Title: 75 Spectra 19

So I guess I should start an official build thread of this Spectra I picked up a little while ago. Keep in mind I'm no professional and I do this on my free time with a limited budget so this may be a long build. My plan with the boat is to get it cleaned up build aI'll motor and pump and get it put together so I can enjoy it for a few seasons or more. Then maybe when I have some more money saved I can plan new paint jobs, built pump, and a crazy motor and so on.
Here's the float. Seems to be in decent shape with some cracks in the paint but I'm not to worried about them.

Got anew engine from my neighboor for free! 454 from a 74 to 85 truck from what the casting numbers say.

Started tearing it apart. It has 781 casting heads wich from what I've looked up are same specs as 049s. Gonna send them out and have bigger valves put in. I'm going with all new valve train as the original cam had some major wear. Was a hydraulic fletcher tapper. Going hydraulic roller with a comp  extreme marine kit.  Already got the heads tore down and started taking the short block apart. For the most part it's in decent shape minus the cam. Cylinders look good. Nothing broken or excessively worn.

Got the timing cover off and dam is that chain sloppy Gonna try and get the cam out then turn it over and start checking out the bottom end. I just hope that crank, rods and journals are all in good shape.

I love 781 heads. They have a little more metal in them in full comparison of the 049.

That chain is redonculous.... Lol

Look into either a Torrington kit or a cam thrust washer for that block, chances are the thrust face on it is quite worn. A quality machinist can make the machining necessary for either.

Cloyes makes both the Torrington and the washer kits.

Ya I'm pretty stoked on the heads for being free. Once I get everything apart both heads and block are going to a machine shop to get checked out and determine where to go from there. Thanks for the info though.

Got the motor almost completely torn apart. Seems mostly in good shape

So tell me what you guys think here. All the rods and main caps have numbers punched on them. Is this factory or a sign someone has been in the bottom before. I do find it odd that the cam and timing chain are fucked, but the cylinders, pistons and bearings look good.

They are not stamped at the factory.

Someone's been in there before.

Doesn't really mean anything, chances are there was some bearing issues or something necessitating it being torn down and reassembled.

So haven't had much time to work on the boat. Been busy with a new job and have been jus wiped out by the time i get home but i did realize that i pulled a bone head move. I got so into tearing the motor apart and seeing if anything was reusable i totally failed to notice its a 2 bolt main not a 4 bolt like i thought   :banghead: So I'm in search of a 4 bolt short block now. Might use the merc block i have sitting at out river place. Not sure yet. Does any one have a decent unmolested 454 for cheap? If i get anything else done ill post up

Unless you're shooting for a 600+hp animal, there is nothing at all wrong with a two bolt 454.

We ran three engines in the whitewater boat, only one was a four bolt.

Build it right, stud the mains, align hone the mains and let her buck..

Your probably right, but the only reason i was using this block was because it was given to me for free. I am gonna use the heads that came on it but since i have a perfectly good gen VI block I'm just gonna use that instead i think. I'm not building a crazy motor right now but i don't know what i might want to do to it in the future. ;D

Finally got something done to the boat tonight. Wet sanded and buffed part of the bow to see how it would turn out. Not to bad considering how oxidized it was. Decided to just clean the boat up instead of re gel. Don't have the funds to drop a boat load of cash on new gel or paint. I'm jet boating on a budget! Or is that just normal jet boating
Other reason is I really like the design and colors that are on there now. I can live with some faded spots and stress cracks for now.

I tried hitting it with some compounds first but it was just to far gone. Even with the wet sanding there is still some spots that are a little rough.

What products did you use? I'm about to polish and wax my boat but I'd rather not do it twice since I'm trying out a new product I'm not sure will work ha! Whatever you did let it is great!

Just picked some stuff up from the local detail supply store. Probably could have used something rougher to start with. I still might go get some aggressive compound and try it out. Wet sanding definitely made the biggest difference.

I used aqua buff 1000 and 2000 then a 3m cleaner wax. Worked very well on my original gel

Does anyone know how thick a spectra transom is normally. There's no wood in mine and it's maybe a little over a 1/4 inch.

Yeah, but all but about 3/16" of that 2" is wet rotted wood...    ::)
