Hey guys! im new to the site but ive been looking around it for the past few months and checking out the videos. i just picked up my first boat and am excited to have a project. its an 82 eliminator sprint less motor and seems to be in decent shape. it has a berkeley jg pump (split bowl i believe) that is set back 3 1/2" and just the standard nozzle, it also came with a semi pro open center loader. id like to pick up a droop snoot and hydraulic place diverter for it. the pump is complete parts wise but not together so any advice on where i can get the pump put back together or who can show me because i have no experience with them and want it done right. the hull is in ok shape, theres a couple stress cracks on the bow and it could definitely use a good buff but im thinking about having a buddy of mine paint it and help me freshen up the supports and little fiberglass stuff inside. i got some parts with the boat like motor mounts for a bbc, an alternator, starter, rewarder headers, gas pedal and a few other misc parts. as far as a motor goes i think im going to find a 2-3k dollar donor boat with a complete 454 or bigger and using what ever i can from it and sell whats left over. i just got the boat about a week ago so first on the agenda is getting the pump back together and the hole around the pump taken care of, the guy i got it from had some 1/4" aluminum he cut out for it but it will block off the clean out and im not sure if thats a good idea or not. any advice, tips constructive criticism or help would be greatly appreciated. my goal is to have it ready for next summer and get it on the river and meet some of you guys!
Thanks Ryan

nice find.id put a pump brace on it since these boat are only 1/4 inch layups and no wood transoms.the pump is set back and from the looks of the pics the botton part of the rear of the boat is gone due to the set back.just a safety percausion
-
nice project. Welcome to SCJB. I would agree with JustElectric and the pump brace idea. I never put one in my Daytona and it is a super light lay up. The pump is also set back and I can see where the bottom of the boat is starting to crack a little bit.

good deal. ill definitely look into that. is that a fairly common item you can buy or more of a custom fab thing? i have a buddy who has a plasma table but hes in vegas... you guys know anyone in the IE who could fab one up and maybe the cover around the pump?
and you guys are referring to something like this?
-
that's it. It doesn't need to get that fancy around the bottom of the intake though. If you are going to move your motor forward, putting the brace on the front intake bolts is the best spot ( there is more leverage there) but your intake bolts need to be long enough. They are installed from the bottom. If they are already to short, don't take them out, just run a brace like you have pictured

Looks like your Sprint has the narrow stringers---1x instead of 2x material-- That is pretty rare. I suspect the pump setback may be factory as the only other narrow-stringer Sprint I know of also had a factory setback. That boat is owned by Jim DeBoard who posts as Howler439 over on Performance Boats. You might want to contact him and compare notes.
Could we get a pick of the transom just below the pump as well as a shot of the bottom going forward from transom.

i agree I tried to get ahold of jim his sprint hauls the mail I wanted to pick his brain a little but all I got is his pump was set back 3 inches and that was it

Interesting. Yeah ill try to get some pics of that up tomorrow and you can tell me what you think. The guy i got the boat from told me he did some of the work himself but had the pump set back professionally. Honestly who knows... people tell all kinds of storys. And weather or not it actually was a factory setback, is that something i would be able to contact eliminator and find out?
-
Take some pics of your suction housing from under the boat and loader grate quorums to see the set up on it. These boats don't like that much hardware thrown at em and you can get them to run fairly dry with some easy mods. I got mine pretty close to where I want it to ride at the big end just need to ad some more hp to my equation.

Hope this is what you were looking for. Did the best i could... and a few shots of the loader ive got for it.
-
Nice it's set up for a ride plate but no shoes that's probably why your older isn't cut back so it bites harder to load the pump. I'm running a similar loader myself but cut it down so it's at the keel height I want.

Good deal. Like i said this is my first boat, so if you see anything that doesnt look right dont be afraid to point it out. But the more you guys like it the better i feel about it cauz this is the way i got it. Probably gonna start in on it next week.
-
Be sure you have someone knowledgable look at the loader before you run it. It will more than likely need to be cut down for the boat to run and shut down correctly. Ask me how I know. ha ha...
Nick @ Madskills will fabricate some nice pieces for you !!!
There are some very informed guys on this site regarding that specific type of hull and a few shops in the So Cal area that can help.
In no particular order !!!!!

