Since I am stuck in a place that I can't boat year round I decided to make the best of it and start a new project. My last season ended with a drunk guy ramming into me when he tried to see if I needed help. Coil burnt out and I was drifting,

Took off the rub rail and cleaned the area a bit.

Next The carpet had to be pulled out and the gas tank removed.

did you save a chip of paint?
-
Then I cleaned the inside up to prep for the new glass. My idea is... After it get cleaned real well with acetone I am going to lay some mat in strips across the inside. Then I will fill the hole from the outside with chopped up mat followed by a couple layers of cloth. Then sand and prime/paint. Will this work, or is there a better way?

Did I save a chip? :o :screwy: ;D Yeah, when I pulled the bowl off ( different simultaneous project) Plenty of paint chips came off.

let me know if you still want to match the paint
-
Well this is getting close to being done...
but of course I had to fix a 2-3' section on the bow that was separating :banghead: from the hull
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg17.imageshack.us%2Fimg17%2F8025%2Fp1030326.jpg&hash=218de4dda2d252f332b62bbb8a95316db7369df8)

looking good!!
-
1st I cut out the bad area
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg26.imageshack.us%2Fimg26%2F1690%2Fp1030327d.jpg&hash=8db5c1200c81ea49fae4178f453e36499332239a)
and sanded the area down
[attachimg=#]
-
Then I cleaned it several times with acetone and layed some mat inside
[attachimg=#1]
Next, after that set up, I pulled a bunch of fibers from the mat and filled the hole from the outside and started the sanding.
[attachimg=#2]
-
Funny how I start thinking I am going to do one project and then get motivated to expand that project, followed by the insight to do even more since I have already started the last step... :banghead: :screwy:
So I pulled off the entire rub rail :o
-
I decided to go ahead and RE-cap the thing. As I got into it it seems that this boat had been "capped" before... Except they used bondo to fill and shape it. Of course it cracked in several places. I cut out about a 1/4" groove around the entire thing then shaped the hole to a "V" . And no, I didn't use a jigsaw on it :sly:
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg253.imageshack.us%2Fimg253%2F9421%2Fp1030447.jpg&hash=473a7d502688ccd67ef5a4a95084a67e08bf24df)
Next I filled the hole with a strip of mat and then filled with chopped mat and resin. I decided not to go as far out as Jrork did on his fine job due to the thickness of the inside layers.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg142.imageshack.us%2Fimg142%2F4980%2Fp1030455.jpg&hash=7591a85b161a2761de41a4eefa2f45fc15e2e638)

I more round of sanding and I will glaze the pinholes with Bondo.
I left the through transom exhaust holes for now as I have not gotten to run the lakes up here yet and don't know how they will be with OT headers.
-
Hell of a job! Amazing how one project leads to another and another!
-
keep up the good work... you're a no BS kind of guy. Just sees what needs to be done and does it!
-
i love the capped look!
The bow and stern on my cat capped:

I forgot about the "upgrade" ;) Thats an awful nice ride you got there, even if it's not a jet ;D
-
Damn that brings back memories. Congrats, it looks fantastic! Keep at it, summer is just around the corner.
Chemistry, very nice cat too......

Getting closer... However does anyone have the ultimate cure for my pinhole blues? I filled with bondo, then primer filler, wet sanded and dropped a couple coats on.
but as you can see there are lots of pinholes showing through :banghead: Just in the glassed areas though
-
Also prepping for the new pump. I am having a delima however, My old bowl has a stuffer and quite worn veins inside. New bowl is very clean but...
I cannot get the stuffer off the old bowl. I broke several drill bits, some are now in the holes and the SOB will not come out :banghead:
Guess I will see how it reacts without the stuffer and go from there >:(
-
Oops here's the pic

spot putty and use a razor blade to apply it if your good you wont have to sand it very much.
-
I think there is something wrong with me :screwy:
I have now elected to fix the bottom too. I am hooking up the pump so I can try and flip this thing now.

