Coworker liked watching my videos and said his neighbor has one and is interested in fixing it up now. His neighbor told him he can have it

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Finally thank you guys
« on: August 12, 2020, 07:06:25 AM »
Boat ran great. Has a slight hesitation around  around 4600 4700 rpm. Im hoping its a rev limiter that im not aware of or the secondaries but i feel confident that it will perform well on the river. Im still going to get an MSD unit for piece of mind although i didn't notice anything with the Ebay HEI. Thank you to everyone thats given me advice.  Definitely some fine tuning but it idled well and responded well so im happy. Clocked at 48 mph at 4700 rpm but i let off and cruised easily at 4500 rpm around 45mph.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Revs up then drops
« on: August 04, 2020, 09:40:09 PM »
When i rev it, it revs high and good. But if i rev it and hold it, itll bog down from 4000 to 3000 and run sloppy. My guess is the carb isnt openning the secondary cause its a vaccum advance. I also dont know where to put the vacuum port on the manifold to tune the carb with a gauge. The previous owner had a port already in place on the very top behind the carb. I used that just to see what happened and i got movement close to the green zone but only got the highest reading with the mixture screws turned all the way in. Im stumped

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / I just cannot catch a break
« on: July 24, 2020, 09:32:55 PM »
Out of the water started fine but i noticed black smoke. Then i really noticed the smoke when it was in the water cause my exhaust is in the water. Never noticed it at home but maybe just didnt notice it. It didnt feel good at all. It seems to be holding back and wont idle. Im starting to think its a pump issue. As soon as i took it out of the water it starts and sounds great. Brought it home started it again just to see whats up and again sounds great but doesnt feel great in the water

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / I think we got it
« on: July 20, 2020, 09:02:48 PM »
After fixing the loose wire in the distributor and replacing the damaged wire. I gave it another try and she is idling consistently, revving very well so i think this may be it. Thank you to everyone hopefully a lake afternoon run after work later this week after an oil change.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / She runs but now this
« on: July 18, 2020, 07:28:09 AM »
Got the fuel system working and she did start right up then this happened. Check out the yellow wire. I checked voltage and it all looks good. I think its just a defective dizzy.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Almost there
« on: July 12, 2020, 05:41:45 PM »
Time has not been on my side. I got the new exhaust gaskets on today and the new fuel filter with new lines. AN lines are next whenever i get to do the new tanks. Ill be leaving the rtv to dry correctly which gives me a chance to get some fuel over here.

I also messed up when i brought the lines home i put them under the cover on the seat. Now theyre stained and i cannot get this off. The seats are starting to crack so i guess new upholstery on just the seats might do me right

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Octane choice
« on: June 29, 2020, 05:38:50 PM »
Quick question. I got into a discussion today at work. This dude was telling me he has to run 91 octane on his stock 460 for his boat. I told him i run 87 because the previous owner told me thats what he ran and it doesnt matter if I put in it, its gonna eat it up regardless.
I have a 460 with a rv cam. What should i be running but most importantly Why?
I dont know anything about my compression thanks guys

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Holley 4160 help
« on: June 23, 2020, 08:59:27 PM »
Anyone that knows about Holleys please. So as im putting everything back i realized that on the secondary side im missing the Metering plate BACKING PLATE. It was never there. Should be a gasket, Backing plate, gasket, metering plate not block like the primary then the float and bowl assembly. How bad is this going to be not having the backing plate

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Came up with this bright idea
« on: June 21, 2020, 07:45:53 AM »
Got everything i need to a complete rebuild on the old Holley here. After watching several videos i learned that i was missing the inlet filters which came in yesterday and boy oh boy. What are those things? Brass filters? Anyway... i decided to get some small tubs so i dont get anything mixed up or lost. Wish me luck. I see new tanks coming in a month or so we'll see what the new job brings in. Im starting at the San Manuel project with Penta is any of you are out there let me know. Oh and Happy Fathers Day guys.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Quadrajet or holley 3310-4
« on: June 18, 2020, 05:31:04 PM »
The previous owner of the boat has been awesome and gave me a quadrajet he had laying around. Now the question is which one should i run or should i sell both and get a 750 cfm with a mechanical secondary.
Im trying to learn more about the quadrajet cause i know absolutely nothing about it

I thought i noticed water when adjusting the float but it was hard to tell. While taking the carb off today i noticed drops of water in the manifold so i thought maybe condensation. So i found a clean clear container and let the pump line run into it and found this.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Now im getting a flat spot
« on: June 04, 2020, 05:18:47 PM »
I took the carb apart a bit and cleaned it out before putting everything back together. And im not seeing any fuel squirt like before when it was off. Im also getting a flat spot when i get it for a sec. If i accelerate slowly its fine. It also wont start unless i dribble a little fuel in it

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Few issues during yesterday run
« on: May 20, 2020, 07:48:30 AM »
First was a back fire from the carb again at first start. Thought i had the timing dialed but it is just not happenings. Ill be getting a new distributor but i want dependability over performance. Its also the second time i hear that my carb isnt the greatest for a boat setup due to the vacuum secondary but i did do some youtube mods to it and the boat performed better than ever with the rpms getting up to 4800 for a short sec when i got on it just to see if the mods worked. I was never able to get it passed 4000 but she woke up yesterday. Then after some laps and some fishing pauses it started acting up and eventually wouldnt start.
So my main question. Distributor and carb setup up on a bbf 460 with no motor upgrades that im aware of. Dependability over performance

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / In need of a trailer for rent
« on: May 20, 2020, 07:25:34 AM »
Being that i cant dock my boat over night anywhere near me. I think renting another trailer might be my next option to get my boat off the trailer so i can repaint mine. Anyone got a trailer i can use for a couple of days in Nuevo Ca.
