You guys are killing me!  We wont make it this year but our hearts will be there.    RPMSleek, you will have a fantastic time.   Best venue for some boat racing.   What a fantastic event.

I used 5% styrene for a thinner.   For the first two coats (one light and one heavy) I ran 35% OrcaAirDry as a additive and then for the final, I blew it on with 50% OrcaAirDry.  This eliminated the need for PVA or Wax.  Worked really nice and easy.  My only issue was that I kept getting too close and had a hard time staying back the 12" to 18" that I was instructed to and caused myself some extra work.

I gotta agree with everyone about the Carbon Fiber.   It would really be a waste and unnecessary for your needs.   However, you absolutely can cap it yourself at home.   Just take your time and ask alot of questions.   Good luck...john

We're in the process of making some 3 piece plates for mine.  I don't like peeling the plates off the fiberglass just to mess with the pump so one is going to remain attached to the hull and the 2 small side pieces will be fasten to the main piece after I've drilled and tapped it.  Undo the two small plates and slide the pump out.

Some safety criticism.  Please don't take any offense, that is not the intent.

The throttle pedal should be mounted at a 75/25 ratio to the fulcrum point. If you have a throttle issue, cable stuck, broken return spring, bent linkage, whatever, you don't have a way to pull the throttle back, with a 75/25, with 25% of the throttle pedal being below the hinge point, you can "heel" the throttle back. In this case, i would recommend some sort of toe clip, this way you would be able to pull the pedal back with your toe...

Thanks very much.  It's been a fun project and the first stringer replace job my son and I have ever attempted.   Lots of fun while frustrating at time.

Here's one more shot we took last night.  The lighting was awful but we wanted to see what the back was going to look like.   This is pretty much what we had visioned but it's always nice to see it in real life

Got a sweet seat setup from a friend that has a 21 as he was going for light weight buckets.





Next up was to set the motor one last time to make sure we have the motor at the right height before breaking it down for powder coating.



And last night there was a break in the weather and we pushed it outside for a quick picture

Thought I would post up some progress on Proppys old boat.







After wasting a ton of time treating this boat like a car and preparing it that way, I learned that with Gelcoat, you dont do any of that.  Soooo, all the time spent smoothing, sealing and priming the transom, I ground that all back off  :banghead:

I then attempted to forget what little I ever knew about spraying and shot some Gel.   Wow, I made my fair share of mistakes and was really unhappy with the appearance the next day but after blocking that down with some 400 grit, it looks fantastic.   Gelcoat is very cool stuff....just WAY different that spraying base coat/clear coat.

Hah!   My brother in law and I put this little thing together back when it was new in 87.  He used it sparingly for a couple years and then it's been sitting every since.   With all you guys having all the fun with mini's I thought I would see if he would sell it.   The response was yes and for an extra 100 bucks I could have the little outboard.

Went and picked it up with Ian and other than being really dirty, it's a cherry.   Even the shift, throttle and steering cable were free and moved easy. Has a little non skid tape on the deck in the shape of a racing stripe but we think we'll take that out and lay a strip of carbon fiber down the center to give it a little more modern look.

It just has a 9.9 Evinrude at the moment but it's such a cherry motor I probably just run it as is.     

The boat is a double hull all fiberglass hull that from what we were told, they used to rent out at Disney World.   The regular ones had had upholstrey pads to sit on and the rentals were like this with the all fiberglass and had the hatch to hide the fuel tank. 



Got it cleaned up and both the grandkids and our 2 dogs seemed to have approved



Well, it has a capacity of 280 and needless to say, I damn near do that on my own but back in the day we had about 450 and other than the water about an inch away from the opening in the gunnel, it was no problem



So, as much as I wish this was a jet, I can't see me cutting this sweet little boat up so it'll probably stay a whacker

Anyhow, thanks and can't wait to see all the pictures as everyone gets these back on the water where they belong

Take back that hardener...there is no reason you need it to kick fast.....

Damn Brad, further proof I need to move.   I have some slow hardener and it's damn near useless up here in the Artic.    Send some sun my direction bud. 

Yep....  1 pump to 1 pump is correct but as Kat was suggesting limit the size of the batch to 5 or 6.  Much more than that and you might end up wasting it as it starts to cook off im the bucket.  Ian and I wasted some 207 a month ago and I knew better but did a big batch anyhow.   Stupid :banghead:

Hah, no Ralph, that it isnt.  But it sure is nice stuff to work with.   Like mentioned previously, limit the amount you mix at a time to about 5 pumps and refill when that is gone.   Anymore than that and it will set off quicker.  With 5 or less, you have a nice long working time that lets you fine tune your fabric so it lays exactly how you like it.

