A couple of reasons most have taken the foam out is
1. To do a bow repair. This is why I took mine out.
2. Sometimes that foam I gets water logged and is just heavy and rotted. It cleans it up and removes bow weight if it had been water logged. The water may have evaporated, but it might have minerals and scale adding weight.
Some manufacturers used the foam. Some used long, plastic bags filled with little styrofoam balls. Either way, it’s usually a messy clean up.
Some just wanted storage up there.
It’s not necessary to remove. It just depends on the foam’s condition.
I was lucky. My foam seemed like it was made in a mold and placed up there and “glued” in a few places. I had to break it up into about 4 sections. It took me about 1 hour to get it out.
