Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: 403 olds is just slow?

Good to hear, do you have any suspicions as where the water is leaking from?  What did you take apart over winter?

Let me know if you have any engine questions, i have an old mondellos book that might have some useful info for you

Sooooo, hopefully this concept works.  Looking for a single thread where all things big jet boats can be discussed.  Who makes/made large jet boats?  What would you do for a jet pump specifically designed for a large boat (over 3500 lbs? ) Large jet boats speeds, weights  etc. for a buyers guide.  What is the biggest boat successfully running a jet?

I will start.  My 21XTSKI Lavey craft is 22' 8" LOA with swim step and is supposed to weigh 3400 lbs.  I will be getting a weight as operated soon.  Holds 50 gallons of fuel.

What did the old Spectra Cruisers weigh?  werent they 23'?

I know Hallett made a 210 in a Jet and the new Tahiti has a 22' and 24' option with a Jet. Eliminator has the 230 eagle in a Jet.  Anyone with hard data i will add in for each manufacturer.

- EDIT -

Size Leaders:

1.) Insert name - 23' daycruiser -

2.) 70's Eliminator 21' daycruiser - 4800 lbs? loaded -  A.T. AA impeller w/ ~500 HP,  turns  5000 rpm 57 mph loaded. 60 light load.

3.)

4.)

5.)

try finding your color paint in the 1200 degree paint instead of the 500 degree paint

highly doubt it has an AA impeller in it but doesn't matter anyways as the motor refresh netted no increased RPM.  You need to look at what stayed the same on the boat between the 2 engines.

Same distributor?  rev limiter?

Same fuel lines?  possible too liitle fuel flow to increase HP?

Same spark arrestor?  too small causing a restriction at the 250hp range?

Not enough air entering the engine compartment?  have you tried running with no cover?

Have you checked fuel pressure or vacuum at WOT?

Brother on law has an older commander 16' jet with stock 350 and A impeller and i think he turns 4300 or 4400 rpm which matched the 265HP rating.

Something is up, sorry for so many questions but hopefully you find it.....

Great first boat!!!

oh and also NO WAY that is stock 330hp.    530hp is more like it.  even better for you

Thats a bummer! but looked like a lot of fun none the less.

Fresh carb and fixed some wiring runs great now

great to hear.  didnt feel like chasing an old carb? haha

Nice start to a fun ride!

What are the intentions for the boat?  just looking for a little more speed?

i would do upgrades in this order.....

1.) Place diverter - Definitely

looking for a bit more money to spend?

2.) nice quality loader

still got a few hundred in your pocket?

3.)  HPH nozzle.

out of curiosity, what intake is on the olds? What oil pan? Also, i doubt the engine still has 10.25 compression if it has ever been apart and had head gaskets changed.

Good luck, keep us updated

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Marine Power 454 White smoke
« on: May 30, 2023, 09:55:37 AM »
White smoke out of the carb sounds like you have too much fuel pressure and are overflowing the bowls but some of the other symptoms seem like its not getting enough fuel.

What is the fuel pressure to the carb?

I have a marine power 454 with quadrajet and the thing starts and idles like fuel injection.

Hulls / Re: Honest mph

Just wondering what kind of mph is everyone else seeing with factory iron heads,N/A in a v bottom.

Factory as in stock?  or modified factory iron ok  too?

we ran 69 GPS with  a wide body 18' Tahiti with modified factory Olds heads and logs if that helps

62
Oh ok I will check and see if it?s doing that not 100% sure on how a carb works , Mechanical fuel pump about 6.5psi on fuel pressure gauge that we just installed , old carb from the part numbers I looked up it?s looks to be a really old Holley not sure on the condition of it but it does look a little dirty by the air bleeds maybe rebuild time ?

Do you have the part # handy for the carb?  You said its really old but i didnt think older carbs have sight glasses in the bowls, just inspection screws.....

did you just put this carb on the boat or is this a "new to you" boat?

63
Okay I?ll do the bowl level , what would happen if it?s to full? It?s not coming out of the overflow tubes at all , and on the idle mixture screws one side seems to not do anything all the way in or back it out a few turns idle doesnt change at all,  1 screw each side for idle/air adjustment

if it is too full it will flow out of the boosters long before it will flow out of the vents as they are much lower.  typically the secondaries will spill before the primaries.  with the air filter off you will be able to see them leaking/spilling.  even on the trailer you could probably see it if someone wiggles the boat/trailer.

that is a problem with the idle screws.  the two that arent working should be inspected.

New carb? old carb?

Mechanical or electric fuel pump?  What is the fuel pressure?

Im no expert but i would say there were quite a few.  Are you talking mid 90s early 2000's year range?

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Testing secondaries

No he means to place the zip tie around the rod that goes from the carb to the diaphragm. Slid the tie up to the bottom of the housing.  I have used a little paper clip as well, then after your full throttle run you can look back and see how far it was pushed down the shaft.  This will tell you how far the secondary's are opening while the motor is running.

Also, i read the instructions for that unit --

https://www.holley.com/products/fuel_systems/carburetor_components/choke_and_vacuum_secondary_components/vacuum_secondary_parts/parts/63-1QFT --

it says it still has a "purple" rate spring in it and the screw only operates how fast it can open.

Have you ever had it open to verify that the spring hasnt been swapped out?

i have never seen the "quick set" setup. i will have to look more into it.  Im used to spring changes.

was testing my brothers commander with a holley 750 vacuum sec carb.  we did have the engine cover off but was pretty fun to just reach back and grab the secondary's open by hand.  you will definitely know when they come in (hang on! ) haha

you wont get enough load on the trailer to work the secondary's. sorry.

WHats scrap worth??  Ill take the stuff if your going to scrap it.   Seriously though.  ill take it before you scrap it.  We can discuss prices.

Impellers are usually cut so that they bite less water and thereby run at a higher RPM for a given HP rating to match the RPM power curve of engine.  If the pump has a bronze B impeller then it was most likely set up for a different motor then what is in it now (my opinion) that is making way more power.

I decent built 454 should turn an "A" impeller 4800-5100 rpm all day long.

Example off of the impeller chart, 4800 rpm with an A impeller is 350hp, the same HP with a B impeller is 5100 rpm.

It is possible they set the rev limiter to limit the top speed of the Boat.

Very generic answer is YES,  most likely the rev limiter should be raised.  Long answer.... only you will know your driving ability and whether or not the limiter should be raised.

Glad you figured it out.  Yes that gasket is pressurized and i would wipe just the slightest amount of silicon on it upon instalation.  the pressure bypass should keep the gasket safe though.

BUMMER!

ive milkshaked a few times on the 455, most common area was the timing cover where the water enters the block.  second most common seemed to be the water crossovers from the intake to the heads.

74
Any progress?   400 hp should be doable by getting the right cam in there.  We really need to know the head castings, as some are extremely poor on the exhaust side.  A cam in the 220/228 duration should get you close.

Good work! looks like your making good progress.  With an alum head, header and cammed 455 if your still only turning 4700 RPM you might already have an AA impeller in there.  Keep digging and let us know your updates.
