I found this beauty a few months ago sitting and rotting away in the desert heat....decided to go buy it today while i had to go chase parts in that neck of the woods. It was in no shape to be towed, so I'll be picking it up next friday after its made tow-able.
Its a early 70's (72 is my best bet) Rogers. (edit - turns out its a hallet!) Its unique in a few ways.....#1, it has a Jaccuzi.....#2, its recessed on the bottom for trim tabs/cav plates. Now someone just didnt grind away the bottom, you can see that from the inside of the boat, it was actually set up in the mold that way.
It's previous name was "High Voltage".......but this is going to be my new CompJet boat numbered 667 and appropriately named "More then Evil".
I got some interesting plans for this boat, so sit tight and watch this thread as it progresses.
(sorry for the crappy cell pics - my luck today left me with dead batteries in the digicam.)

its a nordic....rounded ass like a rogers....looks heavy....he was tryin to sell it to me as a nostalgia jet. :screwy:
theres a pretty decent white avenger next to that....looks identical to your old seguaro...bubble deck/notched in dash
hes also got a bahner there too....
damn guys got a yard full of decent boats and i was told the inside of the shop is stacked full of boats too.
-
I was wondering the same thing, the green one. Nice one Brad, get it done. Only 4 months to Parker
-
Nice find there Brad, dosen't look like you're going to have any spare time for the next few months. Are you going to have to bone out the Liberty to build the Rogers?
Now back to the shop full of hulls, you gotta scope that out for us when you pick up your Super Cyclone.

what up with the jacuzzi diverter? and handle?
The Beav
-
Ouch man, that thing needs some love.
And fast!
-
what up with the jacuzzi diverter? and handle?
The Beav
at this point, i dont know.
im going to tear into the jacuzzi and find out just whats in it and what work has been done to it.....might run it, might swap it out for a berk....time will tell.

Nice project Brad , I've always been able to look at a "project" like this and see past the "ruggedness" to envision the end result ,should make a really cool hot rod !! Nothing wrong with the Jacuzzi WJ ,just the bad name they have been given over the years . My "Project Miller" runs 80 with a Jacuzzi WJ "AA"+ impeller and 434 cu Stroker . Wjs were used in loads of production boats including Millers and Hondos . But if it comes down to it the WJ cut out is actually smaller the a Berk intake makin a swap "cake" Tom

thanks tom....and ive heard the same.
Roger Finney used to be associated with Jacuzzi back in the day and hes a firm believer of them and said if done right, they can out perform a berk. he just doesnt run them because of the availability of parts. I figure I would give this one a chance before I yank it. I will be picking Rogers brain.
I'm not here to prove anyone wrong or dominate the class with the jacuzzi, but it will be a fun learning experience. I have a 12jg i picked up recently that would swap into this boat easily, but whats the fun in that? i tend to like to do this too much --> :banghead:

OMG!!!! 2sav leaves the building and a couple more come in...WTF ;D
Nice project, it looks to be about 40 pages to finish :-*
J/K ;)
Where did you find them ???
Looks familiar...........

just to clarify....this is an additional boat, not a replacement boat
the liberty will be retired from racing (for several reasons) to be my play boat for the river. i love the liberty and dont see myself getting rid of it.
this rogers will be strictly for racing.
the liberty wont be scrapped for parts....i've been collecting parts to build a second boat.
-
Can you have it done by february? Louie Schindler just called me from the kilos, said he just talked to Anne Hoban and she said the permitts were getting done for the race in Havasu. She was asking about the comp jets. He is supposed to call me back later today to get some definite info.

i seriously doubt it.....though i have built boats in much shorter periods of time, i dont plan on rushing this one. if anything maybe the liberty would make that tour. we'll see.

Hey Brad, been trying to get my head around the name...More Then Evil, not More Than Evil? Care to help me out?

