I was going to keep this under wraps, but decided to make a project thread about it.
Its now past mid October and about 5 or so weeks until the next race that takes place Thanksgiving weekend in Parker. Now the divorce is final and I can move on with my life, its time to kick this project in the ass. I packaged up the pump and intake tonight. Pump is getting blue printed with new hardware and the intake is being machined for shoe/ride plate.
I am still pulling out the balsa floors in the rear 1/4 of the boat. I also am going to remove the bulkheads and gunnel supports. Basically all the wood besides the stringers is coming out and being replaced. All holes are going to be filled. The dash is going to be redone and setup for center steer. I think I will be ready for glass work sometime next week. John (Brendella Pickle) is going to help me with that.
Also, I am contemplating a new paint job. I think I can slap some new paint on there over a 2 day weekend easily. We have Chromey's Concepts to assist with that.
New motor plates have been designed and sent off to Ironman to have water jetted.
Once we get the glass and paint done, and set the intake (2 weeks max)...the rest will be cake.
Anyone in the vegas area that can lend a hand would be greatly appreciated. Time is not on my side, but Ralph and I have done this with less time on our side. It can be done.

Sounds to me like a lot of work in a very short period of time.... :screwy:
I would leave and touch up the paint for now and get her dialed in before spending the time to prep and paint... ;)
I like to see quality, not quantity...........Just don't want to see this become a "Machine Gun" type project...Wish I were closer, would love to help. :-\

got the rest of the balsa out tonight. what a fockin mess. amazing how soggy the shit still is even through i live in a low humidity environment and it hasnt seen water in 11 months.

yeah, im itching bad. at least i was smart enough to use a respirator this time.
finished the intake area...now just have to do the passanger side. im out of sand paper and burnt out. ill pick it back up in the morning.

make sure to rough everything you intend to stick glass to with a minimum of 36 grit sand paper then cleen with acatone before laying glass/resin

X2 but clean with MEK..... :thumbup:
Acetone is a good solvent, but dries/evaporates too damn fast to do a good job, the toweling dry process is what really cleans, not the solvent action... :thumbup:

Gives you plenty of working time and not as combustible....Evaporates more slowly and gives you a chance to "wipe dry" doing more actual cleaning... :thumbup: :thumbup:

Yes, HD sells MEK. Yes, I agree with Glenn it works much better than Acetone. Not only less toxic, but lets you hit the areas with a scrub brush, THEN wipe it up. Learning all this fiberglass work myself, and my Paint Manager put me onto this method..........he's a boater, but not to the extreme the rest of us are! :thumbup:
I'll post pics of his Eliminator one of these days. Not a jet, but a bad ass boat none the less! :thumbup:

Even though the old balsa core looked great when new, it also added sigificant stiffness to the hull with very little weight penalty given the layup schedule that Liberty used. With that all out now the hull is actually very thin. Are you ging to a core material between glass or just adding abunch of glass?

I am just laying down a few layers of cloth in the rear 1/4 where the balsa was.

I got all 41 holes in the stringers filled tonight and epoxy'd the base of the stringers down.
For the holes I just bought wooden dowels and used plane jane resin to coat them and stuff them in the holes.

This stuff is sweet. Its about $20 a tube and I used 2 tubes. Its comes in a caulk tube and mixes in this crazy maze in the nozzle. Whats nice about this is that it comes out with some pressure so I was able to inject it so to speak up under the stringer wood and into holes/pits.... and you could see the wood getting "wet" right when it hit it, so it was absorbing well into it to make a strong bond. Tomorrow I will be laying 6oz glass cloth over the whole rear 1/4 of the boat to re-glass the stringers down. I will be using west systems epoxy 105 w/ 206 hardener.

So after setting the one gunnel support up and glassing it down with west systems epoxy.....i gotta say im very impressed with this stuff...
its super easy to use....no guess work mixing the resin and hardener...and its tough as all hell. I got in the boat and put some good pressure on it and it didnt budge or even make a sound...where the shit at home depot I would lay up several layers and the crap was very brittle.
I love this stuff. never again will I use anything else for my fiberglass needs. :thumbup:

i've wasted a whole night just trying to get my balancer off.....it needs to come off to put the new motor plate on.
i broke the puller i had....and then rented one from checker...and this one is bending and about to break.

I heated the balancer up with map gas...smokin hot heated.....and I am putting all my weight on an 18" breaker bar....nothing. wont even budge.

You have a 1/2 in impact wrench ? and air ? The impact gun always did the trick for me. Also I might be a little bit worried about the heating and messing up the crank seal.