At the risk of jumping in too late, matt is not necessary with epoxy and most companies dont suggest matt with their products.   Ive never heard if its bad to use other than soaking up epoxy like a sponge by I do know they dont recommend it......john

After Ian got the pump from Glenn (thanks again), he spent alot of time touching up the black where it had gotten chipped.   Lightly scuffed the whole assembly and then buried it in some SPI Clear I had left over from the Brendella project to preserve the paint and most of all, the original pinstriping.

Turned out really good.....

After much anticipation.... the original GTH Racing pump out of the UFOII has made it home! Many huge thank yous go out the Glenn Thorne and his friend Gordy who graciously delivered it to me all the way up north in washington. Excited is an understatement!

Okay, we have learned so much of this boat that we now know the entire history start to finish so I'll post this again after having it been edited by the former owner and folks off the build team.   Ian and I have been so fortunate to get to know these guys and are now happy to call them friends as they are huge gearheads.

Here we go......

The UFO II is a 1977 Sanger boat owned by my son Ian Rork. A friend of ours in Central California Glenn Thorne went to look at this boat in 1996. The boat was in a warehouse and completely unrigged. The aluminum was still in boxes from having been freshly anodized. The paint, upholstrey and trailer were breathtaking.
The guys that were selling it wanted $7500 minus motor so Glenn passed on it but kept his eye on it.

Now fast forward to 10 years later when it came up for sale again and Glenn went to look at it. Unfortunately, by that time it had been pushed ouside and the California sun had done damage to the incredible paint and upholstrey.
At this time, Glenn was finally able to buy the boat and he brought it home where he documented what he had and put it in storage.

In 2008, another close friend Tom Manier of Jetboatperformance bought the boat from Glenn and originally started this thread. They assembled all the anodized rail kit, and finished the cavatation hardware. They put a supercharged big block Chevy in it and tried a variety of setups before electing to focus on other projects and put the Sanger up for sale where Ian bought it sight unseen.

In March of 2009, Ian and I had a great father/son trip to southern California to pick up my new blower motor I was having assembled by Barry Obler of Obnoxious Racing Engines. On the way back, we swung by Tom at JBP and we brought the UFO II home to Washington State.

While Ian was buffing and detailing the boat we found so many details that are not typical like the murals, pinstriping on the deck, on the floor, the trailer, and even inside the pump and faintly we could see the remanants of pinstriping on the dash that said,
"Prepared by Sano Don La Franci"
We knew this boat was different and I tried to find some history through all the boat forums I could think of but not luck.
The whole time in the back of my mind I kept thinking about when I was young, my wife Janice Rork and I would go to the car shows and every once in a while there would be some boats mixed in with the hotrods and motorcyles. Given this, I tried the custom car forums but no luck.

Unfortunately, Ian like so many was hit by the economy soon after buying the boat and was laid off. The timing was tough as our big Labor Day Mardon event sponsored by Tony Skagen of Skagen Boats was coming up quickly.
Sooooo, against my better judgement, I turned Ian loose in my shop and spare parts. He was able to assemble a Big Block Chevy and all the fixings to get the boat running.
It's important to mention the help of so many friends like Tony Skagen, Tom Manier, Travis Wester, Rick Gitchel, Austin Cole who also kicked in some spare parts to get him on the water.
We made the event and the boat performed flawlessly and it was great to see him with his own boat.
Upon returning, Ian was accepted to Central Washington University to make something of himself instead of ending up like me.

Now, fast forward to over the 2010 Christmas Holiday break when Ian was home and decided to play a prank on my by installing my blower motor in his boat while I was away at work. When I got home I was totally blown away how "right" the boat looked with that motor like it was almost meant to be....
Following that, I returned to searching trying to find anything I could about this boat.
I had Googled it, Bing'd it, tried Harlin Orin, Art Anderson, Billy B and Jerry Griffin and came up empty.
The only lead we had was that "Prepared by Sano Don La Franchi"
A few more months passed before I thought of something that I never had tried before. I tried Facebook.....
What are the odds that a Sano Don would be on Facebook?

Well, I did find a Don LaFranchi and he was in the right area (San Francisco) so I took a chance and sent him a message asking if he or anyone else he might know have any knowledge of a boat that my son bought with his name on the dash.

