Came across this last week on CL. I've heard of Anthony hulls but nothing good, bad or in between.
It' a 78 Anthony 18', 460 with what appears a single carb tunnel ram backed up to a Panther jet. Says it needs a steering cable and some upholstery work. Guy says he'll take $1700.
Lets hear/see some opinions ...7

Can't say I can help dude, but that box van has a hell of a vertical haha.
The panther has an American turbine conversation, my buddy did the conversion and wow, Night and day... he's also got a conservative 460
-
Must be talking about Steve?
Never even paid attention to the box truck. Makes the boat look worse. Looks like something from Sanford & Son
-
Looks like a lot of fun for 1700.00

he'd have to pay me $1700 to take another panther jet. run. run far away. :screwy:

I think Anthony is a splash of Eliminator. I guy from Hot Boat named Shaun had a yellow one running into the 90's .
I think they were pretty solid hulls.
Panther isn't known for performance, but if AT has a conversion… ???.
Most would advise against the single carb T-ram. Some say it's fine.
If the hull and motor are in good shape, I guess it just depends on what you plan to do with it and how much $$ you want to put into it.
What kind of plans did you have for it?
-
Not dead set on anythin in particular. Someday I'd like to build a hot rod boat since I've already got the family boat. I know that's nowhere near happening with a Panther pump

I am running a single carb on a tunnel ram it works good

Work better with two carbs. .. :o
Was that out loud? My bad.
The Anthony is a great hull. Should be a full stringer and fairly light hull.
For me, the deal breaker is the Panther.
If that had a Berkeley, it would be worth much more.
I would not spend the cash on the conversion myself, what I would do is install a setback Berkeley.
That would be one stout sonovabitch.
I would offer $1500 straight up and be prepared to walk away.
My dad always says "If you don't need it to survive, don't buy it, unless you can steal it". Pretty solid advice really.

That was kinda my thought. Wait another week or two and see what he says on the price. As said, if it had a Berk in it, I'd jump on it in a heartbeat. Although I may come home to find divorce papers on the counter.
Not like I really need it. I've got a good running boat now and it would be one more thing to move to the new house in a few weeks

He guy was asking $2500 originally. I thinks he's higher than a giraffe's ass

My friend had one in the mid 90s with a 468 chevy and a 671 blower with a jacuzzi wj. It ran real good and was a solid hull.

I agree with Glenn.
The pump conversion will cost more than what he is asking for the complete boat.
There are a lot of good deals out there. Many that are more worthy of a divorce.

If you plan on keeping it...sure. If you will have it for awhile then intend to sell...no. Your going to invest money on any boat an would pass on a panther. It will be alot easier to sell a berk, AT or dom pump boat.
-
A single carb tunnel ram will work fine!! Don't listen to anyone people that say it doesn't work! You just have to over carb. It so a couple cul. Don't run lean!! I have a older style LS6 single carb tunnel with a 1050 dom. Works bitchin!! The tunnel ram frost's up in the center!! Which means perfect air fuel mix!

Anything! Not anyone... Lol!

you will have to pull the motor up to change the steering cable with a panther pump.

I always try to advise friends looking at boats or toys like this to make an estimate. Try to do a thorough, un-emotional evaluation on what the boat is going to need just to make it acceptable to you. Does the trailer need tires, lights or bunks, does the boat need a battery, upholstery, cables, motor work, pump work, hull repair. Are the stringers "Iffy". And for this estimate you need to figure how much your time is worth to do the repairs. Not $65.00 an hour, but your time is worth something, a couple hundred bucks to maybe $500.00?
Normally a boat like this is going to need at least a few things I listed. It's pretty easy to drop another 2000.00 to 2500.00 quick. Just ask all the people on hear that only got 10 minutes to 3 hours on their boat before they were rebuilding engines. So, for round numbers, if you can add up the obvious needs and come up with $2000.00 in repairs plus the asking price of $1700.00 this is actually a $3700.00 boat.
Take a minute and shop $4000.00 boats and see what you can buy for 4G's.
For 4G's you'll probably get a much nicer boat that's water ready, or one that will be worth a lot more if you have to invest a few bucks.
I hope you get my point. This isn't a $1700.00 boat in reality it's a $4000.00 boat.

Good though, understand the reasoning. Only flaw I see is, using the numbers provided, a $4000 boat will also likely need several of things listed above. So now a $4000 boat with say $1400 in repairs is now a $5400 boat... And so on and so forth.
Nothing will ever be set up perfectly, everything will need repairs right after purchase.

I completely understand. Cheap isn't always good, and there's got to be a reason it hasn't sold yet for that price. i has the same reasoning when I bought my Bahner. My thought was "spens more now, less later". So far that's been the case, one virtually trouble free season so far.
The Panther jet scarede away the most. Have always had good luck with Berks, haven't had to buy any parts for one yet, thank god. But I know they're readily available. Panthers I know there is the AT upgrade, which come to find out is pricey. I don't have a problem doing the work, but by the time I get home from work, and not to mention working on rigs all day every day, i just don't feel like it. I guess I'm lazy now.

Well we're on the same page then. If I was itching to get on the water I might do it. Too much going on right kow between Christmas and packing to move.

Yeah, plus since you have a sweet float already, you should build a hotrod boat with everything you want

I agree MorePower. Imagine if you took the money it takes to build a "hot rod", put it into the Bahner. plus the money it takes to maintain 2 boats and trailers (registration, tires, oil, storage, repairs, etc…).
But that just one way of thinking, (the reasonable way ;D ).
