Title: FS: 1978 Spectra 20
Post by: GlassCutter on June 28, 2014, 05:32:29 PM
I can't believe I'm doing this but I have been drinking heavily for hours.  Money is tight and I'm tired of just seeing this boat sit unfinished.  so its kinda of a drunk thread but not. Anyways

A couple years ago on a lark I drove up to Fresno to buy this boat basically unseen.  It ran (Ford460/Berk) and the price was a steal.  He said the pump was new but something quit working on the last outing.  Crawling under it I find a 12 pack wrapper in the grate.  And a ton of stuff wrong with the trailer.  Crossing my fingers we get to So Cal with no trouble.  I'm a happy camper and only $1600 lighter!
Fast forward . . .  Two years ago I spent another $1400 having the trailer completely re-habbed including tires, brakes, bearings, etc.  The motor turned out to be junk but the interiror is good for a year or two.  Rub rail needs some love but not much.  It is brown, which is honestly the only reason I don't put it together.

Two grand for the boat, or $3K for the boat with most of the parts to build a bad ass 460.  So far I have had zero luck posting pics on this site so if it don''t take, Pm me and I can email you one or two.  they aren't great pics but I din't have much to work with today.  I can get more when I'm not quite so looped.   Original everything, dog house is there but side seats are dust.  Solid classic boat, I just don't have the time to work on them both.  Or the money.  Why the hell does it have to be brown?  Why?
Holy crap ~ I think I got this !  thet deservs another Jack n Pepsi dammit

^^^ That's funny stuff right there.   I have spent nearly $1000 per month for 6 months running on my cars that arent all that old.  I owe $9k to IRS and I dont work in July so I go from tomorrow until Aug.30. before I get paid again.

And there are even one or two guys on here who have owed me a few Benjamins for nearly a year.

Im drinking again today and this heap errr incredible opportunity is still here.  Operators are standing by drinking homebrew waiting for your call.

Kinda.   More than not.   Got any tips for getting grime out of the grippy stuff around the edges?  that is the bigger eyesore.

I really want a 19 but they seem hard to come by and the 20 would probably keep the old lady happier  I grew up on the small spectra jets and Campbell   v drives

I have both a car and a boat that would benefit from that motor.  Not gonna sell the motor without the boat.  Currently the shortblock is in Utah, but my buddy comes down monthly if I ever get this project started, he delivers often LOL

I'm interested in the boat and the engine  I'm just curious what a bad ass 460 is    in my eyes it would be 550 plus horse but that's me just curious.   On a Chevy guy but for the right price and power the ford will do

Verdict is I'm too broke, too busy, and too stupid for this boat not to have a big For Sale sign on it. :banghead:

I just wanted a boat that I could ski behind.  That is why I bought this one.  Now the cheapest plan seems to be to build a big Ford and put it in place of the Olds in the big boat.
You two guys are pretty smart fellas, I'm sure you can make this happen.  Hurry please because my project for next week is to remove the trees and concrete that it is sitting under/on.   Let's make this happen Cap'n !

Well it has been 5 months but the trees are gone and the driveway needs to come up.  Boat won't be sitting in the shade much anymore.  Anybody wanna trade a new cement driveway for a boat?  How about house painting?  I need that done on two houses also.  Might even be able to set you up with a running, near new 455.

Looking at the interior pics remember that those seats have been under a tarp for nearly 3 years.  Yeah they are a little dirty but original and very serviceable.  The dog house in the next pic does have rust stains but in real good shape, it just isn't bolted in the right place and the little jump seats in the back are completely shot.
Brand new wiring, axles, hubs, tires, and a rattle can paint job that looks great unless you are on the ground.  Shots of the bottom to show how cherry it is, and an extreme close up of the worst body/paint flaw.  Look for the same defect near the forward/reverse lever in the side shots in the other post for a better example of how big it really is.

New pics for some folks that had expressed interest lately.  Sorry it took so long.  I tried to show the warts and the beauty both.

Title: Re: FS: 1978 Spectra 20
Post by: GlassCutter on July 11, 2015, 02:12:14 PM

Now for some of the warts.   Dunno what happened in pic #1.   Something hit hard and caused a big fat wart right up top.  Pic #2 and #3 is a  fairly deep scratch was "filled" with what appears to be Bondo.  It is the ugliest thing on the boat but doesn't go down into the glass.  It is an easy fix to be sure as it is only in the white, not like #1.

Pic #4 and #5 are showing what 30 seconds with some rubbing compound and a towel got me.  Obviously the brown looks better, but I was trying to show what a difference it made in the woodgrained areas.  Camera still didn't really capture the dramatic difference.

Don't know what is going on with page 2 of this thread.  It still seems broken from last weekend, but here goes again.  Better pics of the good and the bad.  Somebody needs this boat bad, don't they?