Couple coats of primer/surfacer, block sand, spot putty, primer sand and paint
-
Does the transom adapter need to be installed for support when flipping the boat via the pump?
-
Answering my own question, works fine
  I step forward, 2 steps back
Got the boat 1/2 way over, reached under to pull from the bottom, and POP :o
The front line came off and the entire weight of the boat fell on my fingers :'(
Then it " flipped the rest of the way over, releasing my fingers, and caught one of the legs of the cherry picker in the back and gouged pretty bad.
Well lesson learned, the VERY painful way, I shouldn't have a problem flipping it back once I finish the work on the bottom.
Fingers are intact, surprisingly I don't believe they are broken, just swollen double size
Thats going to hamper my finishing the bottom as it is my right hand
-
Progress!! ;D
The Damage :banghead:

Unrelated to the project, but I was looking at my loader and wondered if this looks correct
It seems pretty far below the keel line?(bottom of the boat) Is this normal? I NEVER had any problems with cavitation or unloading... I'm guessing it's 3/4 inch deep ???

Hey Chaz,
I think your loader is deep. I would think it would load funny (not funny ha ha). I am sure someone will chime in that has that same loder, but I don't like them below the keel at all...ever. But that's me, others may be able to validate reasons to do it, I cannot. :sly:
On another note, wow, talk about going balls deep into a project! You do know it's May, right? ;D
It's gonna look killer though. 8)

The season doesn't start here for 2 more weeks :banghead:
I can see snow from my front door :screwy: (on top of the mountains) I was told it has snowed on July4 here before
On a lighter note it has been in the 70's for the last couple weeks.
So tomorrow I will order all the primer/paint etc if I can't find what I want locally. I just have to keep burning the candle at both ends a bit longer :D

It is supposed to be 100* here on Sunday >:D
I have two boats in stages of disassembly, better get off the couch and do something, you're making me feel like a lump of poo ;D
I can't stand working a 12 hour day then try to muster up the motivation to wrench on the boat(s), you sir are my hero!..
GT
-
Well I only put in 8 hrs at my job, but I have been scraping and sanding until after 12am the last few nights. Took a break tonight (quit at 8), my arms feel like "poo" >:D
Going to fill in the circled low spots and re-sand with 150 tomorrow. Hopefully I can get some primer/filler around here and get that done at least before Monday 8)
-
It's looking great. Keep at it
-
May not look like it but this after about 60hrs of "fixing" the bottom. The last glazing putty is curing then a final sand at 220dry.
Next I will CLEAN out the garage and set up my plastic paint booth O0
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi626.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt346%2Fcrossbow422%2FP1030525.jpg&hash=d53c2f734869f51bd2f4694bca2a847a4846488d)
-
How much do you charge per hour? ;D
Looks good.
-
I understand why the experts get paid big $$$ to do this work. Even after all my efforts this bottom still has more waves than Havasu next Monday :o
This simple fix >:D turned into this. I just can't sit and think I did a half ass job and it still looks ok...
I need to feel I have done the best job I can in whatever I try. So even if this turns out looking worse than a quick fix and some rattle can to cover up I
will have learned something and be ready for my next ride.
Now, what color have I picked >:D ;D

-
OK, I cleaned and washed everything inside the new "paint booth". Taped off the bottom as I will be using a single stage on the bottom and BC/CC on the top and sides.
I put 1 coat of 2K ISO Free Hi Build Primer on pretty wet (got some runs) then let that tack up and and hit it again with another medium wet coat. In about 2 hours I will block sand it with 180 and spray another coat.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi626.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt346%2Fcrossbow422%2FP1030552.jpg&hash=257efe45afee26ba45c6b6862282800939cb8773)

looking good!!!! keep it up.
-
Yeehaw, looking good. Hows the fingers???
-
hey rork read thru your restore last night(damn thats long) boat looks great
-
Fingers are 75% better. :P
Next I guide coated the bottom and tried 220 wet on the 1st side. This took forever and was very messy
So I am trying dry for the other side. It seems to be a lot faster.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi626.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt346%2Fcrossbow422%2FP1030554.jpg&hash=33df3d4e7e9399f12d340b985cf408d8a4d0726d)
-
After I finished blocking the guide coat off, I sprayed 2 more coats of primer (had a few low spots, my body work was not as straight as I thought :P ) Then I wet sanded it with 400.
Now, it has been painted and just as I read my skills are poor and I should not have chosen a metallic for my 1st paint job ::)
I did, however, learn quite a bit. Gun settings needed to adjusted after the 1st coat... spray was too narrow and was causing striping. I got some runs... of course... and worst (imo) my air line was leaking a bit just before the regulator/water filter(at the gun). When I started the second coat water started dripping out of that connection and on to my 1st coat. I decided to keep going and finish the coat. Now I will wait 24hrs and sand the bad places out and try a couple more coats( with the line leak fixed :banghead:
Good from afar, but far from good
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi626.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt346%2Fcrossbow422%2FP1030570.jpg&hash=c6562c9d751686f6c1686e5ab2485c4fcae4b144)

