Been talking with Reid lately about the Nordic, what it needs, and how we can get it ready for some fun. So I figured it couldn't hurt to offer the kid a hand with this mission, he brought the boat up Friday and we hit it on Saturday morning. I'm gonna try and chronicle it here, it's a bitch trying to remember to take pics of everything so if there is a lag in pics, deal with it :P . Ok, here we go;
This is what we started with
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi8.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa36%2Fluckiestiff%2F1978%2520Nordic%2FDSC00012.jpg&hash=f6790b2e576638d3b28749ff49b3ca812ddc001f)
First thing I saw was the oil pan literally sitting ON the intake bolts :o (sorry for the fuzzy pic)
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi8.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa36%2Fluckiestiff%2F1978%2520Nordic%2FDSC00011.jpg&hash=52ce6d69560b0affad0f9b1e0d0c90e389d932fe)
Once we got the pan off there were 3 spots that were ready to rub through, a few more hours of running the boat could have been ugly, glad we got it when we did.
Got the engine out with no major snags or hassles
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi8.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa36%2Fluckiestiff%2F1978%2520Nordic%2FDSC00019.jpg&hash=107d3bf9a52d5dd0b93313c4836b2b515edd9e53)
With the engine out we could get a good look at the bilge, no major problems found, just needs to be tidied up.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi8.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa36%2Fluckiestiff%2F1978%2520Nordic%2FDSC00018.jpg&hash=621edafc03c05fbe5b8442da201186bf70c14530)
Got the pan off (I didn't know you could use that much sillycone on a pan gasket) it's a good thing we did as the pickup had a bunch of silicone worms stuck to it :o
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi8.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa36%2Fluckiestiff%2F1978%2520Nordic%2FDSC00020.jpg&hash=9eaeff6a053d590e7de4799b8c5b5aa73fd1f458)
Engine looks like it's never been apart, couldn't find any stampings or markings to indicate it had, 2 bolt block, everything looks good so we put the pan back on for now, tucked the engine in the garage and went to work on the transom adapter & bowl leak issues
This is after about an hour or so of some semi-serious effort, lemme tell you, silicone is damn strong stuff especially when it's used as generously as it was on this boat, the snake looking thing you see is a small portion of silicone that was on the T/A
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi8.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa36%2Fluckiestiff%2F1978%2520Nordic%2FDSC00029.jpg&hash=6d9f6d1ddadfc51ec31e7cf76596a37628b1a280)
With the T/A off, it was time for the bowl to come off, a couple of suggestions from the dead blow hammer and the bowl was on the ground
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi8.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa36%2Fluckiestiff%2F1978%2520Nordic%2FDSC00030.jpg&hash=6fb04daf47dd3d3a3fcbb88a669a554649c51f7c)
Unfortunately for Reid, this bowl has seen way better days
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi8.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa36%2Fluckiestiff%2F1978%2520Nordic%2FDSC00036.jpg&hash=46c929a8f7594658e833659235b3d243467371c9)
The impeller looked ok, well at least until we took the hand hole cover off and I got an inspection mirror out, nice big chunk of blade missing, about the size of a golf ball.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi8.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa36%2Fluckiestiff%2F1978%2520Nordic%2FDSC00033.jpg&hash=1ba3fb3fccd887aa72039a249036cf66f2c2cbd5)
We had to cut the nut off with my cut off tool, and my sawzall, broke one of my gear pullers trying to pull the impeller off, a quick call to Jim Brock @ Cyclone Speed & Marine and it was decided Reid would take the pump to Jim for a new impeller and wear ring. Once Jim saw the pump he broke the bad news to Reid, a complete rebuild was in order. Jim tried taking the impeller off with his fancy impeller tool, the hub on the back side broke under the pressure, he tried using his good ol' block of oak that he's had for 20 years, this impeller/shaft combo BROKE it. Other than the suction housing, Reid's getting a new pump.
More on this boat as it unfolds, Reid's supposed to be back up in 2 weeks so we can start putting it back together, he's hoping to make the Father's Day bash, we'll see...............

Love in it... Don't stop now :)

Brian, that pump was beat, I think it was one of those "Friday afternoon" jobs ;D I was talking to Jim earlier and he told me that the impeller is fused with the shaft! Crazy shit man, crazy :screwy:
-
yeah dude...its soaking in PB blaster right now...i doubt if it will be able to be pulled off...is there a way to pull the impy and the shaft out @ the same time together?

yep, i sure am...skip's the shit man...yeah smaller exhaust hose to adapt to the 3" hose that was on there! because the bell tips are 3" thats probably why...but ghetto-rigged nonetheless.

hey, it obviously worked, did not leak, and no one even knew about it...if it works, don't fix it.

Is that a american turbine suction housing?
Looks like some good progress!
I feel your pain on the stuck impeller, I had to cut my whole impeller off the shaft :banghead:
-
yes sir...it was an older dominator 12S...great housing, but pretty much unrebuildable...im just glad im finally gathering parts for this beast...lord knows how long its been up at skips...2 months now? LOL...
