Check out the adj. ride plate
Have you had much time to play with the adjustable ride plate? and if so... how well does it perform in your opinion?I bought the boat over a year ago and never put it in the water. The ride plate is interesting to say the least, somebody put a lot of time into it. I posted it on HB awhile back for some info but nobody reconized it or had seen anything like it. Weather it is very functional or not I dont know, but I'll probably set it back up just because it seems to be a one off deal. It was originally set up with a rack and pinion steering cable hook up to an electric motor.
Looks interesting... any brand name? Always like seeing inovations I never seen before ;D

Cut the front bulkhead open today and jackpot, found 35 bags of cocaine. Old rigger warn me about bags of styrofoam flotation being sealed up there, but I had know idea of the quanity or the mess. Little foam balls no bigger than 1/4 inch, millions of them. The bags are 31 years old and very brittle, every one of them broke.

It's difficult to take a picture showing off the polish isn't it.All the silver parts are powder chrome, not as nice as polished, but i'm tired of maintaining that stuff. I just want to wipe it off and walk away. The other parts are light orange sparkle, has a little gold flake in it. The boat will be off white base and tangelo with gold pearl trim.
That will look bad azz
Another circle racer perhaps???::)
The people I know seem to think the Roger's hulls were the best suited for high speed circle racing... So you're off to a good start based on that alone.First and foremost I'm restoring it with the 70's theme. Second I would love to go racing. Will see how things work out. ;D

i cant wait to see it.....i love boats that have been restored to their era...rather then have splashes of modern styles to them. The long term ideal outlook for the raspberry would be the same as you're doing.I've got a scoop like the Liberty's had, all new stewart warner gauges(no bezels), cal custom finned valve covers, and an almost new foam steering wheel. I'm sure I'll end up with a couple of modern touches like new style carpet but for the most part it will look like a cool old boat. I hope you have as much fun with the Raspberry as I am with this one, it's been like therapy for me when I get to work on it.
76bonne,I'd run that just to keep everything period correct, maybe we could talk to Roger about it . I'm running a tunnel ram with duel quads so it would be the streched verson. This only pic of the scoop that I have and it shows it in the background to the right of the wood pile.
Don't know what kind of scoops the Libertys ran but you need to scrounge up one like on this boat, a standard on all Rogers race boats back in the 70s and designed by Roger himself. I put my old one on my dads boat and it was on it when I sold the boat after he died. Sure wish I'd kept the scoop now. ::)
I should call the guy that bought it, he re-did the interior and sold the boat the boat, maybe he still has it?

Thanks old rigger. While my Advantage was being built, I would come up 2-3 times a week to take pics and on a few of those trips I would find myself over at fiberglass concepts. Your right Harry was into every that was fiberglass. I remember camper shells, van accessories and California Performance hulls.
Like this one, that I still have. I'm willing to loan it to a responsible party for copying purposes if there's interest. ??? I'd love to have a copy and an original. :-\Hey Rod, are you sure its not for sale. Old rigger, ordered my Advantage in Dec. 88, took delivery Feb. 89. Here's what it looks like now, after Salivador regelled it in 05. Ill have to dig up some pics of the original gel that Pringle shot.

Yes I am sure. I thought I paid either $150 or $250 for it, but my friend Marc said I paid $300 for it. Rumor control says that this scoop is the laughing stock of this website, apparently Roger Weiman has great eyes for boats but not carb scoops. ??? I dig it and apparently it's not going anywhere anytime soon. It must be worth it's weight in Gold to me, as that's about all I would trade it for.I would like to have one, just for the fact that it was original equipment on Roger's hulls. I wouldn't put it on anything else. I plan on making a polished aluminum one for the duel quad set up. My brother-in-law has a waterjet machine and a tig welder, with his help it shouldn't be to tough. Check out the scoop on the brochure.
Marc wants me to try and make a metal copy as I don't own a tig welder for aluminum. Personaly I don't think a metal carb scoop will sell, what do you folks think about a metal carb scoop, sellable?
Im guessing this is your brother bonneville? He is my boatless nephew. I'd trust him

WOW thanks, at least that make 1 of us that trust me!!!!!
I love the paint job! I would be a bit worried about that chain actually holding anything if it got loose somehow...That chain is for the brake system. I think i'm going with that vynal covered cable instead of chain. It kills me when someone wants to help and wraps the chain over the tongue >:D

