Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Vacume Advance Removal
« on: August 31, 2011, 09:50:00 PM »
I have a BBC and I have ordered the vacume advance block off plate for 8 bucks and was wondering.... :sly:
Do I leave the timing where its at now? or do I need to play around with it...It is now at about 34 BTDC with the vacume advance on and when I unplug and blok off it is around 14 BTDC.  My guess would be to leave where its at and adjust the idle and test drive to fine tune.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Removing Vacume advance
« on: July 25, 2011, 11:09:19 PM »
I have seen a few boats without the vacume advance on HEI distributors and was wondering what the benifits are of that, what do you set the timing at and what do you have to do in the distributor for this to work.  Just wondering and it looks much better without it.    O0

Hulls / Adding HIN Number
« on: June 25, 2011, 08:45:11 AM »
I was givin a HIN number I have to put on my hull by the Arizona game and fish and they say it has to be on metel and secured to right/rear of transome. What are some good ways to do this and have a stamped plate made?  Could I use the punch style numbers and stamp it myself into the aluminum trim on rear of boat?  My boat is 1972 and I guess they did not do HIN numbers then.

Engines / Engine Parts For Sale / Cooling/Water line routing
« on: June 13, 2011, 10:32:31 PM »
I konw this has been asked hundreds of times on here but I cant seem to find any 2 opinions that mach.  I got my boat in pieces and trying to figure out how the water lines route from t-stat housing on intake to OT headers.  I have a t-stat housing on a BBC that has 2 outlets and one goes out the transom  and does  the other go to a t valve and to the headers? and on the line that goes out the transome do you need a gate valve or ball valve to restrict water flow slightly so the t vavle will work? and whats better, gate valve or ball valve? and I have also heard that this is bad and you should make both lines go out the transome and a port on the intake to gate valve and then t valve to headers.  The person that told me this said I will build too much waster pressure and get water in oil if I dont do it this now this has got me worried that I need to do it like that...what does the majority of everyone run?  I am sooo confused now....  :banghead:

Hulls / Left side or Right side drive
« on: June 05, 2011, 11:12:52 PM »
How come some boats you sit on the right side to drive like on all Sea Rays that we built at the Phoenix plant and my neighbors bayliner etc. and most jet boats are left side drive? My 16 year old son asked my this question and I did not notice but now I am wondering.   :sly:

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Holley Help!
« on: May 29, 2011, 12:38:11 PM »
I went to start the new motor saturday and it wont start. I have no experiance on Holly carbs. It is a 3310 and it squirts gas at the top when at full throttle but it wont start and bone dry insde intake.  float levels are perfect. Fuel pressure from electric fuel pump is 4psi and sometimes 3psi. Kinda low but it should still start and idle.  Squirt either in it and it fires right up.  Is this enough fuel pressure to start and idle at least or does anyone think it is the carb?  I just had it overhauled about 6 months ago and have not ran it til now.  Any suggestions please... I am stumpped...    :banghead:

The No Wake Zone / 98 Chevy Truck Rear Brake problem
« on: May 13, 2011, 09:08:05 PM »
Hello, I just bought a 98 chevy truck with 91k miles and everything is like new except rear brakes grab and lock up easy even after cleaning, adj, greasing sides of pads, etc. and nothing seems to work.  I adj. tighter and looser and stays the same. It has new looking shoes and springs look new and all that other stuff.  Does anyone have any suggestions on what might cause this or is this a problem with the older Chevy trucks, it is a 4x4 z71.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / 454 Build Stupid question
« on: April 30, 2011, 10:43:15 PM »
I have rebuilt a 454, bored 30 over and new cam and my question is, I am getting ready to stab back into boat and i was running the oul pump with a drill to pressureize oil system and to makwe sure I am getting oil everywhere.  I have the valve covers off and I am not getting any oil up through the push rods and onto the lifters.  Is this normal???? I am getting oil in the filter and to the oil pressure sending unit and up in the valley under the intake... I would like to know before I put in boat and start and destroy it?  I konw it is a stupid question but I have never done this part of a rebuild before.

« on: April 04, 2011, 02:07:54 PM »

WTF could it be? trash in the carb?  I am out if ideas and that is the oly other thing I think it could be.    :banghead:

What do yall recomend using to bring back that shine?

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Compression test on New engine
« on: September 25, 2010, 11:42:52 PM »
My father in law says I need to do a compression test on my new BBC before trying to start so I can konw if I have the piston rings in the right position.  I argued with him saying you cant do that on  a fresh motor and why?  Is this unheard of, I have never done it in the past or konw anyone who has done to a fresh enigne.  One other question, If you re-use head bolts to you put silicon on the head bolts? lock tight? or what? or should I just get a new set?

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / BBC Valve springs
« on: September 20, 2010, 11:30:41 AM »
I have double valve springs and the inner spring has more coils on one end than the other.  Some were installed with the more coils up and some were installed with the more coils down.  Does it matter?  I installed them all back with the more coils down so there would be less spring movement around the valve seals.  I can not find any inf on this on any web sight that deals with valve springs.  They were installed with the motor when I bought it so I dont konw what brand?

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Degree a Cam?
« on: September 05, 2010, 10:03:13 PM »
I am rebuilding the motor that was apart in my boat when I got it.  Its a 454 with a 286 isky cam and do I just align the timinmg marks on the timinmg chain and let it go or do I need to degree the cam?  I have only put together stock motors before and this is a new world for me.  I bored 30 over and new flat top pistons with new rings and bearings...Is there a break in running time and to set the rings and do I change the oil soon afterward?   ;D

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Stiff Pistons
« on: August 30, 2010, 02:35:42 PM »
I am rebuilding the 454 in my jet boat and its bored out 30 over and does not have too many hours on  the engine.  I noticed when I took the pistons out on 3 of them when you move the rod on the bushing in the piston it feels a little stiff.  Is this normal cause the others seem too move freely.  Anyone have any thoughts or experiance with this?
