Project is the word, Start off with Thanks, People from this site already saved me a couple mistakes, Had a couple pieces of pressure treated lumber cut out and the boat was sitting on the trailer as i was replacing the floor, stringers and the side storage area divider's. Now It's all kiln dried fir and hanging on 3 points, Again Thanks for that information.
I Don't believe I have any hull flex going on for a few different reasons, Seems very stiff with it being kinda of a mod V with the step tec it has, When i cut the floor and stringers out there was no noticeable flex but the floor was rotted and the stringers soaked with rot on edges (pic's attached) and around engine mount holes, And i ran a straight edge and trying to see any buckles/ bows uneven crap and it looks alright to me? Very stiff, I have worked on other boats that are way weaker as in flexing, But i want more info on what to look for before i start epoxying in wood with West Marine Epoxy and the proper filler and hardeners (again thanks for that info) Question is. Is there any way I can check for sure this thing is straight enough to start sticking it together, OH Yeah, Another thing, I lengthened the stringers 5 inches to add room for any wider pulley I may want to incorporate down the road. ;D . But again this thing seems very stiff, When it was on the trailer yes it did seem like it could of slightly moves in on the side's, but when it's hanging it seems fine? Need more information/input to make me more confident tho? Any Idea's? Opinions?
OBTW, 454 that is at the machine shop engine builder. Berkeley 12JE with need of a diverter as soon as i get it in the water.

Another pic under the floor, It's the same as stock but with thicker wood and the main stringers being 5 inches longer.

has anyone else noticed that anywhere but cali, arizona, nevada....everyone else from other areas that post here all have huge shops to work out of?
i will love the day that i can even park my boat inside, or even in my driveway!

I bet it's gonna be a fun sled when it's done. Flex it will, but with all the river running you'll probably be doing, you won't notice it so much. These things will flex quite a bit! You can visibly see one of mine's engine shaking around at idle almost like it was on rubber mounts, and it's all in the 1/4 stringer hull.
Everyone has bigger garages back east Nordie! Can't keep stuff outside like we can either tho :thumbdown:

Thanks for all the thumbs up, Grinding it out was a pain but I figure the worse part is over Cause the fun is putting it back together and building it up, While thats what I keep telling myself..lol.
I should of asked my question better, I know this boat like all boats flex, If not it would be to brittle and crack at the weakest point , What I'm asking is does anyone think I need to block/ support any where from underneath supporting the stake/ chine or hull ? Or is just hanging it from the 3 point is enough? to hold it's proper shape? I left the front part of the floor from under the dash forward in tack and I believe that also is helping a lot with holding it's form, I'm probably worrying to much and just need to finish prepping and start sticking boards :screwy:.. Update: Been Grinding, pealing and sanding for 2 day's, Another day of it and it's ready for a wash down and glueing in sticks, I took all the support fiberglass that was holding down the stringers and other wood completely off because it was starting to lift, blister and peal off on it's own, I could of epoxied it back down but I figure when I hit some choppy water or cranking it up to speed I rather be confident then worried about it staying together.

Its hard to tell.. Is the whole boat the same color as the inside of the transom? now THATS metal flake! Love it! Projects lookin good, you have alot more patience than Ill ever have, thats for sure. :thumbup:

Yeah it's Metal flake all over, Hard to tell since it needs wet sanded badly but it shines and glitters and I can't wait to sand and buff it out should be a huge improvement that happens this week.
And you all know I HAD to do a test patch to see how it would look the first day I started on it. You can see it right beside the tow hook, just a little rubbed out patch, It's Silver color with Heavy Silver Metal Flake and with a little hint of red and black smaller flake mixed in, I Can't wait to do the whole boat, I'm like a kid before X-mas ;D ;D :)

Could not wait to wet sand, buff, polish and wax so I did, Just the top so far, Pics don't look as good as the job came out. Could not get rid or cover up all the sun damage on the hood but the rest of the boat looks a lot better then it did, After this season of working out the bug's and building up the pump I like to repaint the top/hood this winter. I'm not going to sweat over the cosmetics until i have the mechanics 100%.

