Hi All
i have been reading this site now for a few days and just joined. have a couple of questions. first of all does anyone know anything about this boat. second of all it is a project boat, there is no interior and no engine. the boat is 23' long and about 90" wide. it has a cuddy cabin that is about 7' long and about 40" inches tall. needless to say it needs some work. i will try and get some pics up soon. i`m looking for idea`s on where to start. the boat also slopes from front to back or back to front depending on how you look at it.lol. i was thinking about putting a full floor in. i was also thinking of raising the floor up with a grid style support to hold down weight. i want to raise it approx 6". then i was thinking of doing a wrap around seating from the right hand passenger side to the back bench and around to the left hand passenger side. any opinions or comments would be welcome. i plan to put a 460 bbf into it. also it has 2 fiberglass gas tanks on either side. i believe them to be about 30 gallons each. is there a way to know if they are still any good. they look good from the outside and i believe there is still some gas in them. not sure on that though.
any help would be greatly appreciated. i also may have to do some glass work on the hull. there is a small crack on the bottom of the hull and also a corresponding crack on the floor. not sure how much trouble this will be to correct. again will try and get some pics up soon. as i know you will need to see pics of the cracks.
don`t have a lot of money so will be doing most of the work ourselves. any spare parts that you would be willing to get rid of would be welcome. thanks for reading. jim

Sounds like you have your work cut out for you. Unless you want that specific jet boat you may want to start with a more beginner friendly project. Either way... [attachimg=#]

Hi HotRod
thanks for the welcome.
well i`m not the only one working on it. i bought it with a friend who has an 18' avenger. so i am not going into this completly blind. lol. but yeah this is the one we want. it is big enough to hold 6 or more people i believe. that is why we got it.
and yeah i know we have some work to do. that is why i posted this. after reading through this site i realized the wealth of knowledge on here. so i`m attempting to pick all those brains out there to maybe come up with something that we didn`t think of or knows more about.

You can't find a 23' jet boat on every corner so I can understand your point. IMO you should start out with the foundation of the boat - the hull. The slope from front to back would be my first priority. I'm guessing it's a hook where the middle of the boat's bottom is "higher" than the front and the back. What kind of shape are the stringers in? What about the transom? I read where you said you were thinking of putting a floor in it, I'm sure that when it was built it had a floor. The bottom not being flat could have something to do with it not having a floor. When you add a floor you need to make sure that the bottom of the boat is flat that way you're not strengthining the hull while it still has a hook. I think you'd be better off not raising the floor more than it was at stock heighth.
Pictures?

How about some pics of it
-
This thing does sound interesting. Anything you wanna share about it, we're receptive. At least I am....

Hi Guys
i`m hoping to get some pictures on here tomorrow. but not sure. it might not be until tuesday. the stringers seem to be ok. i haven`t really had much time to look it completely over yet.
i dont believe it is a hook. the floor seems to be level all the way through. not sure though. i will try and get some pics up soon.

http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/boa/624672726.html 24' Spectra, Nice looking boat!
ok this isn`t the boat itself but it is similiar. especially with the slope of the boat from front to back or back to front, whichever way you want to look, say it.
i am hoping to get pics up here tomorrow on the boat itself.

That's my boat you're talking about there buddy. Is this the boat on ebay? Green and white hull named High Times? I found that one while trying to Google the mfg. who seems to have closed their website since I looked last. Mine has a full floor in it, no windows, no windshield, metal fuel tanks. I don't think I can be much help as I'm not ready to tear out my interior yet but let me know what you need. I have only seen one other hull like this. I had a modern paint job with a checkered flag theme and a bad ass Pontiac motor in it. It left me like a 18 ft tunnel hull woulda.
-
ok guys.
i have pics of the boat but can`t figure out how to put on here. i know there is a link to show you how to put them on. anyone know what it is. as soon as i can i will post them. thnx
-
ok guys found out how to put the pics on here. hopefully they will turn out. so here it goes.
-
ok the first pic is the crack in the floor. and the third pic is the corresponding crack in the hull.
-
heres some more pics.
-
and more pics
-
and more pics
-
again more pics. aren`t y`all sorry you asked for pics. lol
-
That thing is H U GE , not the boat - the crack. Seriously they're both pretty big. I would go after the crack first.
-
ok ok. the last ones. let me know what you think. thnx jim
-
I can't believe that large of a boat is on a single axle trailer. :-\
-
same thing i was thinkin
-
yeah i know. we are looking at adding an extra axle to the trailer. it was on a double axle trailer but the guy switched it out for his other boat. and this one went with the boat. had a relative who had to add an axle and it wasn`t that much so going to look into that.
-
have to agree with rod, i would look into the cracks before anything, might be more than you want to tackle, so why put money into the trailer. just my .02
-
Having that much hull hang off the back of the trailer isnt good......
You ever heard of HOOK!

