18' Bahner BBF tunnel ram dual Holley 750's
« on: October 31, 2014, 08:36:15 PM »
I'm new to jet boats but have gotten very excited about mine. However, after changing the oil pressure gauge twice I getting no oil pressure. The guy I bought it from is a hack. Can any of you fellas give me some advice?

What should I check first and any obvious causes? I'm not a gear head but I plan to be. Any and all information will help me get there. It has Mallory distributor and an accel coil. The guy I bought it from said the distributor got fried so he tried pilling it. He said when he did he thinks the oil pump driveshaft fell down into the oil pan. Is that even possible? Even I know there should be a retaining clip on the driveshaft.

This is a great forum and I really appreciate any suggestion and advice.

Yes dropping it is possible but , only if the engine builder did not put it in . Not that familiar with ford motors . However I do know that can happen. Your going to need to mark the distributor and pull it. Look down the hole and see if that shaft is there or gone!! That's where I'd start!

Concur it's possible. Had it happen and was fortunate to be able to extract it with a mechanics magnet. Easy check to see if that's the problem.

Don't trust that they lined up the distributed correctly either. You may have to start from scratch.

I don't believe it is possible for the oil pump drive shaft to fall out while the oil pump is installed.  Inspect the shaft to make sure that it is not twisted off or damaged preventing it from driving the pump and being driven by the distributor.  Same thing for the distributor.  If all is well, try priming the pump with a drill motor.  Do so with the valve covers removed.  You should feel a lot of resistance on the drill as oil is being pumped.  You should see oil flowing at the rockers/push rods.  If not, I fear that you might have a broken oil pump pick-up or pump housing.  If the first test is not successful, you could try removing the pressure gauge or the filter and priming to see if any oil is pumping at at all.  Just bump it with the drill motor as a lot of oil will come out.  If all tests are unsuccessful, im afraid you will have to pull the oil pan for further investigation.

Good luck,

Joe

Question, can it fall out if the shaft isn't broken and the pump is intact?

Respectfully,

Joe

He said the guy replaced the dizzy.  At that point when removing the old one if the keeper was not on when he pulled it it could have came up partially with it then fell in..he should have heard it when it fell though..