If no impact you may even try putting the pressure on the balancer and take the wrench off and wacking the center screw with a hammer to maybe get it to break free, imo, which dont mean squat, it needs to be jolted off

i used 1/2" impact with air....max air pressure (like 140lbs).....its not even turning the push bolt a bit.

I always use anti-seize when I install my balancer, and have not had a problem yet.

You can use virtually anything, I use Moly Lube...I also use RTV on the key slot in the balancer....

I figure I have 4 days to go. 5 if I consider thursday, but im trying to reserve that for testing.
I have to do the following:
-mount motor (its just sitting on the rails currently)
-mount seat
-mount pedal assy
-mount gas tank
-wire gauges, ignition (using previous wire loom)
-run plumbing
-set up pump (ride plate/cradle, wedges, nozzle, steering)
after the fiasco with the balancer, i thought i was going to have to throw in the towel.....but this is starting to look very possible. The motor went in with a snap. I just dropped it in and it was dead nuts on. I didnt have to cut/shim at all.....dumb luck. Ralph and I spent hours dialing in a rail kit before.
If I really stuck to it, I could have all of the above done in 2 days. we'll see. ...just glad to see the light at the end of this tunnel finally.

You did a good job with the drawings/design Brad. If you give Billy (ironman) the right dimensions, the parts come out right, like yours. I knew when I saw the plates sitting here they would need a little work for your fuel pump (small notch), but it looks like you got it handled. :thumbup:

Actually, the fuel pump cutout was purposely left out in the design. I am a symetrical kinda guy when I design stuff and the designs with the cutout i came up with were just silly, so I decided to go with an electrical pump. ....well money is tight and I decided functionality had to over rule form in this case, so I cut it out.
One of my other ideas was to make longer spacers to clear the fuel pump.....that was great until I tried to put the balancer on :banghead:

X 2 BRAD on the above post.....You'lle get her done...On the balancer....bad puller/rust too...always use antiseize and sealer to prevent leaks in keyway for easy r&r next time.....Keep up the work :thumbup:

sorry i couldnt make it over last night ...got stuck at work later then i wanted and then my car didnt start have to get it towed home...think the computer went out no spark..fukn awesome!

Ran into some snags with the starter today. the one i had was a plane jane oem ford starter. it was struggling to turn the motor over with a fully charged battery. i drove to the other side of town to figspeed to pick up a new high torque starter....turns out it wouldnt work...the starter gear would come out, but not fully connect with the flexplate. so i did some calling around to ralph and paul cane (high flow dynamics) and went with a factory early 90's ford f-350 starter....which is fords oem high torque starter for an automatic tranny....which should work with the flexplate.
of course, i ran out of time and had to scoot off to work (with no sleep)....ill get it put in tomorrow morning. if it doesnt work, im screwed.

they gave you a sm blk ford starter, the same thing happened to me for memorial day, i had to pull the motor twice in the southwind tunnel, they almost look the same,

that explains a lot. When I called them, they asked if I knew if there was a difference between the two because all the info they had on it was it was for a 'ford'...no notes on the part number in the system for weather it was SBF or BBF. I pulled my starter and compared measurements over the phone and everything was dead on to what they had....and assumed it was for a BBF....and everything bolts up correctly, it just wont engage. so now I know. Thanks Jim!

What is the race schedule for Sat. and Sun. Thinking of running down for a quick turnaround delivery of moral support.

I am pretty sure the racing starts at 10am on Friday. The races are Friday and Saturday and there is no racing on Sunday.

Every parker race has been saturday/sunday started at 10am. vut they might have changed things up this year.

It used to be a 3 day event Friday-sunday. They decided to not race on sunday antmore that way people could get back home earlier

Ya what marc said.....thanksgiving weekend races are fri/sat...and if one of the days blows out, they will extend to Sunday.
I just woke up from a nap after being up for over 24 hours....headed out now to test the new starter.

Are the same classes running both days? If not who is running on Sat. I can't make Friday but Saturday might be a go.

Ride plate and cradle is done...getting the alignment right for the tap holes was a bitch...turned out perfect.

Brad showed up about an hour ago. Testing went great for everyone but us. Lost a coil down stream, broke through a fence to get to a ramp to get the boat out, got the truck stuck on the ramp but thankfully nick came to the rescue with 4x4 and 37s! Got the coil swapped at dusk. Ron made a couple passes an all seems well. Need to re jet in the am and check timing and go racing.
