I should have started this post a while ago.
I picked up my first jet boat a few months ago, 76 Hallett bubble deck, and found out real quick the true meaning of "B.O.A.T." . The BBF had a few locked up cylinders which has since been pulled and replaced with a "rebuilt?" that I found for cheap. The interior has been destroyed by the weather from sitting uncovered in the high desert for a few years, but the gel has lasted fairly well. Testing a few areas with some wet sanding and polsihing brings the original red flake on white base back out. This should be a pretty nice ride once complete, If you guys have any tips on this hull let me know.

if that gold oil pan is a milodon youu may want to think about a different pan

It looks to be stock just painted by the guy I bought it from, what issues would I find with the Milodon?

Nice thread Brandon, Ralph knows his stuff when it comes to Fords, I'm sure he'll go into some detail on the Milodon pan thing when he gets back on here.
From what I recall, they typically fit like crap and they have been known to reduce oil pressure.

I think I'm safe with the oil pan issue, pretty sure it's stock. The "new" engine was installed this weekend and looks like I'll have to add the same therm. block off plate due to the HEI clearence. Hope to have it plumbed next weekend and rewire after that, not in time for Tom Papp but there's always next year.

be verry carfull with that stock pan, i know the motor is installed and you want to make the tp deal but, i would put a jet boat pan on it first.
jets run in the 4-5k range sustained a car runs 1,500-3k rpm and you will beat that 5-6 quarts of oil up pretty fast, not to mention your pan is probably a front sump and not a rear

he makes good pans, for a decent price but tends to be on back order often.
The Milodon pans (on the BBF's mostly) have oil pressure drop issues at certain RPMs. theres a good thread here about it:

TPM was pretty impressive and motivated me to get some more done on the Hallett. Here is the engine installed and water lines going on, also put together a inlet valve and hose fitting for trailer runs/cleaning.

More progress this Sunday, removed interior and carpet to find a nasty glue residue which almost looks like mastic! Any suggestions for removing the remaining glue??? As soon as I can get the floor clean I will get carpet in and the next big step is to rebuild both seat frames.
Also, finished the fuel line fabrication with stainless hardlines from the fuel pump to the carb. The water lines are about finished, just waiting on a few fittings and I can check for leaks. Always open for ideas so let me know if I've overlooked anything.

Sarah would like to take credit for the hardlines, I think because she realized that if she didn't leave me alone for a day this stuff wouldn't get done!
As for the cable, I haven't measured what's on there but if it worked for you I'm sure it will go right on. I'll pull the old one off tomorrow and let you know, maybe I'll come see you this weekend and pick it up.

Not bustin' your......well.....Balls, but.
What bolts did you use for your drive line? They look like grade 5 bolts with no locking washers.....
For safety reasons, these should be grade 8 and have some lockwashers, just an observation, the project is looking badass and look forward to the progress....
Diggin' the fuel lines BTW :thumbup:
White gas works OK for removing carpet adhesive, but do it outdoors and be careful... ;)

Thanks for the heads up GT, I will definitely change everything to grade 8 before I'm done.
I was going to try Acetone on the adhesive, but it might take some sanding to knock it down.

I had the same thing with my boat ,it looked like construction adhesive, Home Depot or Lowes sell a product called Citristip its an environmentally friendly paint stripper that will not touch the fiberglass but it melted the glue then I just scraped it off it left just the bare fiberglass . It was easy to do with no fumes just smelled like oranges ;D

Does work well Gord! :thumbup: But i distrust anything as "environmentally safe" Agent Orange was supposed to be harmless, as was Sacarin......I could go on......They can make Pu$$y smell like an orange.......... in a nutshell, still use a mask! :thumbup:

hey haulsballs have the gray carpet fron lowes indoor outdoor its very flexable. also took my seats to AAA upolstery on 7th in victorville they did a great job and it was only like 400 bucks i will try to put a pic on here.

Checked out the Citristrip at Home Depot and it says not to use on fiberglass, I know it was recommended but is there any real issue with using it? Any other suggestions to remove the glue adhesive from fiberglass?
Started sanding most of the glue from the hull but there are still a few areas that need attention. Is there a specific resin I should use to recoat the hull after sanding?

got it in mine. it works... but probably going to upgrade to some decent marine grade carpet soon. i got one of those "remnant" rolls for like $40.

its not thick, you feel every bump, every seam, every crack, etc... so make sure you sand your floors smooth before putting down the carpet.

I used 3/8 marine foam and then put carpet on top of that....The stuff from home d has a shorter life than good marine grade. The fiber on the bottom is stronger (on marine) and will hold the carpet better. If your doing a quick job with minamal cost...use home d. If your redoing the whole interior and want it to last...use good marine grade.

im just worried that foam gives water a place to sit. id love to have a ncie comfy soft floor but not if it means im gonna have a giant sponge underneath my carpet. curious if foam is the norm on most boats.

