Hey, just removed a water pump from the rebuilt street/strip engine (460 ford) I bought. Do I need to reuse the plate behind it behind the block off plate where the water pump should be or not? Might be a stupid question, but I can argue with myself both ways why it might be needed or not.

Nope, no need for the factory plate. But make sure you use the correct gasket (if you use one) when putting the water pump block off plate on, use the gasket that goes between the factory plate and the timing cover. Not the gasket that goes between the WP and the factory plate.
I think I'm right about the gaskets , maybe someone else can confirm. I do remember that one of them seals all the way around the water passages (correct) and the other one is just the outer edge (wrong). :-\

Sounds good Proppy, twas leaning that way, but thought the plate might actually direct some water into the jacket. Again, me over thinking things........
Time to lay off the engine and keep drinking beer, or lay off the beer and keep on the engine............... such a Quagmire!

No plate like Proppy said but I do recommend you pack silicone around the open casting where the dip stick tube passes thru Tom

OK, now I MAY have had too much beer, Tom, but my dipstick tube goes into the block. Not being familiar with BBF's, there is nowhere on my timing cover for a dipstick tube.

Ray a significant portion of BBFs have a DS tube that passes thru the Timing cover just behind the water pump mounting machined surface, some (Vans I belive) are "minus this" when the tube passes thru the aluminum casting it passes in an area that we always seal for security's sake
Look between the upper two cover bolts on the right of the motor (left in the pic ) ..

Tom, can always count on you. So seal the tube to the outlet fittting on the cover?

Here's a better pic of what Toms talking about, you can see the dipstick tube as it passes through the timing cover (just above the water passage), a water leak there can give you milkshake oil. But if yours dosnt have the tube there dont wory about it. ;)

ooook, Don't have anything close to even similar looking to that. Means I have a Crate block or it's an original 69-71 engine, GREAT!.
Now I gotta find a dipstick, and I dun mean my brother, lol

HA HA polyester !! Like a Hobo on a hot dog , or a fat kid on cake or ............. way to Go Proppy since my Data base is running on "E" I'll depend on you top "spot me some pics" from time to time !!
