So today I pulled the bulkhead out and started grinding some more getting my 6 to 8 inches on either side of the stringers. I also called Bostick and talked to them about getting my 454 in for magnaflux and line bore. Also having the heads magnafluxed and a valve job. Hope to have it down there in the next couple of days. Also I have a question about the supports under the bow. Are those in all boats or is it just something for extra support that was put in after. Thanks guys.

The engine is off the stand and in the morning it will be loaded in the truck with the heads and all the other parts and taken down to Bostick. Can't wait to get this engine process moving forward. And still have the question I put up yesterday about the supports under the bow. Is that there for extra support or is that in all boats?

they are for extra support and so the deck doesn't sag from the weight.

yes! Also you may want to put something in there to keep the deck from sagging wile your doing the stringers.

do your stringers go all the way to those supports?
do you think you can lay in new stringers without removing supports? or are they in the way?

Where the original stringers went was up against those about 6 to 12 inches. Not exactly sure how far along them they go.

I just checked how far up they go and they go about 10" along the side of the bow supports. Is there a way to stop the stringer right before I get to them? Also where it meets the supports it crosses one of the ridges on the bottom of the boat. So there is going to be a gap between the stringer and the hull which I know you don't want. So that's why I asked the question above.

ok.

id say theres two ways to attack (maybe more). a...you can shape the bottom of the stringer to fit every nook and cranny. or....which is what id do, mix up some resin with milled fibers, cabosil maybe some chop strand(1/4 inch) and create like a thick putty. commonly referred to as peanut butter or poky(pu-key)
i would apply some putty where the stringer will go to fill any gaps from the strake. afterward create a filet or round out what ever poky squishes out. you want to create a contour or curve going from hull up the stringer. this will help the glass lay down better. hope you understand.

also, i havent seen stringers go up that far. id do some research...ask around....you may not need to go all the way up to the supports. just stop right before them....or right before it crosses the strake. im not sure how far forward those supports are in relation to the dash, maybe you do need to go that far.

The supports are about 3'-6" from the dash and it's only about 4 and a half to 5 feet from the nose of the boat.

hmmm.

unless someone here can say shortening the overall length by 10" wont make a difference.....(anyone?) i would mix up some poky, apply it over strake and lay stringer over it. this will create solid contact between stringer and hull. then glass over stringer. mixing poky-peanut butter, isnt hard. and very common in boating. theres videos of how to make it online.

if you dont have to remove deck supports....id leave them. less work for you.
just remember to support the hull before cutting new stringer material. this way the hull doesnt get distorted by bunks. get it??
