Title: 21' Ultra Openbow Project
Post by: Brad @ SCJB on March 10, 2014, 04:13:08 PM
Since Sam has a new boat on the way, he needed to make room and didnt have time to mess with this project, so I took it off his hands and I am looking to complete it.

Previous thread Sam made: http://www.socaljetboats.com/projects/mom%27s-ultra-rebuild-!-!-!/ (http://www.socaljetboats.com/projects/mom%27s-ultra-rebuild-!-!-!/)

Overall the boat is a good base for a project. Its a full stringer hull. The majority of the vinyl is in decent condition, just very very dirty.

The bad: it sat for a long time nose down and filled up with water. the floors need to be replaced. Sam had pulled out a bit of the floors already. Also, the wood in all the interior needs to be replaced.

The plan is to replace all the wood (floor and interior) and make due with the vinyl I have. Mechanically it just needs a carb and place diverter nozzle. I will use it for this summer and if all goes well, it will get new paint and vinyl next winter.

I would like to pull the motor (454) and drop the pan n stuff to just make sure everything is sound since its been sitting for so long.

I have a lot of work ahead of me as I am shooting to have this usable for the april trip in less than 5 weeks  :banghead:  :screwy:

Stoked to see this build thread. My dad has a 2006 Ultra Stealth 22' and the floor rotted up like crazy(im guessing how yours did) he replaced it all and glassed it. A lot of Ultra owners(accordinging to my dad) do that with the older stealth's glass the floor because the wood rots every coupple years. Just food for thought... Im digging the open bow!

This boat was stolen at one point and had the HIN ground off. DMV reground numbers into it then it was sold at a police auction in 2000. No idea what the exact year is.

No all the seat wood is rotted too. It sat nose down and uncovered for a few years and filled up with water. Whole open bow interior is dust.

Pulled out all of the wood except the stringers and transum wood which both are in decent condition. Theres a little  subfloor on the outsides of the stringers by the motor. I have to pull the motor to get to it. I'm done for the day. I'm not used to this. Forgot how much I HATE fiberglass. Wtf was I thinking?? Next 4 weeks are going to be hell.

motor fired right up once i got fuel to it.....buttoned up a bunch of things.....still need to finish some small glass work and throw carpet down.

this thing is coming along, but cosmetically its a turd. IF this thing makes it next weekend, dont judge. its still pretty rough. its much better than it was, but it still has a long way to go.

I first sprayed it down with an all purpose cleaner (like simple green) and whiped it down with a paper towel .....i did this to just get the surface dirt off.

Then use some of those mr clean magic erasers and a bowl of water.....following my scrubbing with wiping up the dirt with a clean paper towel.

I actually am using some knock off generic erasers I found at walmart...same price, but you get 6 instead of 4....and they are bigger too i think

After i have cleaned, i spray it down with some Meguiars marine vinyl cleaner/conditioner. Works great

I was turned on to Malco leather and plastic cleaner by a friend who owns a upholstery shop, i was amazed how good this sheit works.
Spray it on and you can see the dirt and stuff start running off. I would stay away from anything to harsh and not meant for vinyl. I had a issue where i used a generic cleaner and had to replace some pieces in my boat
Spend a couple bucks and get the right shit.

just be careful with the magic erasers.  they ARE abrasive and once you burn thru that vinyl layer you'll have a nice bald spot on your interior.  my interior guy told me just to use some dawn soap and water... anything stubborn gets the plastic bristle brush.  doing all white interior will be tough this season to keep clean im sure.  just sitting in the garage i constantly get spots where i put my hand, etc.

well, for the purpose of this project, magic erasers are serving their purpose.....to deep clean the vinyl thats been sitting untouched and uncovered for 4+ years.

I can imagine if you used magic erasers after every weekend you took your boat out it would damage it, but for this deep cleaning or even touching up spots that are stained, it will work fine.

Like anything in life, moderation is key.

So....it wasnt a good weekend overall for the boat.

not more than 3 minutes on the road, the engine hatch popped up, flipped over. It knocked off one of the swim steps then ripped the hatch hinges right out........followed by an 18 wheeler running it over.

The hatch is destroyed. The swim step is banged up but usable.

Friday evening I cruised it up river for about 10 minutes and it stalled...it would start and run for about 5 seconds then stall again. I ended up getting towed in by Wes (thanks bud)

Saturday Art picked up some new fuel filters and I swapped them out...fired it up on the trailer and ran great.....put it in the water and I wouldnt even idle out of the marina. I put it on the trailer and just tried to forget about it and enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Sunday morning I was going through it all in my head trying to figure out what was going on....finally remembered I have a inline aluminum filter between the mechanical pump and the carb.....it came off the race boat and I cant remember the last time I cleaned it out....well, it was clogged all up. I removed it and it ran much better.

I cruised it up to the dam and back...Even towed Art from the Roadrunner back to the bluewater because he ran out of gas...and of course the gas pump at riverland was out of order.

Motor is strong, carb needs some adjustment....and I need some more up angle in the nozzle as its running a bit wet with just 4 degrees of wedge in it.

Also, I need to rebuild the seat bases. I tried to shortcut by using the ones I had, but reinforced them, but they didnt hold up after I hit the first wake causing me to have an instant recliner in the boat lol.

So I'm at home fighting a nasty head cold and got stir crazy from sitting around the house...so decided to work on the boat.

I haven't made any updates on this thread really. I finally got the motor dialed in. Had some issues with the carb but got those ironed out.

Some of you might have read on another thread that I had some issues with the engine hatch. It flew off...ripped the hinges out....and was run over by an 18 wheeler. Its beyond repair but there's enough of it to use as a template.

These things are built a little more intracate than expected....so I'll post some progress pics....but first here is the damage
