Title: 1978 Kachina 21ft Berk Jet 454 BB with trailer
Post by: burn504 on April 09, 2009, 06:18:46 PM
So i bought this boat a few years ago. Hardly got much use out of it before the season ended and i noticed a soft spot in the floor and that the fiberglass gas tanks were leaking.

This is an awesome boat but i just dont have the time or funds to fix it like it should. Read on.. its not hat bad actually.

The basics:

Engine and pump were in great working condition and the engine has not sat with fuel in it. Fuel was drained when tanks were removed.

The fuel tanks, deck, foam, and interior have all been removed as it was being prepped to have new stringers and deck and all restored.

Transoms and engine bay stringers are good as they were redone by previous owner.

I will either sell the boat as-is or part it out. Let me know if there is any interest. It is located in San Diego

boat comes with trailer which is in good shape. I would love to keep this boat but i dont have time to do it myself any more and the shops all want too much.

I would say to be done right the hull needs some stress cracks fixed. Stringers are not rotted and we were going to glass new stringers next to the old ones for additional support. If i were doing it myself i would do those preform stringers. Install new deck and interior and be good to go.

My loss is seriously your gain.

Make an offer. I figure i can get a few grand for the motor and another grand for the pump and sell the trailer separate or with the hull.

Thanks for looking. I am a member of screamandfly and hotboat(formely).

i will add some pictures tonight or tomorrow.

I also have title in hand for trailer and hull is recently renewed registration.

ok these are obviously not the pictures of how it stands right now. Right now it is Hull, Engine, Pump, Steering wheel, gauges, hot foot pedal, engine hatch, no interior.

if there is any interest I will swing by the shop and take some pics of how it stands now. Basically take the seats out and the rotted wood that was underneath and thats how it is. I still have the seats for the buyer if they want to use them for layout/stencil.

Thanks

Decided to put the boat in storage for a while after I posted this.

It is in the shop getting new stringers, deck, and all stress cracks inside and out taken care of.

So this can be closed or you people in SoCal can give me a hand finding some custom fuel tanks that will fit and still hold 30+gallons

actually that was the guy I bought it from.....

I originally pulled it with my 2004 Dodge Ram Quad Cab HEMI and now pull it with my Range Rover. Does that pass your approval?

And actually the ridgeline has a 5000lb capacity along with being a Honda.

The range rover and the Dodge Ram both have extra oil coolers. Both are factory hitches. Dodge obviously pulled the boat easier than the Rover, but I have pulled the boat from TX to CA and CA back to TX(1300miles each way) with no issues.

I should post some pics of the restoring of this boat.

yea the ethanol in fuel can do a number on fiberglass tanks. Mine was a combo of that and just aged resin/glasswork
