So it sounds like Blythe is a great place to go for weekends, not such a good place to live....

i couldn't imagine living in blythe full time...or even quartzsite or any of those small towns. maybe if i was 90yrs old and had nothing to do all day. if you like the river and going to the dunes, i guess it would be a good fit but even that gets old after awhile. oh, and the river there SUCKS  ;D

That's the kind of info I was looking for! I did some internet searching on Blythe, I'm thinking they're gonna have to find someone else to transfer there

Here's a pic of Killer's boat on his favorite lake.

I'm going with Ralph on this one, I'm not a huge fan of pulling engines much less putting them back in! Don't let akakiller bother you guys, he's one of my best friends, he's the one that told me about this place, make him show y'all a picture of his boat, I'm a little jealous of it. That being said, I found a local reutable shop with a really nice guy for an owner, I've seen his personal boat so I know he can build stuff that runs like a raped ape, AND holds together for more than one or two seasons.

See you guys in Castaic on Sunday?

assuming that my block, crank, pistons etc are good can I get another set of rods, have the whole enchilada balanced
& use this all for a rebuild, or am I asking for trouble?
Thanks again guys for all your help, advice, comments, this place reminds me of hotrodding before it got mainstream

3786
Ralph, you being a Ford man, what would you recommend for a rebuild? I'm not looking for a top fuel engine, I'm actually more interested in reliability first, a little performance 2nd

3787
Ralph, you're right about the wallet part! Supposedly this engine had less than 1 hour on a fresh rebuild, yeah right, look at the pan contents

Looks like the piston skirt might have been the cause of it, or maybe it's just another victim

anybody handy at repairing Dooley oil pans?

because one hole just wasn't enough, here's the other side of the pan

and to top it all off, the errant rod is off the crank, and the engine is still siezed solid!

Oh well, now I have something to do this winter  ::)

I have a line on a good, low mileage 460 complete engine, is there anything special that needs to be done to stuff it in the boat?

Thanks

Thanks for the compliments and the welcomes.  Took 'er out to a local lake yesterday, things were fine all day, then as we're making our last laps the wife decides she wants to ski, no problem, get her up, she skis and she falls, this is where it gets fun, on my loop back to pick her up I had to nail it to make a tight turn, got to her and there was smoke/steam coming out of the engine compartment, had some water in there so I hit the bilge pump (figuring it was the slimy bilge water hitting the block/exh log) she's on board and we're making for the ramp, boat's running a little odd but not enough for me to get overconcerned, and then it happens, there is an awful noise from the engine compartment and the engine dies, smoke pouring out of the vents, the hole in the cover for the carb, not good. Got a tow in from a really nice guy in a ski boat, hit the ramp, out of the water, look at the dipstick, MILKSHAKE!!! I automatically assume blown head gasket(s) but after reading some stuff here and seeing Perf. Jet's pressure regulating valve and reading his theory on the whole thing, I'm hoping I can get by with head gaskets, oil change, water line re-plumb. Does this make any sense? I might just make it to Castaic on Sunday. Anyone want to trade a smaller boat for the eliminator?

Thanks again for all your guys' help, it's nice to know there's others out there with the same sickness I have...

I found one of the cable sets online, I'll be ordering one on Tuesday, I'd much rather spend $180 than crash my boat! Thank you guys for all the help, Castaic huh? sounds like it could be fun, what's the details? Here's a pic I just took of it in the garage (talk about a tight fit!) I'll take some more tomorrow and post 'em up.

I've taken the rack & pinion off the helm part and the wheel spins as free as a bird, is the r&p system what needs replaced or does that come with a new cable?

Hi, my name's Skip I'm up in the central valley (Bakersfield) just got a new (to me) boat today, it's been 10+ years since I had one and it was way past time I got one. Scored a '78 Eliminator 21' mini day cruiser, 460 Ford w/berkely took it on it's maiden voyage today, man did I miss that feeling! I like this site so far, I'm gonna have lots of questions for you guys. Here's one now, the berk in my boat has some crazy stiff steering, kinda like a power steering car with now fluid, and it sucks to steer it in the 5MPH near the ramp, anything I can do to free up the steering and make it steer better @ slow speeds?

Thanks!