Well I'm gonna pipe in as a fellow sprint owner and say don't paint it. I bought my boat complete but gel was in very similar condition, do some research and try to wet sand/polish it, original is always better if feasible. I spent three weeks wet sanding/polishing mine and gonna cap it this winter, gotta keep up with the joneses or at least JE:). It's an awesome hull and will haul a$$ with a decent mill

I hear you on the gel coat.. but if you look at the 5th pic down on my original post on the left side of the boat near the fuel cap theres a section there thats been painted. Its only where the silver is but its about 3-4 ft long. and then on the side of the boat(same area just the bottom side of the rub rail) but that section is only about 2 ft long and is again only in the silver. So im interested to see when i sand that off what is under there. Plus the underside of the boat is also painted which is not really noticeable. And your paint scheme is slightly more attractive lol. But i probably will try to sand/buff it to see how it comes out before i throw the money at paint. Plus paint is last on the long list of things i need to do. Glad to hear they run good also. It really didnt seem like there was alot of sprints out there when i was kind of researching but now all your guys are coming out of the woodwork!
-
I'm lookin at your pics on my phone so not very detailed, but looks like an original gel but who knows I guess. Look at my build thread in the projects section and then you can see what I had to do, 7 solid months of hard work but it's worth it. The first season you'll chase the fine tuning stuff as I have done but it's a labor of love👍

I'd try to buff and cut it to see if you can bring back to life before throwing money at it. You'd be surprised what a difference it makes and use the money towards your mill and set up where the money counts. Looks to me no spider package and skinny stringers in it so with that said someone tried to shed Wieght for a race app on the boat. I'm sure you will decide what your best interest is and go from there but you have a nice piece for a starting point. I'm vpurios to see what it weighs I know how heavy might boat is and most sprints are pretty light to begin with according to Greg shoemaker who laid most of them up

-
Yeah i think ill cut and buff it like you guys are saying and see how it turns out before i throw and money at paint. Im gonna start on the jet next week and get that together, i also have a ride plate for it but i have to drill tap the bowl to install it, and then get the aluminum work around the pump done and get a pump brace made. There will be plenty of progress pics. I also noticed the boat has a boost gauge so someone had a blower motor in it at one point. I wish i could put another one in it but as of right now i dont have an extra 10-15k lying around to buy a motor. And the boat is incredibly light from what i can tell, what is the spider package you guys are talking about? does your boat have it and do you have any pics?
-
Sean's (allfiredup) gel on his sprint was pretty bad when we went to pick it up. It has been sitting outside under a canvas cover untouched for 6-7 years only miles from the ocean. I thought it would never shine again but Sean proved me wrong. Its absolutely beautiful now.

mine wasn't as faded but I used 1000 then 2000 and finished up with 3000 all Wet then machine buff
-
Yeah that thing definitely turned out beautiful man.
-
It was a learning process for sure, I wet sanded the whole boat first. I dont remember the grit I used but it was the finest one, then I used hard turtle wax compound and then mild meguiars compound then polish several times and wax, and yes, ALL by hand. It was not fun but in the end was worth it. Plan is to get it capped this winter :)

Got a little done in the last two days. Had someone knowledgable check out the pump and said everything looks good. Theres some work done to the impeller and bowl. Had a fresh wear ring and impeller looked good. Getting it painted and put back together. Pulled all the wireing, carpet and got one gas tank out. There was glass all over both of them and they looked like crap from having carpet glued to them so i wanted to get them out and cleaned up. More to come.
-
pretty crazy with the small stringers it didnt have the spider package(parke floors) and no bulk heads for the tanks it must have been a special order unless someone bought it bare and rigged it themselves.i bet it was a old race boat of some sort id do some homework and see what the original owner di with it might be a cool piece

Just Electric i was wondering what kind of glass you used when you capped your boat? like short strand or did you just cut the glass up in a cup and mix with resin and stuff in there? just trying to get an idea. and if you get a chance can you take a few pictures of your trailer for me because i dont think the bunks are in the right spot especially since its not the original trailer  and i want to have a better idea so i can possibly find a nicer boxed one and then sell the one i have.
-
The cap was done with mutiple layers of mat and glass then ground down to shape. The drivers side towards the rear on these thing are outta wack so your gonna have to tool it/shape it to the desired look or you will notice it in the cap job
Here's a pic of my trailer but you can always cut off the risers Znd have a local shop weld them on to the right width between your strakes of the bottom of the boat

Went and picked up the pump from getting powder coated and printed today. Pretty pleased with the result   Still need to get the place diverter powder coated to match but that will have to be another trip. Gonna be diving head first into the hull in the next few weeks on a few repairs trying to get that all dialed in.