Glued in some sticks today, I'll put fiberglass over them tomorrow.
West Marine epoxy works really well once I got use to the cure time and smoother less sticky texture then fiberglass resin. Those one pump to one pump pre-measured epoxy dispenser pumps are the bomb.
More pic's tomorrow. I have to get my ass in a higher gear cause the engine will be back from the builder in 2 weeks and I'm not near ready yet. Roy.

Started laying fiberglass on the subfloor today, Pretty easy.
QUESTION??? What's the pro's and con's and differences between Fiberglass Mat and Fiberglass Cloth?? The Cloth is easier to lay and I would tend to think it's stronger because of the even weave??
So why even use the Mat? West Marine book say's as long as you get the same thickness it does not matter. If this is true why not just do 1 or 2 layers of woven roving ?? :screwy:

Stuck my Stringers today, Fiberglass them in tomorrow Moving right along.
Anyone know the best way to cover them with fiberglass? Still wondering about mat and cloth??... Roy

The floor is down, Had to do a few layers of foam. My bestiest building Bud (Sandy) was there to help.
Stopped at the Machine Shop to check out the engine, Should be done in a week or 2, Carb, Dizzy is in and the intake cleaned up nice, Oil pan will be tight but will fit and the paint should match up nicely.
Today I cover the floor with Fiberglass matt and soon cover the stringers.. Blue Skies!!... Roy

:) :) I was amazed when I first saw how it came out myself. I know it was "Boiled and Blasted" but I don't know with exactly what I'll ask and post the answer in a few day's.
This boat/engine sat for 15 years in a field and was in bad shape and the engine needed so much machine work and new parts I just had a pro do the whole engine, There even doing a bench start break in to set the cam and rough basic initial tune. With me doing all the hull/floor and everything else if I also built the engine it would not be floating this summer. Roy

Wow... That intake difference is AMAZING! I tried a few things on mine but nothing really worked that good and never wanted to go with anything too harsh cause I was scared of pitting of somthing. Looks great though! :thumbup:

"The Guy's" called and said it was together and running so out the door I ran to hear my bad boy snort and that it did, I'm VERY Happy with it :) :thumbup: , Here's some pic's I'll work on some video so ya can hear it. Seeing and hearing it with them Zoomies makes me want them even more, Screw the neighbors I'm getting a pair for special occasions, Like Summer time and such 8) :)
The Intake and Valve covers where first boil bathed in detergent to get the oil/gas stains off it, They said it looked almost as bad coming out as going in But what really cleaned it up was blasting it with "Fresh Glass Beads", Any sand blaster will shoot it, There's is in the background pic of the 3 of us.
Well hearing it has given me a kick in the ass to get work done faster so off to the garage I go.. Blue Skies!!.. Roy

I hope I'm doing this right, I could not get a answer on how to fiberglass in these stringers as in what fiberglass material to use in what order So this is how I did it.
Used West Marine epoxy.
Fiberglass cloth down first
Fiberglass matt second
Fiberglass woven roving third
Another layer of Matt fourth
Another final layer of cloth makes Five layers.
All edges are staggered and feathered but it's hard to tell in the pic's.
I tried to duplicate how it looked like the stringers where put in from the factory but it was just to difficult to tell for sure.
Besides the Lady bug that got under the last layer of cloth and a dot of some kind of black stain that was already on the new Cloth It came out pretty good for my first one, I think. Roy.

The stock Nicson's log's and snails are being pressure tested today, Both logs have a small crack on the inside bottom but we think it's external only and will be fixed with a 2 inch bead, I hope so cause I don't wanna buy new atm, The engine sits very low and the transom/deck high so I'd need a tall angled set of headers to clear, Any idea's on what headers would work??.. Roy

Finished covering the last stringer and I need to start thinking and planning what to do with painting the transom and stringers, Any Idea's or Opinions?? Gel ? Rattle cans?? Smooth Bed liner epoxy paint?
Also Need to start working on engine mounting, I'm thinking about going with front and rear plates on rails, Any input ?? Best products?? Best prices??

