Title: Another new guy!
Post by: jru73 on June 10, 2009, 10:01:59 PM
Whats up everyone! Awesome site, lots of info for a first timer. Picked up this 78 Challenger awhile back. So busy at work thease days I've only worked on it a couple of weekends so far. I know the first thing to do here is post pics, here it goes (fingers crossed)

Good looking hull.

Do you know if the jet was set back or is that original?  And if it was set back, why would somebody reinstall the Jacuzzi YJ?

If you plan on keeping that jet, you will want to talk to Tom at Jet Boat Performance about an Energizer kit for it.

Oh Yea, Welcome to SCJB  ;D

I'm guessing its the original,  I was asking myself the same thing. Here is a pic of the inside.

Huh. That looks a lot like the JE setup in the Moo, but with a Jacuzzi.

If you get a chance, can you take a pic of the bottom where the intake is? I'd like to see how the keel is shaped feeding into the gullet. Thanks!

That jet is a Jacuzzi YJ Golden Eagle, very common for that boat/hull.  They have the same internals as a standard YJ and also take the same energizer kit if desired, with one variation being a larger seal carrier and typically the steering cable has to be relocated higher in the hull.

Also unlike a Berkeley E pump these jets can be serviced with out removing the engine.  Unbolt the bearing cap, remover the snap ring from the thrust bearings exterior and the whole shaft assembly with bearing and all will slide out the back.

Here's a thread from feb 08 where we performed this energizer conversion, the boat is also a challenger
http://www.socaljetboats.com/index.php?topic=2799.0  its not a very comprehensive thread but it shows the end result.
