are you going to regel it in the garage?

We will be doing it at a friends (BIG) garage set up for flipping, geling and laying up molds. All of the glass work will be done there I think.

Finally got the boat back to its original state. 2 gallons of paint remover, 1 roll of 80 grit DA discs, 40 razor blades and approx. 100 hours of labor.
I don't know what kind of paint was used on it but, it was some tuff stuff for sure.

Now starting the glass work...
A good friend of mine Adam that owns Kober Kat boats will be doing this. Every hole that doesn't need to be there will be filled including the old through transom exaust holes and the old bow rail holes.

I never thought I would be looking forward to grinding 1/4 inch deep pockets all over my boat but, it feels good that it will be done right.
Title: Re: 1973 Spectra 20 Jet
Post by: CauseforDivorce on February 06, 2014, 08:42:25 AM
This is close to what it will look like when its done. the wood grain was destroyed with a big spider so keeping that is out of the question now. I would have to grind the whole side to get it to match right. It would probably look like a hack job when it was done.
I'm going to keep the nostalgic lines of a Spectra but, give it an updated look without over doing it. The wood grain will be painted over with a charcoal grey metallic, base white, all of the red with a bright blue metallic and a red metallic 1/4 in. pinstripe outlining all of the blue.
I asked my 8 yr old what color he wanted the boat to be and he said like the American flag colors. NOW, CAN I ARGUE WITH THAT... :D :D :D

This was my first clue that this boat needed to go back down to the bones.
Nothing like these plastic screw plugs holding the cleats on... :screwy:
Title: Re: 1973 Spectra 20 Jet
Post by: CauseforDivorce on February 06, 2014, 09:23:30 AM
There has been a change in plans for the gel,,, With the amount of repairs being done and given it's history of cracking. I'm afraid that if I do this it will crack again. So I am trying to  find primers and paints that will allow some flexibility in the glass without cracking the paint. I am looking very closely at additives like are used in paints for plastic bumpers on cars. I am aware that if the hull is abused again like it was in the past some stress cracks will reappear >:( but, it will make it a lot easier to fix with standard off the shelf colors.

If anyone has any ideas or experience with this,,, PLEASE DONT BE SHY...I'm all ears.

This weekend I will be putting the engine back in to figure out where the new exaust holes will be in the transom. After they are cut, pull the engine back out and GO TO TOWN ON IT!
A lot of thanks to 78Southwind (Jerry) for finding these headers for me  No more logs!
The exaust will be done like ka0tyk on his Bahner.

Awesome work! I have a soft spot for Spectra 20s as that's what I grew up on.

The new paint scheme will look great

I can't wait to see the finished product.

Hopefully in primer today if all goes as planned...
Then block it some more..

Shot a high build primer. Used Evercoat Feather Fill. This stuff is great. Its a sprayable filler for fiberglass with a catalyst like bondo and you can only thin it 10% with acetone.

The boat paint layout looks awesome. As far as the additives for the plastic bumpers, when I used to paint cars we didn't use any of the additives as the paint has some flex in it. The additives didn't seem to help. This was 8 years ago. If the glass cracks the paint will crack on top of it. If you have someone helping you and has used a good one then maybe they are better today. Any catalyzed paint should give you a great job. Are you doing base and clear? Put all you striping under clear too. Keep the pics coming.

That is how I paint it. The clear will help protect everything under it and gives you a chance to fix any imperfections in the colors. Should look great for years to come.

Post by: CauseforDivorce on March 04, 2014, 03:27:28 PM
Thanks,
This was way more than I expected and still not perfect. Its 100 times better than it was for sure... This boat had a lot of pin holes and cracks in the gel. Some places like the top areas off the boat which would be the bottom of the mold, were very heavily loaded with the red gel. Some areas were super thin on the sides to 1/8" or better in the low spots in the mold. Where ever I sanded to bare glass there was air bubbles, could explain the horrific amount of stress cracks.
If I had it to do over again, I would wrap the whole boat in one layer of glass and build from there.

Back to blocking... :banghead:
Found some bad spots, On the first coat, I found more small stress cracks on the top of the gunnels. Filled them and blocked the whole boat. Also got some more waves out of it that showed up with a nice gloss coat. Bought more paint and going to do it again tomorrow after work. This time all the crap is gone I'm sure...YEA RIGHT!
Hopefully this time will do it. I made a mistake by shooting white over gray laquer primer surfacer, should of tinted it white. I went through 7.5 qts of mixed material and it didn't cover all the way. Now the boat is sealed and I think 3 qts will finish it.
Then finally after 340 hrs of stripping, grinding, glass work, sanding, building, priming, blocking and painting I CAN GO ON TO SOMETHING ELSE ;D
Not to mention approx. 12 cases of beer! I think I will be keeping this boat for a while...

Base white is done. Iwas able to get about 90% of the waves and low spots out of it and it looks like I got all of the stress cracks for now. Time to scuff and do the stripes.

A couple stress cracks already came back but they only show themselves when the boat cooks in the sun. As soon as it cools down they go away. If that is all that came back after fixing at least 100 or more Im think I did pretty good.

If you don't grind the gel coat all the way into the glass and even grind the glass until there gone the stress cracks will always come back. It's just like concrete if you poor a layer of concrete over a cracked piece of concrete the cracks will migrate into the new concrete

I'll be honest...The time did come where I finally said enough is enough. Ground out alot of cracks and rebuilt a couple of corners and filled alot of unnecessary holes. Its alot of work but, I am very happy with it so far.

The boat haa been clear coated and the AZ numbers are getting painted on monday!
Still wiring and putting the rest of it together. Really late nights! Going to be cutting it close for the AVI...things are getting crossed off the list quick now. Even took Wednesday,  Thursday and Friday off work to make sure it's done...

The new ignition will be installed today. I was running a UNILITE and now going to Pertronix.
Hopefully the changes will be positive...
Rewarder TT headers w/ 2 1/4" primaries instead of logs
Pertronix instead of a Unilite
A impeller instead of a AA
Blueprinted pump and a Place Diverter also changing out the sport loader for a stock grate per HallettDaves recommendation.

It could go either way at this point...opted for cut vynel AZ numbers becuase there s not enough time to paint them...
Still have to do exaust...some wiring and install interior... then pack wheel bearings...
Definitely wont be doing the cut and buff because I still need to build up alot more clear. Also won't be getting the vynel for the side panels for 2 weeks but on a good note it will get fired up today:D

Nope no third bracket it looks like alot is hanging over on the sides but its the picture. I will be going to my dad's machine shop and making aluminum steps on his CNC mill.
I'm going to use 3/8 plate, rough cut the profile and have it hard anodized and then finish the profile. Wherever it was cut will be a nice machined edge.

I decided to put the dumps in the exhaust.  Hopefully they are not too close. Im trying to avoid any chace of reversion and keep the exaust hose cool since they are below the water line.

It's gonna need a T with a pressure valve that allows the water to go a different route at Idle. It will get sucked back into the engine at idle without it.

IT'S OFFICIAL !!!!!
57 mph on the 1fst run still have more to do...
It's not getting enough fuel... I think that 1/2" to 2 3/8" on carbs will do it...
No reversion problems with water delivery wide open on pump and headers...
Im a very happy boy and so is my 11 year old son that got to drive the boat flat out and throw the "ROOST" that he loves so much thanks to rivertard!
Still trying to make Big River.
