So the project officially got started today. I needed to get the legal work taken care of first so I headed down to the DMV. After 2 hours, I left with the boat registered and the trailer has a temp registration so I can bring it in for them to verify the numbers on it since they could not find it in the system. (which is funny because the trailer has 2000 tags on it, the boat had '84). I need to re-wire the entire trailer before this is done. I am just happy I got the boat registered with no serious problems. She did try to change the Hull ID Numbers, but I talked her out of it since the ID Numbers hold historical value to the boat itself.
Also, last night I sanded down on the bow where there was some racer names painted. I revealed the boat's owner was Jeff Millet, the Captain was D.J. Millet, and the crew was K____ Millet. So does anyone know the Millet family? I'd love to get some pictures of this boat when it was in its prime.
The actual grunt work of this project is pretty far out. I wont get started on it for some time.

I know someone somewhere knows this boat 'cause it kicked their ass. It had a lot of good HQ parts on it before I got to it.

What all did it have on it?
All I can remember that you told me about (that is significant to mention) was the SS impeller and the transom holes have been bored out to 4" ports, along with the messy surprise under the bow. ;D

All was very old school, probably assembled in/from the 70's. A rectangular port big block Chevy, tunnel ram, huge (unknown actual size) double pump carb, ss "B" impellor (high RPM's), ancient looking loader grate, a wedge on the pump to tune it's plane, ? 10 quarts of race oil in the bow, a really old school race scoop (which I have), and I don't know what else. It just seems that's a lot of high end parts when you consider when they were (probably) put on the boat.
Have you been able to talk with anyone who knew/may have raced against this boat?

"... We used to take co-riders back then and in my first circle race at Castaic I had my hi-school chum Craig Peterson in the boat. We had a good start and true to form, the Raspberry left the other boats well behind. We got to the first turn after the long first straight ahead of the pack and started the turn. The Raspberry dropped the nose, hooked and spun 360--twice. On the first turn, my co rider went out. Having a death grip on the steering wheel, it took me a little longer, and I went out on the second turn. Peterson surfaced yelling "my watch is gone" and then "my wallet is gone too." He also lost his shoes, but we found one about a year later in the bow of the boat. We didn't know any better, we just got into the boat street dress and all and raced. That was my first time in the water in a race. I was really sore for several days..."

yeah, i just read that article rod....this guys stories are amazing.....im getting a whole hell of a lot more then i expected .....i sure opened a nice fat can of worms.

Awesome!! You should paint it a gay ased color, put a windshield on it, and then a strap-on hanging off the back. Or, you could just restore it to what it once was. Hmmm... ???
I'd also like to point out that it has a single four barrel tunnel ram on it. I got a single four barrel tunnel ram with it when I bought it. I wonder if it's the same one? I emailed Craig asking him but he never replied. It's on eBay (it was listed before you found the original owner) and it is eBay Item number: 110101415741 . Just thought you might want to see it.
Also kind of interesting, I got a really old school scoop with the boat, which I still have, and just knew it was the original scoop for that boat. It's not. ;D

This project is gonna be one for the history books . I'll have a single four TR for ya just to keep it period correct . You dont know how lucky you are to have found a previous owner.

Damn that thing needs a lot of work done to it, pretty much everything except stringer/transom replacement. But the potential, as a finished project, is huge!

Today I got to hang out with Craig and Tom (The original owner and his childhood friend). They had many stories, pictures and magazine articles to share about this boat.

Did you ever find out if that tr on eBay is the original tr for that boat? Has Craig shown any interest in getting the project from you? And lastly, I think you should paint it tan with gold sparkley trim.

he mentioned that it had several motors in it durring its time. I didnt get a chance to ask him about the TR that you have.
He hasnt shown any interest, but Tom cracked a joke about him being the 'Money Man' for the project.....Craig was quick to shoot it down referencing that hes already a 'Money Man' to his kids haha....

If you guys havent been watching, theres a thread on hotboat that I started when I originally was looking for the original owner of this boat. Craig and everyone who has any memories of this boat has chimed in to share their stories....it is truly a priceless thread.

as you mentioned weird i had to go back and look really hard, it looks like a droop with a homemade diverter.
pretty cool considering what year that was.