I wouldn't let anyone hook my trailer up anyways . I couldnt confidently drive not knowing myself it was done correctly .
She's wired. Things still to do, waiting on new fenders/ aluminum or stainless steps/ bezels for tail lights/ fender pads/ and new brake lines.
Thanks John, the guy that painted it for me only charge me 250.00 for labor and 350.00 for paint. Its the best 600.00 paint job I've ever seen. He only had a couple hours of prep, I had it pretty well cleaned up for him. I originally saw that color on a hot rod he was painting, knew I would have to use it one day. Got a call today, the stainless fenders are ready to pick up, that will be one more thing off the list this week.
did you get the paint done locally?Yes, Escondido, his shop is in the same complex as mine.
What color orange is that?House of Colors Tangelo which has the gold pearl in it. He primed it in white, layed down a pink base, 2 1/2 quarts of tangelo and then clear.
That's a screaming good deal.I would have screwed up that much in paint alone and he had it done in one day.
looks good....i would leave it the way it is :screwy:I'm not sure of what to do. I even have an old brochure with that same paint scheme. All opinions welcome. Should I leave it or have them reshoot it?

Thanks for the art work Rod, that really helps. I was trying to clean it up and not dating it with the stripe, but it sure looks better with some color on the deck.
Sorry guys but I have to agree with old rigger on this one, I hate that stripe. If you need that arrow to point to the front of the boat, your to drunk to be driving it. :screwy:x2 that ;D
Looks like its almost done at the painters. 8)
i liked the stripe..... :-\
Are the CF#'s in the gel coat? If so that is bad ass!!!
the 2 oranges dont really go. at first its not that bad but the more you look at it the worse it gets. I think its easier to re shoot a trailer than re gel a boat. And the orange on the boat is the better color

As for the adjustable ride plate, it came with it so I thought I would put it back on. Seams to be a one off prototype, maybe someday, someone will recognize it and give me the story behind it.
Does it have make contact with the water? As I understand it the only thing that matters is that it is 16 sq. inches.
so whats new RonI did pick up some dry stacks today from Neil at SDPM. There old Hookers, but never used, just need a little cleaning. Friday my son and I drove to Bend Oregon ( 960 mi. and 16 hrs). Saturday installed a kitchen for my inlaws (12 hrs.), and sunday drove home. So no progress on the boat and even worse than that, couldn't go to the Parker races
Thanks 2sav, I've probably got 8 hours into what you see there. I was going to use the old loom but son started giving crap about doing it right and soldering instead of crimping. In the long run i'm sure this will be better and it will out last me.
Just finished wiring the dash. Hope its right, everything is soldered and shrink wraped.

If you don't know someone that has a similar setup, I would ask your machine shop for suggestions.
I would do a plug inspections after cam break-in, first 20-30 min on water and with any major carb adjustment.
i would put the fuse block in like under the seat just go ahead and wire it dirct buy a fuse block mount it under the seat and it looks really clean ask lucky stiff for a pic of his hallet under driver rear seat
Thanks GT, I'm going to be pissed if I screwed this up. I'll have to go buy another 100 zip ties.
whos prerunner is that in the pic yours I hope :)Thats my nephews Ranger. I think he spent like 7 grand on the front suspension and the full cage. Then he and my son decided, one friday night, to cut the bed apart and hang fiberglass fenders. I'm just grateful, their experimenting with his truck and not one of mine. Too rich for my blood, I've got boats to build.
Hey 76 in the forum in tech, in the jet pump section page 2 there is some plumbing diagrams. I dont know how to put the links here for ya :banghead: I need to learn how to do that. Anyone for some lessons ???Thanks Nordi
Hey Bonneville- your boat is coming along amazing- did you build your own rail kit or did you buy it?Rail kit seems to be original to the boat.
very nice clean work!!!! thats exactly what i wanna do this winter. I really like the rails!! looks super strong and bad ass.... keep up the pics!!Thanks,If by rails you mean stringers. There gel coated the same as the rest of the boat.
Rail kits are the aluminum angles and plates attached to the stringers. We use to make ours with an old band saw drill press and some scotch brite pads. now days pieces like these are available as a kit.
Plumbing is done for now, later when I can afford it, we'll change it over to braded lines. I just can't put that kind of coin out right now. Check out the old school manual fuel selector I got from vee-driven, it matches the water valve for the headers.clean job on the plumbing
What , only 10 pages to build a boat ??? What gives . :sly:

