Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: BBF head I.D.
« on: June 06, 2016, 05:35:49 PM »
Ford seems to have so many different heads, I never know which is what.   I guess I will keep looking.  This has already been a 3 year engine build that I expect will go on for another 3 or 4.    Hell I gotta find a boat to put it in too.

I have a set of Ford DZVE AA heads.  Opinions on how well these will work for a build looking around a 500 hp 460 is what I am looking for.  How about if I decided to go big and build a 600+ stroker motor?    How well do they respond to light porting?  Looking for a bottom end monster tug boat, not a race boat.

Opinions are like butts, everyone has one.   But to paint with a broad brush, all Olds heads flow poorly if you are looking for high performance.  They were never (well almost never) engineered to make big rpm or hp numbers.  They were made to move Grandpa and his 4000 lb. couch down the road with no drama.  Yes you can port them but it is lipstick on a pig.

The exception is the "C" head.  This is the one that often came on the 442 Cutlass.  It is really the only factory head that works well, and the drag race and resto car guys will pay enough for a good set to buy you some Ebrocks.  However if you get serious about buying aluminum heads for an Olds, there are better choices than Edelbrock for sure.  But they cost.

Unless you are spending a ton of money on hopping up your Olds, don't spend too much time worrying about which factory iron head to use.  I have usually been told to avoid "J" for low compression/smog design.   But if you can save your "C" or find another, they are the way to go.   Again, these opinions are worth exactly what you paid for them LOL

The C heads are the only heads worth any money, save them if you can.  All the other versions are pretty comparable in their lack of performance.   Good luck getting it back together.   There are many other mods to the oiling system, they are on here somewhere but you will have to search a bit.  Scooping some of the crank oiling holes comes to mind, and not using a high pressure pump.

I have been flirting with buying a new boat and all I see is open bows.  Everywhere I look there are nothing but open bows if you are looking for over 19 feet.   And that ain't what ol' Glasscutter wants.  Don't need that much seating and I hate the wind buffeting.   Good luck in your search.  Don't be impulsive, there are always a ton of boats available.  Just keep looking until you find the right one.

You can never have to many spare plugs, for that one time (or more for some of us) stashed in boat and truck.  They sink real fast when loaded down and plug out.  I carry jumper cables and tow ropes.  2 spare tires that you KNOW are on correct rims is not a bad idea either.  Trailer tires age and fail with alarming quickness.

I am looking for a place to clean some motorcycle hubs in preparation for painting.  They are cast magnesium.  I also have some bare rims that I need polished.  Anyone have any leads anywhere in the I.E. that won't tear stuff up?

I got Motor Fever around age 11.  Started with street bikes stripped down for the dirt because nobody really made dirt bikes back then.  That carried over into muscle cars and jet boats.  After having owned over 20 big block Mopars of all kinds, I have kind of gotten over fast cars.  Fast boats have transitioned into slower boats with more room for the ladies to work on eliminating those pesky tan lines.

However, my love of all things Dirt Bike remains as strong as ever.  I'm racing a 37 year old Husqvarna at Glen Helen Sat. and in 29 Palms in the beginning of April.  At the end of April me and a buddy are going to Marysville for the CZ World Championships.  Over 2 dozen National and International champs will be joining us to celebrate all things CZ.  I am giddy like a school girl just thinking about it every time I go out into the garage.  Dirt bikes and boats just seem to have a way of becoming a lifestyle.   Braaaaap!

It says $4500 OBO in the title.   But he isn't trying very hard.   >:D

Sitting here on my third Jack and Pepsi waiting for my Asiago Chipotle potatos and my BBQ'd prime rib to finish.    A long hot tub session is going to follow and then tomorrow me and the kids will be leaving with dirt bikes for Red Mountain.

But drinking got me thinking about that IE meet up that was talked about a while back.  I would like to see that happen for sure.
If any of you guys are into offroad motorcycle racing the D37 Grand Prix series will be coming to Glen Helen the first of March and then 29 Palms first of April.  I will be 55 in March and so I run with the old guys, but it is fun as hell.  C'mon out and join the party.

Boating content to follow:   I really need to get on the water this year.  Really  really

My sister and her husband got married at the Lake Havasu Yacht Club and they don't even boat.  They have been married for 16 years though.  Best wishes and congratulations going out to Anne and Dave (whoever they may be).

I think that it is well worth noting, that this is the most drama SCJB has had since Rod and the great dildo caper of 2009.   I spend way too much time on several recreational websites, and this one by far has the best people.  Every time someone needs help of advice, or just wants to vent, the outpouring of knowledge and friendly advice is truly amazing.

Thank God we were able to ditch that Omar guy too   >:D

Not trying to be an ass, but we can see what colors it is.  How about what we can't see?  Like motor, hours, etc.

The best solution would be to not tow at 80 mph.  Duh.   For what your ticket is gonna cost you could fill your tank several times.
If you have a blow out you may be spending substantially more than that.  If the drive is 300 miles the difference between 60 mph average and 75 is one hour.  If the drive is 200 miles the difference is about 40 minutes.

Members of the Cult of Hodaka have taken things to amazing extremes.  In today's vintage 100/125cc racing they are nothing to be dismissed lightly.  Them fellas up in Oregon have way too much time and talent on their hands.

Have you considered a wrap?   I think most guys will guarantee it for 4 or 5 years.   Just a thought.

We're getting a new sewer line today.  Tore up 15 ft of perfectly godo patio and 30 feet run under the yard.  So naturally the snowball effect kicked in, and hell let's tear out all the old sad plants and go southwest xeroscape!  Oh brother :banghead:

We have had 5 floods caused by pinholes in the copper piping.  Most of the neighbors have had too.  The soil is terribly acidic.  Both my next door neighbor and I have Allstate and we have both (on or about the 3rd time) tried to get them to partially pay for a repipe, but they won't do it.  They are always great about paying for the damage even after all this and neither one of us has had a rate increase.  We do have plumbers on speed dial however.

That float is screaming out for some kind of cool motovation like a 455 Ponch or a big block Mopar.   Cheby?  Pfffft    :screwy:

Putting in the external drain lines you can make the holes bigger than you will ever need.

Not a real desirable bike to race, but it would make a great start for a quality stock restoration.   They didn't call them The Widowmaker for nothing.  A 125 like power and in a open class motor with short wheelbase is not really user friendly as they say.  That is clearly not a stock pipe, but maybe that is a good thing if it helps mellow the power hit.
If you are on Facebook,  try Mark's Vintage Swampmeet or Vintage Offroad Motorcycle Marketplace.  I saw one a while back go forabout $2000 but it was near perfect.  Good luck with the sale.

Not sure if it is funny or sad to see how this has changed from a memorial event to a big party with no real mention of the man.  I would bet that fully 50% of last year's attendees had no idea.
