So you want to set your pump back and seal up the clean out cover?
I would just reset the intake unless your planning on big MPH numbers.
6" set back seems to be about where the clean out is on the outside of the boat.
Welding it will probably warp the housing causing alignment issues with the shaft.
If the clean out is on the outside i'd leave it functional.
Part of "plus" to having the clean out on the outside would be that you can actually use the clean out cover while in the water and not have to worry about water flooding the boat and still be able to get whatever is in your pump, out.

I think I understand what your saying (even without pics). Your transom plates are running over the top of the clean out cover, right ? Ive seen pics of a few guys that made a curved piece for the transom plates that goes around the inside of the clean out (kinda like half a can). That way the cover can still be removed. I think this is a common issue with the gullwing boats.

thanks for yeralls input, and I think the solution is to machine the cleanout cap down 3/16" and weld a peice of sheet aluminum to the cap. I spoke with JBP Tom and he seemed to think there is nothing wrong with this method. The pic of an inset box fabbed to allow the cleanout to still be functional in my case is a little beyond the skilz of a homebuilder, but supersweet at the same time. I Emaild Ray Black regarding you guys sending pithy sarcastic responces SO BRING IT ! Im pretty sure Ray's screen name is IRREBEL.
