Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: what oil to run
« on: December 08, 2010, 02:10:02 PM »
so ive had my boat for about 6 or 7 months and i have changed my oil once and its time to do it again. The guy who had it before me used 20/50,its a 454 and i have a 6qt pan is that a good weight to run in big block?

with the way boats run, i'd change out the pan. i now use vr1 20w50. a few years ago, i didnt change the oil all season and paid for it at the end by having a rebuild the motor.  :banghead:

A little more information is needed for you guys. When I bought the boat two months ago, it had a Mr. Gasket fuel pump, which I swapped out immediately. Also it had clogged fuel filters which were replaced with Wix fuel Filters. Also, I used 3/8 inch fuel line as replacement hose. Are you saying the 3/8 line is too small of a diameter?

What size Dominator?

#8 or #10 hose will work good for your application. Depending on how many valves, reducers, fittings you have on your lines, it will restrict flow. I had 3/8" fittings with plenty of fittings and it restricted it a lot.

Not to be a dick, but do you know you have a 540? Other than what the previous owner told you. Any motor builder would know that a 750 is obviously the wrong carb for a 540.

I would definately change the fuel lines and filter. Earlier in the year, I changed my carb and lines. It made a huge difference.

I was also in need of some too, Would it be better/cheaper to have my bassett headers re chromed insted of buying new ones?   ???

I paid $420 to do my bassett twisties. New headers are $950 plus. Its cheaper to buy new valve covers too.

Danny, glad to see you guys made it home safe. It was a bummer for the park ranger to stay in one spot. i tried calling the other patrol guys, but I did not see them on the water and I didn't have signal on my cell till fishers landing. it was good seeing you guys again, and remember you guys are welcome to stay at my house anytime. next boating season starts in march.  ;D ;D

Work for the county, its not too bad on this side of the woods. I'll being going state next year, but I probably won't be affected. The governator doesn't care much for the CO's and it shows. Getting paid good money to babysit prisoners isn't his ideal of saving the state money I suppose.  O0

What was the Patrol like last year for the Yuma Power Tour weekend?

They didn't have much of a presence last year during the power tour. ICSO and YCSO are usually pretty cool and the ones who complain and the ones getting in trouble for doing stupid things.

I asked them about running dry headers, and they didn't worry about that much or running without baffles.
But, for not having a flame arrester, they will cite you for.

Make sure your fire extinguishers are full and have all the required safety equipment. I saw a guy pay over $200 for not having a throwable device. Most infractions are hefty fines on the water. I pulled my f.e. out the other day and it was empty.  :-\

id say 3 miles up river its a short drive. if you run south just be cool cause the imperial county popos look for any reason to pull you over i have an inspection card from them that i keep since they pull me over most of the time.i will call you on friday afternoon or morning if you want to hook up and check out more of the river than the power tour

those imperial county guys pull anyone over! btw, they dont need probably cause to stop you. it falls under the H&N code, because it is a federal waterway.  :D
