Looks awesome! I really want to dive into my pump. I think its all screwed up but there is not a lot of info for a large 21' jet with delta pad.

« on: June 17, 2022, 03:32:13 pm »I went ahead and pulled it and now I have the engine on a stand. I haven?t cracked it open yet so im not sure what previous works been done to it, if any. I hit up a local machinist about working the heads a little bit but he?s dragging his feet so I?ll probably need to find another guy. Im no engine builder so bear with me I don?t know crap about how to make power I just know how to pull a motorI just want to get more speed maybe, 55 to 60 mph and still be reliable as possible. I?ll probably tear into it this weekend or next and try to identify what the internals parts are looking like and see what I?m really working with and post a better update then.
Sorry, forgot about this site for a bit. What did you find out?

Interesting. Stock GM 502 block? Which brand / type head gasket? Where on the gasket did the failure happen? Head bolts or head studs?

Went from flat tappet cam to hydraulic roller. And went from peanut heads to 702 heads.
So my old plugs won't work. Looking for recommendations on what plugs to run. Motor is in a 21 foot open bow.

Oh, and verify timing and that the carb is getting full throttle. 4000 still seems a bit low.

Since I have some other projects going already, I’m just going to pull the 350 this winter and clean it up and go through some things and drop it back in. I wouldn’t mind doing a few budget friendly upgrades while I have it out. If you have any suggestions I’m all ears.
If it were me....
Before pulling engine do a hot compression check. Once apart verify compression, deck height etc and optimize on rebuild.
Mild port work on the heads and fill the center crossover ports. -since you are going to have it apart? -
Verify cam and valvetrain, optimize for your boat if needed.
check and optimize all oil drain back locations in the block. ( how apart do you plan to go to cleaning it up? )
Check and optimize exhaust system.

As mentioned, these are the exhaust crossover designed to heat the carb for cold weather. There are ways to stop that but most people just dont paint the manifold and you would never notice.
Also the torker is a fine manifold for a jet boat especially since you already own it. if you are looking to just spend money, performer is good for the RPMs you are running now, or a performer rpm would be for a hotter motor.

It is common for the log manifolds to crack there. People cut the flange to keep them from cracking and use the washer for clamping, its a little more "roughly" done then others i have seen. Just run them down to a machine shop and they should be able to true them on the big belt sander for like $20

That explains the heads. I have a suburban with 454 at my dads maybe I’ll look into swapping that into the boat later down the road because I wanna go fast haha
Hey there! Dont count the olds out yet! haha. brother in law has an 88 commander with a 350 that i think is only rated for 265 hp and it turns i think he said 4300 or 4400 with a berkeley A impeller at the colorado river (lower elevation but hot crappy air)
You shouldnt have too much trouble getting the olds up to 55 mph if you were so inclined before attempting a BBC swap.

When i had my first olds on the Dyno, i had a 7qt moroso pan (car) and the dyno operator put all 7 qts in and a quart of comp cams break in additive. After break in we made a first pull forgetting that we had the extra oil in it. Oops! haha oil pressure was good but the pressure dropped all the way as rpms increased. realizing the error right away, we drained the oil (15w40) and put in the 20w50 i planned to run. Oil pressure increased with rpm and gained 15 hp as the crank was hitting the oil and foaming it, even with the thicker oil

I had a 455 once that after about 6 months between having it on the water, the 2 - 90 fittings that went into the front water ports to the block had plugged with white powder. Launched off the trailer, got hot, floated to the shore and started troubleshooting, found the problem, cleaned them out with a screw driver and slowly added water with a water bottle. fired it back up and never had a problem again.

« on: April 14, 2021, 02:56:44 pm »Bought a Kona 18 ft jet boat with a 350 olds in it. First boat so excuse my ignorance on part names and such. Mechanically inclined but never done a boat motor swap as the 350 was hydrolocked and I don’t wanna dive into a rebuild at the moment and decided to get a new motor for it. Found a good deal on a 460 Ford and just wanted to know what would go into doing a swap. Would I need new pump to engine joint, angles for mounting and just some other info from the experts on here haha. Motor I’m looking at has everything carb, distributor, headers, mounts etc. thanks in advance and hoping I came to the right place !

you might find that swapping to another brand motor might be more work then rebuild? maybe not. depends on $$ too. good luck and keep us in the loop through the process.
350 olds is a stout motor.

personal opinion is since you have the holley, NO WAY would i spend and money buying a Edelbrock for it. I would focus on making the holley work. I have had both a 1000 cfm hp holley and a modified 750 DP holley on our olds and both pulled 5100 rpm so....

you need to find out what your timing is doing.
shoot the timing at 4000, 4500 etc and then you will know if it is still advancing. list your spring colors so we can help get yours correct.

Awesome! if your worried about a full droop you can always ask tom about the HPH from place diverter. it has only 3.5* up where the droop has 8.5* up angle