That my boy is a Hallett. Good score.
-
so the reason ive concluded this boat is a hallett is because of the double headed eagle crest on the bow....then the sticker i found on the trailer with the same crest....boat maufacturer starts with an "H"...other then hondo, hallett is the only other name i can think of.
Chromey's buddy has a green hallet JUST like this one....has the mountain dew logo on the bow but says "Mountain Duck" ...has a huge blown motor in it.
so, does anyone know if anyone back in the day circle raced one of these with any success? I know its a decent boat, but just dont know if im wasting my time making it my strictly circle racer.
-
Just my opinion, which means shit btw, I don't like the bottom on that boat, at least not for a circle boat. There is hardly any rocker in it, rocker helps you turn, circle boats turn a lot, that's my conclusion.
Love
Me
-
Brad, Are you sure that's a Hallett? I only ask because it looks exactly like my Eliminator (minus the plywood floors) , even my cav plates were like that (angled on the inside) before Busby and Tom Papp got ahold of it. Did you check to see if it has rocker ? I want to see a side profile shot (to see the angle of the entry)
-
OK, I found some info on that sticker. I believe it said Hustler.
Quote,
Lee Taylor, a Californian boat racer, had first tried for the record in April 1964. His boat Hustler was similar in design to Bluebird K7, being a jet hydroplane. During a test run on Lake Havasu Taylor was unable to shut down the jet and crashed into the lakeside at over 100mph. Hustler was wrecked and Taylor was severely injured. He spent the following years recuperating, and rebuilding his boat. On June 30, 1967 on Lake Guntersville, Taylor and Hustler tried for the record, but the wake of some spectator’s boats disturbed the water, forcing Taylor to slow down his second run, and he came up 2 mph (3 km/h) short. He tried again later the same day and succeeded in setting a new record of 285.21 mph (459.00 km/h).
Look at 1967
http://www.speedace.info/water_speed_record_history.htm
And I still think that boat is an Eliminator. ;)
-
nah...everything points to that its a hallet....i do see the similarities with the eliminator though.
the sticker is a hallet sticker.....look at the logo on this ad....plus it matches up with the double headed eagle on the bow.
[attachimg=1]
....and then Tom @ JBP found this hallet for sale which is spitting image identical (thanks tom!)

[attachimg=2]
[attachimg=3]
[attachimg=4]
then chromey's buddy has this boat (taken at the NJBA Irvine Lake Fund Raiser)....and he says his title lists it as a '73 hallet and had hallet badges on it when he bought it.

Verry cool Brad, I guess Hallett had a hand in building the Lee Taylor "Hustler" boat. I love this history stuff.
I also remembered Greg Shoemakers coments about my boat (and the Hallett) over on the other site (post #9) http://www.performanceboats.com/html/forums/showthread.php?t=12289&highlight=eliminator+sprint , these things look so similar (Hallett and Eliminator) that there had to be some splish splashing going on. The only difference I can see is the placement of the fuel fillers.
-
I would go with Hallet, The bird for the crest and the sticker also says Irwindale, calif same as the location on the bottom of the flyer.
-
buy some sandpaper and lets get down!!
-
Brad...Can't think of any Hallets racing in sprint boats during my time at least . They were mostly used in the longer races. That same hull with a v-drive made a great GN boat. I remember they were hell-for-stout strongest (and heaviest) boats in the water but that's what marathon boat were suppose to be. Before you go out and spend an ungodly amount of money to make it a Comp Jet weigh it first. 850 lbs. may make it too heavy to be competitive. Other than that they are a good boat.
-
the plan at this point (whenever i get around to it) is to rig it roughly and throw a motor in it....dont pay any attention to the cosmetics.....just to see how she handles, turns, etc.....and if it proves worthy, then move forward with it....if not, it will still get the cosmetic treatment and be a play boat
-
i decided to kick this project in the butt today....got sick of looking at it with all the shit in it....so i cleaned her up.

-
Stickin with the Jacuzzi eh? 8)
-
dont know what im going to do yet for the pump....either keep it or swap it for a berk.
i was hoping there might be some goodies inside the jaccuzi, but its just the normal shit....aluminum impeller and lots of spiders.
-
B-rad, can you get a couple pics of the intake grate. From what I can see in the pic that shows the grate, it looks like mine has been modified.