Marine white foam will not absorb water.....It only comes thin. I used it on my floor, sides of my seats, hatch cover and carb scoop. All these were covered with vinyl or carpet. My floor has been soaked, washed and spilled on with no effect on it. You do want to make sure all wood has been treated and given time to dry before installing.

So, one thing leads to another and I find my seat frames in need of attention before they could be recovered. I broke down the old frames for the patterns, then began tracing and cutting. Here is the progress, just about ready to be glassed up. Hopefully they will be off to Martinez Marine next weekend, wiring is next.

I was trying to keep it as original as possible without spending a ton. Martinez Marine Interiors is down the road from me and they say they can do the old "checker" stitch or even "diamond" stitch, so I'll be taking it to them.
How's your interior? Any luck with the tank repairs?

This is how my interior is on my hallett( this is before when the 455 olds was in it). and im looking for some alum tanks that will fit. just no luck yet.

I was thinking about tuck and roll but for a lil more $ I can get the original style interior put back in. I like the bimini, after I get this thing running I'll be investing in one of those.

Here's an update.
All seat frames and and engine cover are about ready for upholstery, just coated with resin and and added some woven cloth where needed. Got started on the wiring and pretty much have the dash complete, added a fuse panel to the mix for the added insurance. I pulled the bowl off my pump last weekend and found it in need of some attention, not sure if I need to pull the imp but the bowl seal and bearings will have to go.
There are a few issues on the hull that I could use some advice on. The previous owner thought it would be good to secure the bilge to the hull with two sheet metal screws.?????? This now leaves me with two holes the go straight through the floor that are about 1/8th to 3/16ths in dia., what's the best way to fix? I have read around here that slamming a hardwood dowl coated with resin fixes any holes in stringers but what about through the hull itself? I'm getting down to the small stuff but they seem to be some of the most important, any help would be great.

Just in case you were wondering, this is why there is a "new" engine in the boat. I took off one head after I realized that a long breaker bar was not turning this thing over, I found lucky cylinder #4 took it on this one. I still haven't taken the other head off but I don't think I will be surprised from I have found so far. Anyone need an anchor?

The interior is done! I took my seat frames into Martinez last Sat. and they turned them around in a week, pretty quick service considering the pattern and labor involved. I was originally told 3-4 weeks before they would even be able to touch them so I'm glad to have them back so soon. Carpet is also in with just a few areas to complete and maybe tomorrow we can have it ready to fire(weather permitting). The list of "to do's" is getting smaller, hope to be floating soon.

I really dig the waffles too, I haven't seen very many boats with this pattern( only one that I know of has this pattern and it's another Hallett) which is pretty unique. There is an old Hallett ad out there that has a similar model with this pattern on the seats so I guess it would be the "original look".

This is what had originally been in the boat and it was different so I kept it. Just try'n to stay nostalgic and diamond stitching is common enough that I didn't want to blend in.

cool. def looks unique. kinda modernizes the jetboat side seats a little bit. which is hard to do since they're round and all teh modern looking interiors are edgy.

Mines the only one I'm aware of around these parts with diamond stitching, but you'rs is DEFINATELY different! Can't stop looking at it..........getting impure thoughts now on my big boat........ :o

Martinez Marine Interiors in Corona CA., they do a lot of interiors from the ground up and everything they do looks really good. I took them one of the original seats and had them copy the pattern, I know there are probably plenty of shops around East LA that still do 70's style upholstery in cars but very few boat shops. Every shop I called wanted to square off my seats and change the benchs but these guys said no problem when I showed them the plan.

The pump is out and on the work bench. I took a shot at removing the impellor nut and no luck, that thing was on the solid. So I used heat next and still nothing, even with a huge breaker bar and 3/4 drive socket. I had no choice but to do a little surgery and you can see the result, Winning! Now to figure out how to pull the imp. with out killing it. Does anyone local have the imp puller I can borrow or ideas on how to make one?

I soaked it in WD40 for the past few days and was able to pull it with my 2 jaw. Looks like the I'm in need of an impellor, mine has some issues with the casting that I'm sure is not normal. I'll post pics of it to get other opinions.

So the pump is torn down and my rebuild kit came today so looks like that's the last major component to go through and it will be river time! Glad to get a new imp with this thing cause the old one wasn't going to last very long the way it was.

Alternator is in and just need to do a little clean up on the mounts. Everything is wired and ready to fire, hope to run the cam in and set timing this weekend.

Finally got the wet sanding and polish done this weekend and here are a few shots, hard to believe that this is the same boat that I brought home. The flake and gel came back great and it sparkles in the sun now like it should, just need to finish the pump and get it to the water.

Thanks, just about everything has been replaced by now and it's been a solid boat. I'm sure you'll dig your's once all the bugs are worked out, you have a great hull to work with.
