1975 Mandella Flatbottom Jet
« on: April 13, 2019, 10:10:11 AM »
I picked up a '75 Mandella flatbottom jet at the end of last year. It was last registered in '05. It sat covered, but water got in the boat and unfortunately the motor.

Lee (69Kona) is building the motor and pump for the boat. Hopefully he can chime in on the specifics of the motor build.

So far I've stripped the interior and most of the old rigging from the boat. The plan is:

Bring back the shine of the floors.

Replace the fiberglass tanks with aluminum or stainless.

Repair the interior wood since the material still in excellent shape.

Re-rig the boat as clean as possible.

The motor parts were polished at one point, but after sitting for fourteen years outside they were in sad shape. My focus on this project lately has been painting and polishing all the parts going back on the motor.

Next up is fiberglass work! One fuel tank is out. They laid these tanks up thicker than some boats I've seen!

The pics below are from the day I brought it home.

Here are some pics of when it was in one piece. Anyone recognize where they are on the water? It's The Cove (formerly Riviera) in Blythe. I think it's pretty cool this boat was used on a stretch of river I frequent.

The motor is .030 over .
Zero decked the block
Milled the G heads for smaller combustion chambers
I went to a 45* seat angle instead of the stock 30*  on the valve seats and put the big valves and isky valve springs for the comp cam 292
Forged pistons 10:1 compression
Oiling mods
Balanced the rotating assembly
Motor will make some killer torque

Here's some before and after on the motor parts. Whatever I couldn't polish I painted.

Cool looking boat. How do these ride?

Be careful when tightening those valve covers. I have the same ones and snapped that bolting flange real easy.

Looking forward to see how it turns out.

Thanks for the heads up. I'd be bummed after all the time I spent on them!

I've talked to a couple guys that owned a Mandella flat.  They don't handle like a typical jet, but nothing weird. We shall see!!

I pieced together a solid ignition system. I had the 6AL box left over from an old motor and found a good deal on the distributor.

Did you do the polishing yourself? If so, great job.

I saved a few pictures of hat boat to my phone when you first posted it up. I was just looking at it the other day wondering what happened to it. Glad to see it 🤟

Thank you!! It's been a longer than expected project and I almost sold it along the way, but it's how these things go.

I'm happy with how it's turning out. I can't wait to get it out on the water for a little winter run.
