Title: First Jet Boat Project- 1975 Keaton 18-J
Post by: RedRodder on August 28, 2010, 01:56:33 PM
Starting my first boat project this weekend. Acquired a 1975 Keaton 18j that needs a total restoration, but for now my funds will only allow me to freshen up what is there and have some fun. Came with a 455 olds attached to a berkeley 12je-a pump in it. was told it ran 9 years ago but has been sitting behind a shop in the weather since. I look forward to learning my fair share of jet boat knowledge and hope I have come to the right place. all the pieces are there in my project and I hope to be able to get it mechanically sound this winter. Does anyone have any words of wisdom to a beginner in this hobby?

The exhaust that apears to be on the olds at the moment looks like the old berkeley logs, from what I can see these don't pre-heat the water before it enters the block? I am used to the old hardin water logs, should I give the berkeleys a chance or trash em when the motor comes out?

I have rea a bit on the oiling problems of the 455 olds motors, is the best way to cure the problem to combine the high capacity pan, with the high volume pump, and run oil restricting pushrods?

really should put restrictors in the mains and can put new cam bearings with a smaller dia. hole will do the trick don't know much about restrict push rods good luck.