UpDate: Finished installing/covering the shelfs that hold the gas tanks and batteries so that means now prep to paint, Decided to flip it and do the outside bottom now, Pic of bottom looks worse then it really is but it does need work. :banghead: but with this sites info Im 8)
Got the Engine home, was like a child hood Christmas Morning for me, I'm still grinning and happy ;D :)

Tom from JBP is instructing me in rebuilding the pump, looks like where going with a SS AA Impeller (Maybe cut smaller later) Bronze wear ring with a A.T bowl and a new Race Shaft with inducer cut but no inducer at first, Want to see the #'s before inducer, loader, and with larger impeller. Pics of the build will be posted in a couple weeks, working on making/saving cash for parts atm.
Tom also told me to fix the bottom with Seagoing Epoxy, So it will be done. But I now need to know what's the best paint to spray the bottom with over the epoxy, I want something strong for the beach landings but I don't want anything that will restrict speed #'s, Black/Silver or grey. What's most the people using these day's??? I hate calling/disturbing Tom for every step I take even tho he's great and A HUGE help I don't want to become a PITA so your help is appreciated. RR

Roy please never hesitate to call always a pleasureto talk and you sweetie is always a pleasure as well ,honestly we use a high quality engine or epoxy enamel for small repairs or in some cases speed coat works well too Tom

I guess I'll use the Speed Coat, Is there any tips on spraying this stuff, I want to paint the bottom of my boat from the water line down so I guess I'll spray gun it on and buy a couple cans for later touch ups. I also need some heavy duty Sea Going epoxy, Tom do you sell all this stuff? If not where should I get it and I also need to gelcoat/paint the engine compartment bilge area now that it's all redone any suggestions on what to use and where to get it?? Thanks Everyone.. Roy

It sure is a lot of work overhauling a boat from the stringers up.
I'm in the same boat (no pun intended) as you.
I need the weather to warm up a bit so I can glass my stringers in.

Bump for Tom, Here is my build page for my Baja if you need more info just ask and I'll post anything you need. What's the best paint/gelcoat to apply to the engine compartment people I need to start ordering materials.

Tom and Josh are fixing me up by rebuilding my pump and it's looking GREAT!! :thumbup: SS impeller & Inducer, 17-4 Race shaft, Dominator Hi-Flow split bowl,"E"- Loader, Blue Print and a power diverter to come later should help me up and out. ;D They even painted it for me to match the engine block. Got my bottom paint yesterday and I'll be spraying it as soon as it warms up, Temps in the teens here again tonight can't wait for the warm up starting tomorrow. I need to do stringers and floor on my Baja as well. What did you use for wood for the stringers. My Baja is a 190ES that has a siezed v-6 mercrusier in it. I am going to put a small block in it though. I hate working with anything to do with wood. Give me steel, aluminum or stainless any day.

I was told by people on this board to use untreated kiln dried fir so thats what I used, I did get furniture grade from a specialty wood supply store. It seemed to really take the West Marine epoxy well and also round and sand the edges that helps the strength and deters cracking and splitting.

Thanks for the info Roy. Also what size is the wood in post #13 first picture. Did you use 2 pieces of wood and epoxy them together ?

The long ones are just 2x4's but the short cross section middle pieces where just a tad to tall in the center for 2x6 so I had to cut 2x8's way down to size so I could epoxy all edges to the bottom of the boat and top edge to the plywood floor with no gap in the center bottom where there would of been a very slight gap if I used 2x6's, ALL this wood is bigger then what was there stock but since it was coming apart due to rot and stress and I knew I was more then doubling the horse power I beefed up everything...
