HERE IS MY WINTER PROJECT.IT A 1978 TROPHY CUSTOM.IT HAS A BBF 460.IT HAS A 12JC-A BERK PUMP.I HOPE TO HAVE THE MOTOR REBUILT,PAINTED, AND INTERIOR DONE FOR NEXT SUMMER.

Thanks Emanon for the comment.Another Arizona guy.Maybe when I get this boat up and running we will see you at one of the lakes.I think Im getting it painted real soon.My wife is finally letting me spend a little bit of money.

Any body know what a 25' citation is worth? Has 455 olds, unknown jet.

25' is a lot of boat for a jet....i have never seen anything for 21' with a jet before ???

Here is some pics of my interior.It's all one piece.Two bucket seats in front and a "u" shape bench in back.I don't have much room,but I think it will work ok.I will try to finish up tonight and I will get more pics.

I have a few questions for ya....
What kind of wood are you using? are you coating it with resin? what thickness is the wood?
keep up the good work, summer will be here sooner then you know it!

The wood is seven layer, 3/4 inch ply wood.I will coat the hell out of it with resin.I'm thinking of glassing all the joint areas.Do you guys think that is a good idea?This is my first time doing interior work so any advice would be good.It's not very heavy for being one piece.I'm going to try to make storage areas under the back bench seats.

I am no interior expert either, but i read somewhere it will help a lot if you drill some (1 or 2) quarter sized holes in the base of the seats so water has somewhere to drain so its just not soaking the wood. Of course, coat the walls of the hole as well. Even though you are coating the hell out of it, the wood will still flex and crack over the years and water will seep into the wood and rot it again. It's just an idea, I dont think a couple of holes could hurt.
It looks like you have cut most of your wood so far and i know this would be a bad time to start over, but if you had the time and money and wanted to REALLY do it right....use some treated marine wood. The stuff isnt cheap, it runs $90 for a 4'x8'x3/4" piece. That would really prolong the life of your seats.

That is a good idea about cutting the holes under the seats.I will do that.I wish I could of used the marine plywood,but I could barely afford this stuff.This stuff was $27.00 a sheet.Thanks for the help.Do you think I should glass all the joints?

When I did the seats in my last boat from scratch I glassed all the joints and resined the rest , the upholstery shop said they looked like they would stand a beating! And they did. So I would advise doing so. Boat seats tend to receive a lot of abuse.

Can you guys give me some tips on doing the glass work on my seats.I'm going right now to buy some resin and glass.I've never done any fiberglass work before.I was thinking like 3 inch strips on all the joints.How many layers do I put down?Do I put resin first then the glass and resin over it?Thanks for any help.

I think the 3" strip deal is a good idea. As for the bonding, I would do a cold batch of resin. What I mean is use the minimum amount of hardener so that the resin can soak into the wood of the seats. This will give you the strongest bond. I honestly think one layer of mat will work fine. Make sure resin extends 2" - 3" past mat.
Step 1
Clean seat joint with acetone
Apply cold batch of resin
Lay in mat, make sure mat is fully saturated with resin
Step 2
Sand bonded joint, removing any sharp edges
Clean with Acetone
Apply second coat of resin

I'm not sure if it was right or not, but we rebuilt all the frames on or 19' Tahiti 15 years ago just like you are doing now. We were going to resin the entire frames and glass the joints. A marine upholsterer told us to treat the wood with linseed oil or Thompson's water seal and drill the holes as has already been suggested. Because the marine grade plywood was over the top even 15 years ago, we used the same size plywood you are using and slathered the hell out of them in linseed oil (5 or 6 coats). We also used stainless wood screws (not cheap either) The upholsterer said it allowed the wood to breathe and flex while it repelled water. Given the amount of wear and tear boat seats take, his experience taught him the wood would fracture and break down if glassed. We did use marine grade foam and naugahyde for the remainder We sold the boat a five years after we did this rebuild, so I'm not sure how they have stood the test of time.

My original '76 Sanger built seats are treated wood frames. They have hung in there pritty well. But I have chose to glass all the frames we do now for the extra protection and durrability.

Here' a few more pics of all the wood work done.I'm going to glass all the joint's and cover with resin.I still need to cut holes out in the rear bench for storage.It's all one piece.It's not to heavy.I can take it out of the boat myself.I'm sure after the upholstery it will take two people.

