Title: 76 brendella first weekend out
Post by: che77y on June 14, 2015, 03:52:21 PM
So I finished up the boat it took 6 mnths roughly and the engine runs great! There's some slop in the steering it feels like I guess I can adjust that out?  2 it's a 455 .030 over comp cam 290 and over the transom logs 's' pipe anyway I had 61 mph on gps and I was turning 4k I believe it's an A impeller.  Does this sound right?

Without knowing the condition of the bottom, water, pump, rigging, how the boat was loaded or what it was loaded with, that's not a bad number.

A better indicator would be running the motor till it falls on its face.
But he didn't do that and the Olds held together,  so that's a feat in its self.

Not that the Olds will like it,  but you need more rpm.
Unless the boat is doing exactly what you need,  then I'd say your doing just fine.

What carburetor do you have on this deal?

You really need to be turning closer to 4,500 rpm. I feel you're lugging it down too hard. Unless of course your tachometer is wrong, then never mind.

Lol

That could be true it's an old hardin tach. I've got a 750 I just rebuilt and put the stock jet size for the carb number in the primary and secondary it's a double pumper w a 6.5 power valve. The timing is set where it seems to be loving the start  w out being to advanced and I've barely set the dwell but it runs very strong through out the entire rpm band. I did install a loader and trimmed it flush w the keel.

Dwell?

You have points?

Here's a short list.

I have not seen your boat, nor heard it run so "grain of salt" all of this that follows.

Convert to electronic ignition.
Replace the 6.5 PV with a 4.5
Get your timing assisted for top advance, base is irrelevant to a point.

The engine should be able to make 4,500 rpm without killing itself. Get a quality portable tach. to verify what you have.

Yes i have points. Ok bro will do. So you don't think it's the pump at this point that causing the limitations on rpms?