Sorry guys, I'm guilty as well.......... :-[
only Rod and 2sav use 30 pages!
Great job Ron, that is one beautiful boat. ;DThanks Keith, I've put alot of hours into it the last couple of months trying to get it in the water before the season ended. It was a day filled with mixed emotions. On one hand I was excited to get in the water and on the other very nervous about all the things that could go wrong. Overall it was a very good day.
i dont see that you used a light valve spring or pulled the inner spring out of the existing springs, hmm, im not a chevy guy but i got some micrometers you can use and am willing to come over to help or support the effort
Hi Ron,Thanks PJ, these Allen trailers originally came with upholsered steps. You either hate them or accept them, I dont think anyone loves them. Someday I wound like to have some custom cnc'd steps made up, but for now they are tuck and roll baby. As far as the cam goes I pulled the valve cover off the right side and found the rocker at the rear has a huge amount of play. Its an exhaust valve I think, which would explain all the blow by that was coming out of the breather.
New to SCJB. This is by far one of the nicest boats and best start-to-finish threads here. Did you determine that the cam had lost a lobe? Did you pull the inner spring(s) out during break in? Seems like I hear more and more about new cams going flat during break in or shortly thereafter...boats and cars alike.
Also your attention to detail is amazing. What inspired you to upholster the trailer steps?
thx
p-jet
Sorry, should have been more specific. It was the rocker end and we put in brand new Crane Gold's.Could have been adjusted too tight .
Could have been adjusted too tight .now thats too damn easy ;)

Hey Ron where did you see the oil coming out ??? in the lifter bore ???I put the lifter back in before I ran the drill on it. Oil came right thru the lifter. With out the lifter in place it looked like good amount of oil flow.
Weird, my post didn't stick, Is there some scarring on the shaft of the pushrod at the guide plate?, could be a severe alignment issue...Also, there are two different length pushrods in a BBC (just an FYI), it seems like the lifter or the pushrod have a restriction, sure a lot of rust...could it be a bad rocker (rusty)? The push rods seem to run thru the guide plates in that last inch or so that is apparently hardened. They used the old push rods, which surprised me. Especially after spending $300.00 on rockers. In the pics the one that looks like it is scared, in reality looks like sharpie marks, and the one with the rust you cant even feel it, its more like it etch. I stiill dont understand why they used the old push rods with everything else being new. Does this mean I need a 1 new rocker / push rod (which I'll buy a set) and 1 lifter.
That's a goofy failure.

The lifter has some dings around the cup but didnt get the snap ring and doesn't seem to affect the cup surface.
Thanks TnT, I guess these projects are really never done. As long as I keep that in mind, all's good.
Been watching your Miller project and thats turning out to be one of the nices Miller's out there.
I dont think were going to break 60 degrees this weekend.
:banghead: :banghead: :banghead: I'm not sure we're going to break 20 degrees this weekend with a foot of snow predicted AND gusts of winds in the 70mph range... Will you adopted a overweight 50 year old that drinks beer? :-\
Mounted a pump brace in on Sunday. Right now the brace is just wedged tight under the rail kit. I may just leave it like that for now.
Found water in the oil, looks like it sprung a leak at the intake. I drained the oil, then added 6 qts, changed the filter and spun the oil pump to clean out the milkshake. Actually it doesn't look like there was that much water in there, but it doesn't take much to make a mess of things.
While I was looking things over I noticed some rust at the intake runners. Got a flashlight and sure enough there was water setting on top of the valves. I use a spunge and wd-40 to collect the water. Looks like there are signs of rust in the cylinders that had there valves open.
Unfortunetly it has sat for 3 weeks since out last outing, if I would have checked the oil that day, it would have been cleaned up the same day. Now I'm guessing it needs to be torn down. What do you think?
Ron
My uncle had told me that his 73 Rogers had a 5/8 bottom (lake boat) and that Roger had a lighter layup schedule for race boats. If you look at the tape the glass is 3/8 without the gel. My Advantage was 11/16 were they cutout for the intake. Maybe this is standard, I expected the bottom to thicker. Anmyone else cut in a fin lately.
The glass at or near the intake area is typically three time thicker than the rest of the bottom..I was there the day they cut out the bottom and the transom for the pump. Took both pieces home with me, made a clock with the transom piece.
11/16", wholly crap, that hull would weigh in at "OMG" #....
My Renegade had a bottom that was 1/4" and the deck felt like you could poke your finger through it. :screwy:

I vote black oxide grade 8
Dude you have done a awesome job for not being so mechanically inclined! Your boat looks sweet and so does the trailer! I hope you got to enjoy it this past summer quite a bit. You have given me some great ideas to do on my 65 beaver. Thanks for the great thread and good luck with the rest! :thumbup:Thanks Beav, and welcome to the site.
What's scary, the hole is already cut in the bottom. For me, that's the scary part ::)
Just curious, could be taken as constructive criticism, or me poking my opinion where it don't belong, but...
why didn't you just move the crossmember forward? I think it would have been less work in the long run, possibly a lot stronger too.
Nice work, just seems like a lot of work for the task... :-\
Don't mind me, I am just another F-ing Monday morning quarterback. :screwy:

Alright the trailer is done, again.
The fin should fit with room to spare.
A little cutting, a little welding and some paint.
Had to buy a 10' stick of the 2 x 3 x 3/16 tubing, but its done and its stout.
Now back to this fin dealio, it scares me a bit.
Hope you got a jig for that piece Ron, I need one >:D
