Title: Spectra 20
Post by: CenCalCruiser on December 28, 2009, 08:59:56 PM
I know where a spectra 20 (listed as a 21) is locally and was wondering what you guys think. It seems to be in good condition. 460 ford that was rebuilt 3 years ago..interior new 3 years ago as well. Engine runs great...but the guy says the pump wont pump (he states that his friend took it out and doesn't know what happened, the pump just wouldn't pump). He lives about an hour away and was wondering what you guys thought before I went up to look at it. The boats only $2100 obo!! He'll take $1800 for it. Whats your thoughts??

OK after reading it a couple times just might have air in the pump sounds funny but my boat will not move at all once it was fired up on the water I had to put a valve on the pump to let the air out.  :screwy:

I used to just double dip mine...really never had issues :-\

On a jet I saw last year, the water port for the engine feed line came from the top of the pump, prett strange setup, haven't seen it before or since.

I'm guessing broken impeller or debris in the pump..You should buy it if you have the resources...

Shit, a 5/8-3/4" rock stuck in the inpeller will do it, blu the shit out of your headers too, not that I know anything about that. I'd buy that thing right now if i didnt have to go get it.

that boat is worth every penny, even with a broken pump(which it probably isn't).

Planning on going to take a look at it and picking it up on Friday. Holiday schedule has been really hectic! I talked to the guy today and he said that one of his buddies looked under the boat and found a big ol' piece of cardboard sucked up in the jet. He says all the boat should need is a new battery.

OK this guy just called me about the boat.   If no body on here is gonna pull the trigger I want to go get this boat Mon. or Tues.   C'mon what's it gonna be?  I don't want to drive to  Fresno to find out it was sold.

Alright, tomorrow at 9am I go to the bank and then head to Fresno to pick this bitch up.   Not quite sure what I need a 3rd boat for as I only have room for one but the wife thought it was a good deal and who am I to argue with that kinda reasoning.   I want to thank both CenCalCruiser and Tio Pancho for helping me out (or offering to) with this.

This place is so cool.

Hey Glass
If you need anything when you get to Fresno, give me a call--I'm sitting here in Fresno with nothing to do. I mean plenty to do, but totally unmotivated today.

Thanks Pete I just may do that.   More eyes and all that stuff is always good.   Although I doubt I will drive all that way and not buy it.  What might be helpful is if I could leave it with you overnight and pick it up Tues. morning.   I will call you in a few hours.   Thanks again for the offer to help.

OK so Im here and it is what you would expect for 2K.  What I was surprised about was it seems to be a quarter stringer boat.   Is that common on this size boat?   430 hours on a working guage hardin marine 460 wiith a tiny Ebrock carb.   Fwd/rev/throttle all on one handle?
/really not sure about the 1/4 stringer thing.  Should I  be?

I'd be willing to bet that they only appear to be 1/4 stringer.  Follow them up from the transom, proabably 2X6 to the front of the engine, then down to 2X4 up to the bulkhead, either way, for 2K you really can't go wrong

are you sure it's actually a spectra?

I think the heads were D3VE A42?      Good or bad?    Ya pretty sure Marc , still has some original badging and pebble tec stuff on the deck.

Up to 1974 all Spectras (18, 20 & 24's) had 4 full stringers with center bulkhead and the deck had a foam core. They were layed up very heavy!
From 1975-1978 the jets (18, 19 & 20's) had motor boxes.
From 1979-1981 Spectra went back to full stringers on the jets & I/O's.
Spectra always had full stringers & center bulkhead in the v-drives (19, 20 & 24's).

Well everyone is home safe and sound.   Sight unseen I think my buddy has already come up with the definitive name:  "That 70's Boat"
Needs carpet, battery and bilge pump immediately.  But the trailer needs major love.   I'm jazzed to have it, but at this point I have no idea what I am gonna do with it.   I wonder if Ray ever feels like this?      Naaaaaawwwwww