I got a message back from him the next day say merely "if this is about the UFO II, call me at ***********"

I was blown away that after all this time I had finally found somebody that might know about the UFO II. Well, we played phonetag for a few days till one night as I was driving in the driveway I got a call on my cell.
On the line was not only Don LaFranchi but the orignial owner, Rich Laguilo!
I knew I was in heaven when the first thing Rich asked me is "do you know how famous that boat is?"

So, here's a brief rundown of what all he told me.

The boat was bought by Rich Laguilo as a bare hull from Sanger in 1977 thru Precision Speed & Marine in LA.
At that time Rich was a crew member of the Proctor Brothers Pro Stock Race Team. They were sponsored by Precision Speed & Marine, who built the blown big block for Rich.

By that time, Jack Davidson (founder of Sanger Boats) had stopped selling bare hulls to the public but had one left and would sell it thru Precision Speed to Rich. The hull had originally been ordered for a racer in the Oklahoma area but never picked up. The color was black with gold and orange stripes in the typical Sanger fashion. The hull came from Sanger with Full Stringers, a feature designed for race boats only at that time.

Bruce Halloway and Dave Bostrom, were partners in GTH Marine/GT Boats. Before they became partners, Bruce Holloway worked for Berkley Pumps and designed & manufactured all of the high performance parts for the Berkeley jets.
The UFO II was one of the first boats to test the new state of the art performance race parts installed by Bruce Holloway of GTH Marine. At that time Rich also had GTH install a Balsa cored floor.

The race parts used in the pump was a Aq shaft, stainless A impeller with a fueler cut, custom shoe and loader, double drilled bowl, long droop and race nozzle with inserts. Clearly, these were the very best of the best for the late 70's and still good stuff today. Both Bruce Halloway, Dave Bostrom and GTH have alot of history themselves in the performance boat scene.

The motor was a supercharged 468 chevy with twin dominators running 22% over.
The boat also was equiped with a Lenco multi disc cluch with air shifter to activate it (remember, this was the late 70s. State of the art stuff at the time)

Mike Farley did the paint including the pinstriping, numbering and murals. I'll be honest that at the time the name didnt ring a bell but I've since learned that Mike has painted many boats, race cars and customs and is published in a number of books. I found that he's still in business and I hope to catcha up with him sometime.

The trailer was custom built by Chuck Larkin and is completely smoothed with braided wiring, pinstiping and many custom features. The attention to detail on this trailer is incredible.

All the custom machine work, rail kits, tiller for the Calgo steering as well as the aluminum seat frames were all build by Don La Franchi. Don's a master craftsman in the Bay area and his attention to detail has earned the name Sano Don.

The boat competed in the 1979/1980 season of the ISCA circuit ultimately winning the national championship both Custom Boat as well as Competition Boat. It also won Best Interior, Best Paint and Best Competition Engine, Best Custom Engine as well as Outstanding Display.
At the time, it was so dominate that the judges began to break out the categories as many protested it. Rich still has many of the plaques and trophies and it was fun listening to him read them off on the phone.
At the time it was the champion, it was the very first jet boat to have ever won the championship.

Finally, it was time to retire the UFO II and move on to a new project, the UFO the Third! This was a Fresno Mini Cruiser with a High Performance V-Drive. This boat was also powered by a big block Chevy with three Corvette 2 bbls and a Turbo 400 transmission. I have posted a picture of that boat elsewhere on the thread and at the time I thought it was the UFO 1 but in fact it is UFO III.   The Silver boat pictured below with the UFO II is the original UFO.

The boat was taken to Folsom Lake in Roseville, California and in front of a large group, the boat was christened with a bottle of champagne and launched into the water for the first time to show a) it would float, b) it would run and c)to formally retire it from competition.

He sparingly used it for a a year or two before selling the hull to a friend for $7,000 in around 1983.

The boat disappeared after that and it's location from 1983 to 1996 when Glenn found it was unknown. What actually happened likely happens more often that not. The boat was put in storage at Topside Marine in San Jose and it stayed semi abandoned tucked away from the weather until it was pushed outside in the early 90s. Soon TopSide Marine placed a lien on the boat for past due storage fees and eventually sold the boat to Glenn in 2008 through Pat's Lien service.

So that's it. The whole story of the UFO II. Through this silly boat, my son and I have made so many new friends like Don La Franchi, Chuck Larkin and Rich Laguilo and we both consider ourselves very fortunate.
