Jet Pumps / Re: What impeller ?
« on: January 05, 2019, 10:21:42 AM »
When i have them dyno with bigger carb, wonder if it would be worth changing cam to 106lsa or 108 to bring peek down, my other 514 peaks at 5500 but cant find that cam card.
Im keeping this boat,  selling southwind some day. Id like to push this one as hard as i can. Limits to delta bottom speed?has port matched victor. ..took me awhile to figure out how to reply.. Lol ...waiting to sell the existing 460 with 5hrs on it before pulling for new
You could swap the cam, but to what end? Your carburetor likely starved the engine for air at about the 5,000 rpm mark. A carburetor is rated at .5" vacuum at the plate. You are shooting for much closer to atmospheric pressure.

In all honesty, the member you need to message is Joe (flusher). He could probably get you headed down a logical path that will be both fiscally and mechanically sound...

Newbie,  sorry if i have posted in wrong place... My first post/cherry popped ect.. . Ive lurked and read almost every post for months. Butt.. Figured id just join and ask.. I will not be building my own pump- itll be ss but should i shoot for 9.5 and hope to pull 4700 or b/c and hope for 6500
Eliminator, bubble, 18'full stringer, no floor..530 bbf engine was tested exactly like it will be in boat..engine guy thought it was for prop boat :banghead:.should i have cam changed to shoot for max tq/lower rpm ..solid roller now
carb was only 750,  if cam change ill take dom carb off other boat and test.
Didnt want to call a pro shop yet and get stuck with salesman- not a tech ect
Whew that took me forever to type,  thanks

Any chance you can dyno with a bigger carburetor? The 750 is stupid short. You are deep into 950HP territory.

With the numbers you currently have, I would go with a stainless A and keep the RPMS down in the 5,300 RPM range, but I feel there is more left in that deal with more air. It is very difficult to over carburate a jet boat engine...

JMHO, if stuck with an as is, I would run an A, you simply don't have the torque numbers to pull a 9.5"

Do you guys have petcocks in place on your motors? I'm replacing a 454 with a another and the original motor has them installed. I've never had them on previous boats and would appreciate your thoughts.

I live in Mohave Valley, AZ and the boat will be stored inside in a climate controlled environment.

Thanks for your help
I feel they plug up much to easily.

I just use hex headed brass plugs.

Hulls / Re: Bahner hulls

Which hull?

Their boats were much better than their business practices...

As good as anything else out there in my opinion, I've owned two.

« on: December 20, 2018, 08:20:01 PM »
I've owned at least a dozen jet boats. Never had a wash over issue on any of them.

To answer your question, most acrylic and plastic shops can help you with this. It's quite a simple process. I've made several windshields.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Question?
« on: December 20, 2018, 05:21:24 PM »
MLS head gaskets are not very forgiving to an imperfect surface.  It's possible they can weep if the block and heads weren't specifically surfaced for their correct finish.  Unless you're running boost they're also overkill.  A composite gasket with stainless fire ring like the 17068 should be a good fit.

I agree that silicone on the head gasket is a no-no.

A light silicone smear around the water ports is a good idea on the intake and corresponding mating surface on the heads, with the intake gasket between the smears :)
Be careful using the term silicone. RTV only.

Silicone is for tub and shower surrounds...

Update: 1974 wiring and back yard mechanics were the cause. One of the thousands of splices to the fuel pump had corroded and shorted out. Causing fuel starvation. I thank everyone for the help. Ole girl will be getting completely rewired now.

So it ran with no fuel at all? That's crazy.

A few things to check.

Fuel pump, tank venting, fuel hose condition, filters (as said), garbage in the carburetors, water in the fuel, distributor cap and button, ignition timing (could have walked) and look for metal contaminated oil (camshaft flatsville)....

Good luck. Sweet looking boat.

That's great your feeling so good I hope that continues. Unfortunately its been the most pain ive ever experienced. I got hit on my Harley 3 months ago and tore all the tendons from the bone. They were able to get all but one back were they belong, the other had to be reattached in a different spot so they're taking it slow with me. Good news is after 3 months in a sling I got it off today and start physical therapy tomorrow!

I'm in for Woodys let me know and we can get in touch.
Damn... That hurts just to read.

Therapy is everything.

I broke my humerus, radius and ulna at the elbow, actually crushed the olecranon. They put a plate and a bunch of screws to put it back together. Also a small bone on my wrist (hurt as bad as the elbow)... Had the hardware removed after 8 months, shoulder was constant pain and ridiculous weakness.

My pain tolerance is pretty high, I normally just get annoyed at the lack of comfort more than the hurt.

I hope you start feeling normal soon. We definitely need to get together and have a beer.

Follow the therapists advice, those people are incredible. Take it slow and calculated.

Good luck.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Piston cylinder clearance
« on: December 11, 2018, 11:55:06 PM »
Food for thought on ring end gaps....

I was just at SEMA 2018 talking about this exact subject with one of the reps from United Engine Machine (ICON, Kieth Black, etc).  He mentioned he used to work at Perfect Circle so I asked him what he thought about larger ring end gaps as I've always added a few thousandths to the recommended spec for safety and have never had a problem with blowby.  He said PC actually ran tests on end gaps and in a dynmaic running engine they could not measure any difference in blowby from a 0-gap ring on up past .040" gap.  Static leakdown tests will disagree, but in a running dynamic engine there was ZERO measurable blowby difference.  Honing technique (pressure, speed, final finish, etc) has a much greater affect on ring seal and blowby.  The take away for me, and he concurred, was that larger gaps have no performance drawback but will save your motor if it gets hot.  I thought it was interesting the way I was taught by the "old timer" jived with a manufacturer's test.

I've always set pistons a hair on the loose side as well.  When I say hair I mean +.0005" or so.  Same rationale, building durability and a little wiggle room into the clearances.  I probably would be more conservative on a short skirt piston but Speed Pros have a long skirt and are much more forgiving.  I wanna say we put .0055" into my buddy's 429 Ford, but his compression was up over 11:1 and he runs it HARD.
One point to take this one step further.

The second ring is typically more of an oil control type thing.. As such, it's not uncommon that the gap on the number two ring is set slightly larger.

About the only negative with larger end gaps is increased carbon deposit potential contaminating the crankcase oil and causing potential ring sticking is the tune isn't quite dialed in...
Anyone that has experience with two stroke engines (apples and orange to a point) knows or has seen what I am referring to.

Just to further the food for thought.

I will read the box again when I get home. What should they be?
I actually put it together wrong in my head.

The word "if" in place of "of" derailed my brain... Lol

This is correct, .004"- .0045" per inch of bore is spot on.

It does help. The rings say to be .004 per one Inch If bore and it’s a 454 bored .30 over. What should I set the ring gap at?
Are you sure you read that correctly? What rings?