Ground up total rebuild definately. $ can buy a lot of things but it can't buy history like that boat has.

Buy the way I was just thinking, how straight is the bottom? Take about a 6-8 foot straight edge and check the keel and each strake. My guess is that over the years the old Rasberry has a bit of droop in her kaboose. With that big old prow hanging out in the front it would be well worth the check and less expsnsive than the life insurance required to keep your family thinking kindly of you after your passing. I'm sure that Jeff Bennett would love to strighten her up. I'll help too if the beers are cold

Even though we had lots of stories there were some real visionaries out there that our team was lucky enough to work with. The short droop snoot and one of a kind up-down nozzel was fabricated by Jack McClure. He let us borrow the one you see in the closeup photos. Later I thing Craig got one built for him by JAck. This guy realy knows his stuff. (i.e. he still does and still works in the industry). The inside of that dude was as smooth as a teflon skillet and I think that a Mr. Place vainly tried to copy it and still sold a bazillion of them, known today as Place Diverter.

Wow somemore great history. Thank you for the info. Jack Mc is a great guy and has tons of good info. You can still see him peddling his cruiser up and down the pits lending a helping hand at the NJBA dragboat races. When I got involved in the sport Jack was one of the key guys that I got my info from.
So I bet Jack wishes he pattented that and or took it the route Place did.
I wish Jack would come out to some of our SCSC/APBA Nostalgia Jet races. You are more than welcome to come hang with Team SoCal Jet Boats at Parker on the weekend of the 21st of April.

I'm 42 and haven't been called a youngster since my grandpa passed away. ;D As far as using the word "wierd" I didn't think it would be stepping on anyone's toe's, I guess I should have used the word "different". In reality, nothing gets my heart pounding faster than old school shit exactly like that which is why I'm building the boat that I have and the hot rod that I have. Perhaps my post reads differently than how I meant it to be read, but...
I have nothing but respect for you/those old time jet boater's, hot rodder's, and backyard engineer's. ;)

No disrespect intended on the age quip. We did things to pumps back then that no one would believe today. I think we had one pump with 5 lbs of epoxy putty in it trying to smoothout the flow. Jack's work was like looking at a 500 hp watch.

Thanks for the advice and I will take it. The entire boat is going to get an overhaul and no shortcuts are going to be taken.
I will keep your offer in mind. Beers are always on ice for anyone who helps out with the boat. Hotrod and marcsrollin are going to be the first to attest to it. Anyone from the Raspberry crew back in the day is more then welcome to swing by, shoot the shit, and help out or just watch us youngins put our blood, sweat and tears into it as you guys did in your day.

No it was not an oh shit pad. We were all so buff and full of our selves that it was a back rest for the co-pilot so he could turn around and look back to the skier, tube rider or the competition while going 80+ and wavr by-by.

I took all of the interior out this morning before i dragged it to the Costa Mesa DMV.....when i got back home and put the interior back in....i set it back up as would have been....there is a few missing pieces including that pad. I am sure i can mock something up to what i see in the picture.
The main pieces are still there and thats whats important. I can use the old wood as templates for when I go to cut the new stuff.

I heard someone somewhere call the uphosltered front engine cover/pulley cover a "doghouse" once. I have the doghouse out of your '71. When we cross paths again remind me - because I will forget - to bring you your boats doghouse. It's shot but it's still a real good pattern.

haha...no...kyles boat is a relic and is being restored to be a lake boat with a sbc 350 in it.
this boat has no long term plans yet....just thrashing on it to make it to parker thanksgiving weekend.

Don't know if you guys have seen my 70 16' 6 weiman (rogers) but it looks almost identical ,kind of unique has a 428 ford FE .What do you think Brad suppose this could be a pre-cyclone?BTW this boat was stored in socal indoors for the last 14 years ,has original GC ,rug and upholstry Tom

Those are some big ass valve covers you got there. That is looking VERY clean Brad. Good job with the aesthetics of the motor. The black look is bitchin. Can't wait to hear how she's gonna run...
P.S.
Let me know when you're ready for one of those worked berkeley race bowls. They're all ready to go. They came off boats that were doing over 100, then the boat owners went with the stock Aggressor and now theyre doing 110+ with only a bowl change... lol.
