91 Canyon tunnel jet

Finally got this home from Pico Rivera yesterday, so let the restoration begin. Not a lot known about this as the seller wasn't a boater and it was given to him. What I DO know is BBC (unknown displacement), MSD, dual double pumper tunnel ram, Berk with a wedge and diverter. The hull is pristine with no gel chips anywhere, just a couple stress cracks in the deck. It seems like a medium layup, so it's not a potato chip hull. The balsa floor needs a REALLY good buffing, and I'm hoping to b ring the vinyl back so it's reasonably presentable.
Last registration was 1995, so obviously the fuel system will be blown apart and cleaned/rebuilt.
First up, wash, buff and scrub the vinyl......

Spent the day cleaning and getting to know this boat. Nothing earth shattering, but it's odd how there's just NO wear on this boat. It's like it was used from 91 to 95 (last year it was registered) and then just put away. There's a ton of polishing to do since the nozzle, diverter, bowl, tunnel ram, valve covers and billet engine brackets were all polished.
Pulled a valve cover and found a stock valve train on 990 heads, and doesn't look like it's ever been run!Looked up the list#'s and it has 750 dp Holleys on it that'll need to be freshened.
Ordered all new cables tonight, with carb kits and fittings to be ordered this week.

Looks like the last one that did the heads sprayed them with Glyptol (the red paint). Looked at the pushrods and there's absolutely NO scuffing from the guide plates either. The fuels tanks don't smell sour, but they'll be coming out and cleaned when the lines are replaced/replumbed.

Rant and a question. What EVER made mounting an MSD box under the drain holes on the headers a good idea? Pulled it yesterday (and the spiffy bracket they made) so I can relocate it, but now the question is WHERE. First issue is I don't have a splash guard (yet), but thinking mounting it under the gunnel will keep it nice and dry. It would be EASIER to mount it to the top of the bellhousing below the electrical panel, but without a splash guard, that's a disaster waiting to happen.
Anyone have a good idea on where to mount it and maybe have some pics?

I mounted mine on the transom as high as I could under the gunnel.

Here's my thought about mounting the control box. I like the idea of mounting it on the inside of the transom under the gunnel, it's just HOW. I'm thinking glassing this bracket (won't use the Dzus fasteners) to the inside of the transom, use isolators to mount the control box to the bracket, then re-wire and extend the wires as needed. The alternative would be to screw the bracket to the transom wood, but I don't like the long term prospects of that holding up.

Did this on a Rogers. A terminal strip mounts horizontally across the bottom, just above the stringer and relays mount vertically on the front. Not really a fan of mounting things to the transom unless it can be tied into the through-bolts holding transom plates and/or swim steps. Vibration always causes it to work loose.

Interesting idea. I don't know that I'd be comfortable mounting it that low with as little freeboard as this has, but something to consider.

Got home from work and started playing. I don't really need ready access to to the controller, so started looking around for wasted space (and a way to mount it). First pic is where it WAS mounted, and anybody that has OT headers knows why this was a REALLY bad idea.
I got lucky that there are (what I call out of ignorance) blast plate brackets bolted through the transom and the bolt spacing was real close to the width of the controller. The only material I had available to play with was steel plate, so I don't know if this will be the finished piece or just a proof of concept. Either way, it tucks in real nice behind the battery, is well sheltered from water, I can still get to to limiter chip (6,000 in there now), and I can re-wire it neatly.

I'll be starting to bring the engine back to life this weekend and am going to go sloooooowwwww. Fog the cylinders, change the oil and filters, pull the valve covers, pull the distributor and circulate oil with a oil pump primer. I'll be checking for oil at the rockers, inspect the springs and seals and pour some oil over over the springs before bolting the covers back on. Disconnect the driveline, pull the plugs and (hopefully) spin it over with the plugs out. The fuel system won't be rebuilt for a few weeks, so I won't be lighting it off, but want to make sure there aren't any rude noises or other issues first.
Baby steps.... it's been 20 years since it's been alive.......

It's a good night. Replaced the 3 position ignition switch with a 4 position (didn't get a key with it) tonight. Took care of something that bugs the crap out of me.... not being able to check the gauges or run the bilge pumps without powering the ignition. Why they added a separate switch for the tach I don't know, but whatever. Put a battery in it to check out what I can and everything (so far) is good. All gauges respond, all 3 bilge pumps come on, but I'll test the MSD tomorrow night, and the alternator later when I fire it.

Nice find! Not sure what you're used to polishing with but I'm a huge fan of this stuff. It's a chemical based product and will cut your polishing time down tremendously.
