is it legal to just run straight zoomie drag headers or do they have to be water cooled like the Bassett headers?

I don't think there are any laws for boat exhaust, if they don't go through the transom heat isn't a fire issue.

A blown hemi would look sweet !!

Time to get back to this project!
Trying out positioning of the jet.  I assume that I want the ride plate level on the same plane
as the bottom of the hull, is this right?

And as has been pointed out this is an insert jet.  I have not seen any pics of them closeup how
they are installed in OEM configurations, anyone have some pics?
Is it important to be able to remove the jet?  Can it be serviced while still in the boat,
or must it be removed?  Is a press needed to get out the shaft bearings?
Thanks for any help, I have almost no experience with jets, but I will by the end of this project! :)

Looking SWEET!

I was looking into making a custom tank that would fit in the V under my floor to free up space,
and found that you can make tanks from fiberglass, but you must use vinylester resin, not polyester.

I don't like aluminum tanks because ethanol can eat them up over time, and I like to keep that fuel as an option.
Being able to shape a glass tank to any form can be quite useful.

I think the v6 Marlins were bigger, I haven't actually found much info on the hull, but no matter,
it won't resemble the original boat when I'm done.   O0

Making room for people and not the engine is a big issue.  Outboards are ideal in this regard.
I bought a 12JF insert pump, so the jet is moved back quite a bit.
The pump looks to be in good shape, impeller has no nicks etc, no noticeable shaft play,
but how can I really tell if its good?  Should I dismantle it to check it out?
The tag says it has A impeller if still original.

I've been considering many different engines.  A bought a rx7 12A rotary I wanted to use,
turbocharge it,EFI, but in attempt to make things easier, I bought a Subaru EG33, flat 6,
that should work with stock efi, no turbo.   The flat 6 might make it possible to put seating
on top of it.  maybe.  :screwy:

pics?  hull is in storage at present, but pic before parting it, the pump and eg33 pics for your visual enjoyment.  :)

Hulls / Re: Flipin a hull
« on: February 18, 2013, 04:50:05 PM »
On my 15ft boat, I put some rollers (cheap harbor freight wheels without the tires, just rims)
in the ceiling rafters in my garage, and ran straps around the hull.
Then I could roll it over by myself.  However, I only really put it up around 60-degrees, was enough to work
on the bottom on that side.

Projects / 16ft Open Bow Project
« on: February 18, 2013, 11:21:35 AM »
I thought I'd start a topic on my boat project.
I'm one to do things differently, and this boat project is no exception.

My previous power boats have been outboards, but this time I want a jet boat.
I like to beach my boat and go into shallow water, and I want a nice swim platform in the back this time.
But also have kids and want an open bow.
Not many of those with jet boats.
Given the boat sits 99% of the time at my house. I didn't want too big of a boat either.

I'm also a cheap do-it-yourself bastard.  I picked up an 16ft open bow 1981 Marlin with 4-cyl I/O,
and decided to make this my jet project.  Sold the engine and outdrive for more than I paid for the boat,
and have allocated a meager $1,000 to build the jet version.

So cheap, fast, easy, pick two --- the two are cheap and easy.  Only looking for 40mph.

Anyway enough for now, I've been collecting parts, but the build won't start until spring.

Cheers,
JackB
