Gas Tank Issues..
« on: May 24, 2010, 09:42:24 AM »
Ok, So I got most of the subfloor work done.. just need to drill the stringer holes out and glass some dowels in then shes done. My question is about the "proper" way to install the gas tanks. They were just glassed in before and of course seperated with the vibration. Should I just reglass them in and lay it on thick or what? Most of the install tabs are broken off. Heres a few pictures to show you what Im talking about.

Heres a picture of the new subfloor!

And heres a couple of the tanks.

I'm quite sure I would NOT be using those dude. Those look almost as bad as the old floor did!

I wouldn't trust 'em. Last thing you want is all your hard work to go up in flames, let alone you're only gonna have family and friends in the boat with you......... You can pick up some good S/S imcos or russels around for well under $300-$400, with mounts. If original is what you're after, I got a Street Rod shop here that can fab a set up, or near you, I'm sure CJ222 can.

Don't take a chance by putting in 2 15 gallon or so time bombs in the boat. Just my .02

I would change those tanks to aluminum and mount them in stronger. My set up is similar but my tanks are screwed to what I call a "Shelf" that was just 1/4 inch plywood, I built up the shelf by laminating 3 layers of plywood covered it all with West Marine Epoxy and fiberglass matt then cloth and then screwed in with bigger/longer screws I know it will hold for a lot of abuse because it broke loose from the 1/4 after a lot of abuse and this is way stronger..   Roy

I was hoping you guys wouldnt say that.. Even though I expected it in the back of my mind. Guess Ill start looking for some new tanks then. At this rate this poor boat will never hit the water!
