Title: 1975 DiMarco Circle Boat Project "SoCalJetBoats Exclusive"
Post by: jyeager on November 09, 2013, 05:30:28 PM
Alright guys, as promised. Here is my new project. I will only be posting updated here on SoCalJetBoats because well........ I am tired of the other sites, and all the bull crap.

After the demise of my first boat. Southwind 18. I got an amazing check back from my insurance company and immediately started looking for a replacement boat. "thanks state farm"

I Found an add on craigslist up in santa barbara listed as "jet boat"
I talked to an older guy. After talking to him all i can say is "GOLD".

1975 DiMarco Circle boat Weighed at 400lbs weight it when i got home with the intake tanks and calgo and gauges 423 lbs.
It has 2X4 oak stingers and 1/4 inch round oak in the strakes.
it came with

*bitchen stainless russle tanks
*Calgo steering
* Split bowl berkley jet with a stainless b- impeller
*Shoe and ride plate set up
* Set of BBC Bassett headers "that are on my SWTD"
*seats that are ready to fall apart
* An awesome competition trailer with WHITE WALL TIRES!!

The guy cut me an awesome deal! 1400$ for everything.

the only bad thing is that there are stress cracks all over the deck and drivers side.
What ever. It doesn't bother me too much.

The Power Plant will be the Ford 460 out of the southwind 18

First thing i did is pulled the jet and it went to B1 for new bearings and wear ring, new 2* back cut shoe and loader is on its way.

Most likely will set the pump back. Just dont know how far yet.

Next thing was to put new rails in the boat. We went with a full rail deal this time. Got motor plates from tom at Jet boat performance. I used countersunk stringer washers and countersunk allen bolts for hardware.

thats as far as ive gotten.  More to follow.

Is this boat #3 in your stable Jake or is this just the replacement for the total?  I could be wrong but I think that cracking or checking on the deck could be from heavy or extra thick gel when they sprayed it.  Doesn't look like it goes into the glass does it?

Yeah it puts it at 3. The Mach 1 is mine and my dads boat. So more like 2 and 1/2
The gel is cracked into the glass iam sure. I don't care right now. I'll get it re done at some point but for now it's fine. The owner b4 me had it siting in the sun with nothing but a blue tarp on it for 10 years. So iam sure that had something to do with it.

Thanks keith, as of right now it will be my river runner. Maybe in the future i will. It will need a lot more HP though if i do. The Swtd is going to Race only this winter.

Alright boys and girls.
The motor went in this afternoon. The Intake is staying in the stock location for now and is set at 3.7* in relation to keel. The motor went in at 3.9* and 26 inches from the transom. That should do the job for the drive line, it should be around 15 inches long.  The stock front sump oil pan in about an Inch from the floor.

the second thing i got done today was the pump brace.
I am trying to keep the rigging in this boat as clean and light as possible. I want to keep all the bolts alan head  and either counter sunk in the aluminum or use counter sunk stringer washers.

The brace is made from 1/4 inch aluminum, i am only using drill bits, hole saw, and a jig saw for all the "milled looking cut out"

Looks real nice Jake.  So what you got in the motor?  You seem to be rigging for some decent HP.  I was trying to look under that scoop but I see nothing.  The scoop kind of reminds me of a 6 year old wearing daddies cowboy hat.  ::)

Greg, its a 480hp Dove 2a2 heads. Its a Ferd. It pushed that green 18 southwind to about 75 or so @5200. The Previous owner had told me the area where the intake is set is very thin. Less than a half inch. Thats the reason for the pump brace.
I was going to run that same scoop on the SWTD but didn't. Its a bit too big for a single 850 but, its what i got for now. I am working on a scoop tray right now. My old man said this after noon "that scoop reminds me of darth helmet" "its to big"

Looks sweet, I really like it when the scoop is mounted low to the point it's almost sitting on the intake. Hides a lot of the ugly and well let's be honest ferds is some ugly motors. Move it far enough forward so you can hide the distributor and mount it as low as possible. And then when you want to sell it let me know so I can come get it.