actually if you look close it doesn`t have the winch tower on it. the guy took the one that was on there and went to put the original one on and broke the bolts to put it back on. so we used a tie down strap to secure it until we got home with it. lucky it wasn`t far. about 2 miles to get it home.
-
well it will actually go forward about another two feet. also need to readjust the boards underneath to fit the boat properly. and yeah we are going to look into the cracks first.
-
After looking at that crack more I see where it was repaired previously and improperly. How long is that crack, it's in the shape of a T, right?
-
Holy crap that's gonna take a lot of work. Go luck on that project. For sure get a diff trailer before you go moving it much.
-
actually rod it isn`t a T. those are just stress cracks. the major crack is about 4 inches long.
-
Dont replace the trailer, replace the boat ;D
You got lots to do bro ;)

yeah i know. that is why i posted pics and was asking for responses. i can do most things myself. my family has been in construction most of our lives. so not much i can`t do as far as wood and such. myself i`m an electrician so wiring will be done by myself for sure. motor and pump will be done by my friend i bought it with. not looking at getting it in the water this yr more then likely. unless we fall into some cash.lol. but we want to make sure it is done right and looks good when done.
so any constructive responses would be welcome.
-
Just get to work..... Ralph and his pops made some pretty major repairs to his boat. He could probably shed some light on the fiberglass repair.
-
ok thnx Undone.
hopefully either Ralph or his dad will see this and respond.thnx
-
Welcome blackbeard, heres a link to Ralphs fiberglass repairs.

Welcome to the board. I have a 23' carlson jet. Needs work also. I dig the bigger jets cause you can take more people with ya,camp in it,and not get as wet in the cold spring water.Stay with it. It's a cool looking boat!
-
That's exactly what the doctor ordered. Thanks propless.
-
welcome to the site ;) i saw your pics and said to myself WOW he has his work cut out for him. i went back and looked at the link (thread) and most of the pics are gone,i will try to get them reloaded tonight for you.
propless did a repair similar to yours but the principal is the same. i cant see your pics at work, but, i think at this point if the floor is still in the boat. Take it out so you can see the rest of the boat.
just my .02

I've repaired the same crack in the bottom of a hull 4 :banghead: times. The 4th try worked. The crack had to be completely ground away with about an inch wide hole in it. Then I ground each side of the crack to a point. I left lots of fiberglass "fray's" after the grinding. I glassed the top and the bottom at the same time. With the first coat of glass I overlapped the crack by about 3 inches on all sides and as I layed each additional layer I overlapped the last layer 3 inches. Before any of it dried I kept laying layers of mat, then cloth, then mat, then cloth, then mat, etc... until it was overkill and way too thick. I waited 24 hours before I touched it again. Then I came back and ground the bottom of the repair smooth and level, I also layed one more layer of cloth on the inside of the hull for asethetic (sp?) reasons after grinding the inside smooth. On the bottom I used mar-glass (fiberglass fibers mixed in with bondo) to fill in what very few imperfections there were. You've got to keep in mind that the bottom of the hull see's more stress than any other part of the hull (except for maybe the stringers) and it has to be S T R O N G !
[attachimg=#]
I can tell you that laying glass on top of the crack will not work.
Laying glass on the top and mar-glass on the bottom will not work.
Laying glass on top of and underneath the crack will not work.
The crack has to be removed.
-
ok well thnx for the responses guys.
yeah we know we have some work to do. i believe the title to this forum is Projects. lol. anyways yeah was planning to look over the crack in the hull. the rest of the hull looks good other then some rubs and scratches from beaching and what not.
we were thinking of raising the floor about 6 inches up. and then make the seats about 12 inches after that. it would put the back seats a little higher then the side but can always make the even. looking at doing the seat framing ourselves and find the foam for cushion and upholestry for it and doing that ourselves.
if anyone can see anything that would be helpful and constructive it would be appreciated.
thanks to all for the views and comments.
i will try and keep it updated on any work we do. and like most everyone on this site have more time then money. lol.
-
One thing to look out for on the seats... If you're planning on doing a lighter color, be selective with your foam. 2 of my friends had their upholstery done then a couple months later the foam started yellowing the vinyl.
-
thnx Undone
not sure what color we will go with. have a lot to do before we even really think about that. but still nice to try and figure out what you want before hand. lol.