Finally got the heart of the beast! 454 4 bolt main, 405 hp with good rods and forged pistons. Don't have a ton of money to beef her up right away but i think its a hell of a good starting point. I already have some Rewarder headers but they're kind of gummed up from some repair work near the weep holes and this motor came with some decent bassets that are in pretty good shape but need to be re-coated. Gonna clean it up and throw some gaskets and a little paint and rebuild the carb. Still have a ton of work to do to the hull though and then get all the rigging done and throw her in one of these days.[attachimg=1]
-
Made a little progress today. Removed the dried out side supports and the piece that seperates the bilge and cleaned up the rough stuff left behind. Still more prep before i install the new wood.

more

Got a few updates. Picked up my headers from Embee and they look amazing, they did a great job. Price was 250 plus tax so 270 even out the door! And while i was down in the area i picked up a round keel berkeley intake from sam(19ftcheyenne) and took it over to B1racing to have it machined for a shoe and ride plate and one shim to start. I also talked to chris and im probably gonna have him order me a new droop snoot. Since i posted last i picked up a weiand team g intake, some scorpion roller rockers and im also gonna put in a new cam. Ill post up specs when i know what im gonna go with. Then whenever i have time ive been doing alot of glasswork but im finally moving forward instead of removing someone elses shotty ass work. Oh and i also picked up a nice trimetric stringer mount pedal from a guy off of the other boat site but waiting for that to come in the mail.

Thanks guys, and it's definitely getting a rail kit. I just picked up a nice flywheel cover and then I'll have to get some motor plates built. Still a little ways away from that though haha!
-
Ya, I do, the pics were taken mid project so it wasn't installed yet, I put a 1 wire 100a powermaster on it, we fabricated pretty much everything out of 6061 including the alternator mount, the only thing that I ordered was the flywheel cover and mounting blocks.... It really cleaned everything up 👍

I wish I had more to say lol but my wife and I just bought a house, we closed escrow on April 10, so I was pretty wrapped up with that for the last couple months. However I did make it down to B1 last week to pick up my intake, a new full droop, and a bunch. Of diverter parts I had powder coated. I also just picked up those fiberglass buckets and bench. Should be getting on back on track after memorial. Will post some pics soon.
-
Pulled her out of hibernation. Time to get back on track.
-
Here's the after pics. I plan on re installing the gunnel supports next weekend.
-
Took her to a fiberglass shop a couple weeks ago to have a new bulkhead/toe board put in, have him finish glassing the knee braces/ gunnel supports and glass in a new bilge dam. Ended up need new wood supports underneath the deck too. Should have it back in a week or two. Might figure out something with paint or just get it all prepped and in white primer for summer. Hopefully ill be able to get a rail kit in her soon and ive heard a lot of you guys say good things about bostick so i think ill be taking the motor to him sometime soon as well. If anyone would like to give me his number please send me a pm unless you dont mind posting it. Ill post some pics of the work when I get it back. I stopped by the shop today and saw he had already had the toe board cut out for it and it looked pretty good so im stoked.

Went past the point of no return today. Started prepping the top half of the boat for a layer of cloth. I ground down and glassed a couple cracks on the deck beforehand that way everything thing should be solid and the cloth should prevent anything from coming through again.

Making progress. Got the deck and whole top side roughed up. Going to pick up materials today and should be laying up the glass this weekend.

There were a few stress cracks on the deck. A couple that I pretty much sanded out and two that I had to repair. I'm gonna cover the whole thing with one layer of 6oz cloth and that will prevent them from coming through again. I was told if you do not do this its pretty much a guarantee they will come back.

honestly I do not think that will work the best way to fix them is to grind them out and fill them with kitty hair and resin
-
There were really only two that were deep and I ground them down and filled them with mat and resin which should be more than enough. The others were very minor.