Well after the long weekend i got a few things done on the DiMarco.
I continued the Milled look on the Rail kit, man that was a lot of work. Well worth it though.
Also counter sunk the mount blocks. I really love the look of all the counter sunk hardware so far! :screwy: :banghead: ;D ;D ;D

I also got a pan made for the scoop. its almost done, just need to make a way to mount it down and add some duze fasteners. Photos of the pan will be up tomorrow.
The seats Pictured will not be used, they were just for mock up.

Haven't got too much done in the last few days. Got the scoop primered with some Prestec high build primer. Sprayed on about 4 coats. One light coat to start and then 3 good wet coats.

Got some color on the scoop today. Scuffed up the primer with 220 Then shot it with a half prestec snow white gel and half prestec super clear, thinned it down about 4% with acetone and sprayed it with a harbor freight gun. Its almost a walk away finish.

Alright, wire loom is done for now.
i used 12 gauge for the Hot and Grounds and 14 gauge for the senders and ect...

I like to braid all my wire. I braid 3 wires at a time. I put 3 wires in a vise and clamp them down.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi216.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc168%2Fjyeager04%2FIMG_2505_zps9445d1e0.jpg&hash=7b9bbd808cacfa6be7bcf649db0de669012db8fc) (http://s216.photobucket.com/user/jyeager04/media/IMG_2505_zps9445d1e0.jpg.html)

Then stretch them out and put the other side in a drill

then i spin the wires till they are nice and wound. i did this to all 3 sets

then put the connectors on and heat shrinked them

Connected to two 4 pole boxes.  one side for hot, ground, and ignition. the other side for senders and ect.

i got the scoop mounted to the tray today.

I am using dzus fasteners on to mount it to the tray.
I drilled 1/2 inch hole then counter sunk the fiberglass so the dzus fastener would sit flat.

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi216.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc168%2Fjyeager04%2FIMG_1081_zpsce7fc027.jpg&hash=de0e64a0351a1492c6bcf6bd4fb41b4e24eae271) (http://s216.photobucket.com/user/jyeager04/media/IMG_1081_zpsce7fc027.jpg.html)

I did all of the holes and marked the scoop tray. Then i pop riveted the dzus fasteners on the scoop

 (https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi216.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc168%2Fjyeager04%2FIMG_3900_zps3ed0c222.jpg&hash=c1881fbace63a8348634bf3ae83f0b0ca2cbab3c) (http://s216.photobucket.com/user/jyeager04/media/IMG_3900_zps3ed0c222.jpg.html)

after that i pop riveted the wires that keep the scoop on the tray

I've gotten really good with a jigsaw. Haha traced the circle and drilled holes to fit the jigsaw blade. Wd-40 and a good metal blade.

well got most of the wiring done today. All that left is to hook up the battery and starter, run the wire up to the dash and hook up the gauges and start button and ect.
Also got the start button, bildge pump switch, and the gauges in as well.  Excuse the grease and dirt on the dash.  :screwy:

Picked up about half of the fittings from one of my sponsors for the 177 boat this afternoon. Man that really helps lol Just one of the Hose ends was 15.00$ Da Hell!!!????
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi216.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc168%2Fjyeager04%2FIMG_6270_zps538ae19c.jpg&hash=4a657363b4828906034870a5291cc2864b334ef5) (http://s216.photobucket.com/user/jyeager04/media/IMG_6270_zps538ae19c.jpg.html)

I am pluming all the fuel with -8 AN's and stainless steel line.
The water will be -8AN's in to an gate valve and a pressure relief valve. -10 AN out.

Anybody who had done this knows that it sucks. But..... I picked up a tool that makes putting the fittings on the hose super easy!!!!! :screwy: :sly: >:D ;D

Its called the KOUL TOOL. You put the part of the AN that goes over the hose in the KoUl tool
BUY THIS TOOL! It makes assembling AN's easy!!!!!

