Here's my new rig. It's a '78 Eliminator Bubbledeck. Based on what I've read I believe it is an SS model. It has full stringers, no subfloor, and it came from the Eliminator with headers. It has a Ford 460 with a Berk JC-A. It appears mostly unmolested too!!
I drove up to Santa Rosa to pick this thing up the day after getting home from my last tour. Based on the pics I got from the owner and the description he gave I felt confident making the long haul. Luckily it was MOST of what the PO described to me. SoCalPSD was a huge help while checking it over before I purchased it.
As soon as I got it home I removed the interior and gave it a thorough inspection and cleaning. I must have scored boat karma with the amount of issues Titty twister had because there haven't been any surprises with this boat...YET. While I checked the boat over before purchasing it there was water in the oil which is a huge red flag and it almost turned me away. The spring in the bassett T was broken so it fed WAY too much water to the headers. I ASSume the motor sucked water in that way. I ran a compression test at the guys house and all cylinders were an even 120. I heard the motor should be somewhere around 150, but that 120 isn't bad especially if it has been sitting a while. However, I could be wrong.. I took a chance and decided to buy the boat. The milky oil allowed me to haggle and I got out of there with a good deal. When I got the boat home I ran a leak down test and it didn't drop a single psi! That was a huge relief, so the next step was to change the oil. I went with the cheap stuff since this was basically a flush, but after running it on the trailer the oil was clear. I drained the cheap stuff and used Valvoline VR1 20w-50. If anyone thinks I should run anything different I'm all ears!! I replaced the cap, rotor, wires, plugs, and some fuel lines that I'm almost sure are original. I replaced the steering, throttle cable, shifter cable, transom seals, and bought a set of Hardin Marine gauges.
Onto the pics!! First pic is from the ad, the next couple are the day after I got it home, the last two are from the first outing to Elsinore.
