I just put the rocker, lifter, and push rod in a ziplock bag and i'll try to get by the machine shop in the next couple of days. I want to thank you all for your advice and input. Its great to have a place to go to where there are knowledgable people willing to help. Ron

Three steps forward, two steps backwards.

First Step Backwards - Removed the fuel tanks yesterday. Originally was going to order two new tanks from IMCO, but I found some used ones here on the boards for sale.The left one look like it was in good shape, so I used it. The right one was not as nice so I ordered a new one. Turns out I should have replaced both of them. The old tank had a very slow leak, I thought it would be in a seam but it was right in the middle of the bottom panel of the tank. It looked like a small spot of corrosion, but when I pressurized the tank it was a diffinent leak. Called IMCO today and ordered a new left tank.

Second Step Backwards - Also removed the right tank. Turns out I didn't leave enough clearance between the top rear outside corner of the tanks and the radius sides of the hull. The flex in the bottom pushed the back corners of the tanks into the radius sides of the hull and starred the gelcoat.

This learning curve is killing me.

Damn Ron, I'm sick reading this. I know you'll get it all worked out and besides, that boat as it sets right now with no motor or tanks is nicer than 99% of them out of there. You did a fantastic job and you'll get those issues worked out too.

Thanks John, I do kind of kick myself for some of these things that come up that seam so obvious after the fact. I would like to get thru these last couple of hurdles and enjoy the boat. I may have another Rogers that needs restoring joining the fleet late next spring. It's my uncle's old boat.
How's your motor coming along and are you going to make a So Cal trip next year?

God I love those old pictures. I have no experiances like that as I didnt discover these boats till I was in my 40's but can so appreciate the good times those pictures represent.

Just picked up a "donor" motor tonight.. My old motor was too nice to gut and make into something different so it's going to stay on the stand after freshening up in case something happens with the "donor"......

Jan says I can have some play money after the holidays and the IRS robs us and I can't wait. Not gonna be stupid but I really would like to step it up a bit...

damn man! I just read your entire thread and I gotta say damn nice work sir. That sucks you had to pull your tanks out. I have a boat that I have been trying to get together all year... and if my tanks have to be cut out again I'll flip out so bad... I feel for ya man. But hey it looks great... Its nice to see a project that has been finished. Cant wait for mine to be done.

Im thinking this is like an "encounter group " for guys who want/enjoy long term never end projects like we all have , must be some kind of sickness (but I love it I've been building that "go cart" I always wanted as a kid for the last 30+ years

I did get my new left side tank from IMCO today, but I dont think were going to break 60 degrees this weekend. Not sure if I should glass them in in this kind of weather. I guess could just mix the the resin a little hot. I also need to go by and check on the motor tomarrow.

SAFETY FIRST
Just glassed in the tanks again. Kind of chilly out there tonight, around 50, so the doors are closed and the propane heater is blasting. Vance has got the blow dryer trying to get the resin to kick. I'm thinking to hick with that, lets get some serious heat in there. I kept waiting for the flash explosion, fumes were strong and I got a little buzz going.

That 20 degree stuff doesn't sound to good to me. Thats why were in So Cal. Just a hand full of days in the 50's every year.

Damn, that sounds good. Spent a ton of hours in my truck on outages including missing Christmas Eve with Jan's family and the kids. Sucked missing it but since we were trying to get the curcuit that my daughter and family lives off of, it was a bit more motivating to get them back in power.

Snow and ice have tapered off now and it supposed to get into the low 40s for a while so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Mounted a pump brace in on Sunday. Right now the brace is just wedged tight under the rail kit. I may just leave it like that for now.

Found water in the oil, looks like it sprung a leak at the intake. I drained the oil, then added 6 qts, changed the filter and spun the oil pump to clean out the milkshake. Actually it doesn't look like there was that much water in there, but it doesn't take much to make a mess of things.
While I was looking things over I noticed some rust at the intake runners. Got a flashlight and sure enough there was water setting on top of the valves. I use a spunge and wd-40 to collect the water. Looks like there are signs of rust in the cylinders that had there valves open.
Unfortunetly it has sat for 3 weeks since out last outing, if I would have checked the oil that day, it would have been cleaned up the same day. Now I'm guessing it needs to be torn down. What do you think?

Ron, for the price of the gaskets, I would tear it down, it would minimize the damage to the pistons and rings and would probably clean up with some Scotch Brite, best case scenario I would run a bunch of Marvel Mystery down it throat and turn it over a few times to minimize the damage, as far as the pump brace, nice job, however I would be sure to bolt it up hard to the rails, I'm thinking it will make a buttload of unwanted knocking while underway, just my .02c, looks killer though.

Thanks GT, took your advise and tore it down. Apparently its been trying to burn water and scored the cylinders. I'll take the block in and see if it can be cleaned up. If it has to be bored, it will become my 496 block. I have another 4 bolt block that is standard and will bore it out to use with my existing 427 rotating assembly which is 30 over. Taking the heads in also and see if they will clean up. Slight surface rust on the valve stems from passing water.

Thanks John, even with the set backs i'm still having fun. I tore down another motor today and will take that block in tomorrow if I have time. This block is standard so we'll bore it 30 and run the same rotating assembly. The old block needs to be bored. It may be saved for a later project.
I been kicking around the idea of buying one of those 502 World blocks. The World and Dart blocks will run the mark 4 pans and 2 piece rear mains. This would save us from having different pans and standardize things a little.
Any opinions on these blocks?

Skip, how do you like your old valve covers?
Well we stole the heads off of the Advantage and added the evac tubes to our headers. Omar let us borrow his headers at Puddingstone, really cleaned things up. Thanks Omar.
Tomorrow we'll drop in the dist. and hopefully it comes back to life for one more race. If everything goes right, we should be in Parker on thursday.

Boat fired right up tonight but the alt. started throwing sparks. I'll steal the alt off the Advantage in the morning.
Omar I may end up bringing your stuff up to you on a saturday. I've got it at the shop and i'm trying to avoid that place until monday.
I had tires put on some old US slotted mags that I had laying around, they look pretty cool on the trailer.