We did almost the exact same set up in my old boat and the issues ended up being leg room for the rear passengers and a spot for a cooler.

I was concerned with both of those.I can't go any further back because of the motor.I think two adults sitting in the corners of the back seat will fit ok.Maybe three with one in the middle.I'm considering building a cooler underneath the back seat.A cooler is very important!

Re phrase that "the cooler is the most important" . You get way more leg room if you do a two piece and the rear just a stright bench with a little leg room behind each of the front seats.
But in your case it looks really good and I would probably just go with what you have already.
That way you have a excuse if too many people want a ride.

Thanks.The only reason I did the little side seats was to cover the stringers.They run the whole lenght of the boat and I thought It would look ugly having the strigers exposed behind the front seats.I also see someone stumbling over them and falling overboard.From the cooler of course!I hope it works ok.

All that really matters is that you have 1 extra seat and a cooler!! Screw the rest!! ;D

That's what the upholstery shop told me to.I have a 2 inch border around all the inside's of the seat's where the foam will sit on top of it and the front of the 2 inch board is where they will put the staples.I'm glassing all the joint's for strength but not in the place's where they need to staple.

Thats some good info. I wouldnt have even thought of that. I would have just glassed it all.

If I'm building one those sun deck type engine covers how much gap would I have leave around edges so it opens close smooth. like the one in the picture

Originally the guys who do cobra boats were goin to do my 18'er's upholstery and he told me to just glass the edges and joints and do a 2" overlap and cover everything else in a good coat of resin and that should seal for another 30 years .

I finally picked up my BBF from the machine shop.Here's what they did,
thermo clean and mag block.
bore and hone block.
deck block.
align hone.
install cam bearings.
They charged me $490.00 for everything.I think it wasn't to expensive.Now I need to get the crank checked out and get the rod's resized and the piston's hung.All I need is more money.I can't wait to start getting it back together.

The wood part of the interior is finished.I haven't had a chance to get it to some shops for quotes.I might have to wait for a little bit to save up some more cash.Atleast now I can get my block painted and get the freeze plugs in it.Have you started your interior yet?I hope to drop off the boat to get painted and drop off the interior at the same time.All I need is more cash!

wow great job on the wood work........i build speaker boxes some times, and they come out cool, but making a whole interior is craziness...looks good, waiting to see pics w/ material on the plywood

Thanks for the comments.I just moved into my new house, and haven't had time to check out this site. It's still in wood form.I hope to start working on it again soon. I built speaker boxes all through high school for my friends.I loved that stuff.I want to build some fiberglass speaker boxes.

You should see what's down at the Aggressor shop... 25' Schiada with a dual drive. She's almost turning 70 with only mid 600 HP.

Wow! You did a great job on the interior. I may pester you a bit when I get that far. Good tip about leaving a band unresined for the staples to go into. I would have never thought of that. John

you can brush on a coat to seal the wood, be sure they use stainless staples

Hello fellas.First of all,thanks for all the help on this site.This is the best jet boat site out there!I am thinking of selling my project boat.I can't ever get time to work on it.I also have a 77 Chevy truck I need to restore.It might take me 20 years to finish this boat.If anyone is intrested I have every part of this boat.It is stripped to get ready for paint and body work.I have all the seats built,they just need to be upholstered.I have all new parts for the 460 ford short block.I had the whole block machined here in Phoenix.All brand name parts.The heads are the only part that I haven't had looked at yet.I also have a brand new Edelbrock RPM intake for it.It comes with a good tandem axle trailer.I'm thinking of throwing it on craigslist.Do you guys have any ideas on a price range?It's a cool boat.I thinks it's kind of rare.I also would trade it for a lifted golf cart.Check out some of the pictures.Thanks TC

Hello everyone. Well I decided to keep my boat and start working on it again. I look at all the work you guys are doing and i'm ready to get started again. This past weekend a couple of my friends and myself started sanding it down getting it ready for paint. I have most of the parts to get the motor back together. I really want to get this thing ready for next summer. I'm sure I will be asking alot of questions again. Thanks to this site i'm motivated again. TC

I will get some progress pics of the body work.I just got back from Montana.I used alot of my boat fund money.We went to a lake in Laurel Montana and did some wakeboarding,and their wasn't a single jet boat around. I didn't see any old school jet boats around town either.The lakes were awesome.They were so smooth.