Well a little update. I got the scoop hold down done today. used a 1/4 inch piece of aluminum, roughed out a shape and stuck it under the carb. Then i took some 1/2 inch round aluminum and drilled and taped each end for a 3/8 thread. Then made the holes on the scoop tray and the plate. Its still a rough piece, ill work on making it look better tomorrow. Topped off the hold down with countersunk stringer washers on top of the scoop tray.

haha i have a drawer of "extras" thats a couple hundred bucks.

progress is looking great!  i love that you're making parts with just some simple tools and elbow grease.  THATS how you get shit done!     you can turn around and go "i made that with my own two hands..."

Thank you ka0tyk. Why spend thousands on parts when you can make them yourself?  Thats my take on it anyways, and its alot of fun.  :screwy:
Your build is coming along nicely ka0tyk. I am excited to see your finished product.

Well, got a diverter stop made up today. I roughed out a inch by an inch piece of 3/4 inch aluminum.  Drilled a hole in one side with a 1/4 inch drill and tapped it with a 5/16th tap.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi216.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc168%2Fjyeager04%2FIMG_6660_zpse1f9f1d0.jpg&hash=a6c706e1dd813dda089e30ec3707864a87899f42) (http://s216.photobucket.com/user/jyeager04/media/IMG_6660_zpse1f9f1d0.jpg.html)

The i drilled 2 holes on the other side with the same and tapped the same

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi216.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc168%2Fjyeager04%2FIMG_6670_zpsffed5ba8.jpg&hash=127996c5bb0596487d3cf66eb7aaa6b8d92c0868) (http://s216.photobucket.com/user/jyeager04/media/IMG_6670_zpsffed5ba8.jpg.html)

Then i drilled the 2 holes on the diverter arm and mounted it. The backing plate is just so the bolts would tighten up. ill replace them with button head allens tomorrow.

You'll see stops like that that on most race boats. In most cases having the diverter all the way up is not the best for performance. I only run 6 degrees of up nozzle in the orange boat. I think its a requirement for Comp jet as well.

Well i havet got much done do to one major thing i was hoping to avoid. The stupid loader grate was stuck on the intake. It was tapped with 5/8ths bolts and had steal Slotted head bolts that were rusted in there. So i had no choice but to pop the intake out.
Ill have to mill out the rusted bolt holes. My old Drill wont do the job.

Got some glass work done around the intake and transom this afternoon.
When i removed the intake i took some glass with it. Also where the keel was clearanced for the ride plate was way too thin. .075 thin to be exact

The last thing i did was fix part of the transom that was separating from the fiberglass.
I ground out the area and stuffed it full of 3 oz cloth, then clamped them back together.

Today i got the intake reset in the boat. I made sure the the shoe was around 1/8 of an inch above keel and the intake was set in at 4.1 degrees. ALSO F that sea going epoxy! it sucks to work with! Ill have to flip the boat over to blend the intake entry here in a few days.

Well i got the boat flipped over with help from my dad, uncle and grandpa. That thing doesn't weigh all that much. It only took 4 of us to take it off the trailer and flip it.
Before we flipped it, i put all new stainless bolts and nylocks in the intake.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi216.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc168%2Fjyeager04%2FIMG_2938_zpsae180f7c.jpg&hash=c732e8bd4349979dd1568703ef4735d3ac7bdaae) (http://s216.photobucket.com/user/jyeager04/media/IMG_2938_zpsae180f7c.jpg.html)

Then i added more epoxy and some waterproof bodyfiller to blend in the intake, bolt holes and some small pin holes from the glass. sanded it all down and speed coated the bottom.

Well, she runs! And well! Got clocked around 77 on Sunday by my buddy at ADBA. Super stoked on her and so is my sister.

.... The orange boat moved up in the McIntyre standings to number #2.

So does Fry Know you've leap frogged him in the standings?

I came down Sat all the way into your lagoon but couldn't find any fast boats to run so, I went back to Hidden Beaches.  ;)

It was probably just before noon.  You were probably still sleeping off the Fireball from the night before.
I met up with Steve86ta and his group and hung out for a while.  They were up above the 10. Then we went back to jungle beach for the afternoon.
Heard you guy's, or at least Bob came up to the beach Friday I think.  We were up river by the damn most of that day.