Chaz
dont know what you are talking about. it looks good far away and close up from what i can see. very nice job and thanks for keeping us informed and with pics as you go. looking good man.
-
Lookin good Bro. Few things I used to do: put a couple nuts in the cup to keep paint agitated , very imoprtant w/ metalics. At the end of your coat go back and pull the gun back and fog a coat. When finishing I would put reducer in the cup and pull back again and dust a coat on to make metalics uniform, no tiger stripes. Over lap your strokes 50%
-
Thanks, I will try that O0
-
Looks pretty good from here ;)
Besides, you started with the bottom, if someone sees that there are flaws on the bottom of the boat, you have bigger problems than just a couple of runs :o
HD recommended a couple of nuts in the cup (hope he meant what I think he did ::) )
I would X2 that but use marbles, the harsh edges on the nuts can damage the cup and the threads will hold a lot of debris...
I would say a golfball, which we used to use on a siphon gun, but takes away too much paint volume, I used to have several metallic colored golfballs in the shop from doing that...Sold every one...
GT
-
While this sounds good to keep the paint stirred in an old siphon gun, I am using gravity fed HVLP guns and the marble would roll right into hole the paint goes in.[attachimg=#1]
-
Today I decided that it took me 1/2 a season to realize that there were purple stripes on the bottom of my boat after I bought it(from being painted ON the trailer) If I have issues with it later, I'll just lift it up and repaint. I have a LOT of left over paint. So it got pushed outside to cure in the sun until tomorrow. I also knocked out the runs, scuffed up, and repainted these tonight.

-
Hey Chaz, That pump is looking pretty darn good. Nice red.
-
How long did you wait between coats? Ya gotta sneak up on those edges, Little at a time and let it kick good before the next coat.
-
Looks awesome Chaz. Did you already say brand of the paint?
p-jet
-
Chaz,
You are turning off the water heater before you spray paint in there aren't you?
That pilot is always on and there is a pretty good potential there for an "event".
Looks killer!
GT
-
15-20 mins on bottom of boat between coats, less on the pump parts. Yes the heater and water heater get the gas shut off before I spray, don't want any blow outs. The paint is Restoration Shop AU for the bottom of the boat. Covers a bit thin but I like the color and the price.
-
Well I have been busy O0 Took me a while to get it "good enough". I could not let all my hard work on the cap job go to waste, and I ground it all out to a wider area and filled it back with more mat. The deck was very bad and had previous repairs I tried to help correct. I decided I did not want to inveest the time it would have taken to make it perfect(summers wasting away) I swear I am going to burn all my sandpaper after this project is done :sly: SO this is the before picture. Tomorrow I will shoot 3 coats of 2K primer, then guide coat and block it, followed by 2 more coats of primer and 400-600 wet sand.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi626.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt346%2Fcrossbow422%2F6-5-09002.jpg&hash=bc4003d4623ce21c45725e75841250f637b75123)
-
In case anyone is still following this "hole fix" >:D
Just about everything that could go wrong, DID yesterday when I shot the primer. My respirator took a dump about 3/4 of the way through. My gun plugged up and I was spraying about a 2" line with all dial at full open( then I figured out what was up maybe an hour later) I got the final coat on nice, but sanding the orange peel off after the guide coat is taking me a bit longer than I hoped. Have I mentioned how much I hate sanding now? Looks like a few pinholes and less than expected low spots on the deck to bring up a little and I'll be ready for the next round of primer. :)
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi626.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt346%2Fcrossbow422%2FP1030673.jpg&hash=52803a4f7890e43bcfac9ec63ad7831a22db3711)
-
What kind of primer did you use?
-
if you keep getting a lot of orange peel thin it out a little more and never go back over the lite spots put another coat on if possible.just my $.02 good luck
-
The primer is Kustom Shop 2K ISO Free Hi-Build. The Orange peel came from the clogged gun filter not letting enough primer out. Hence sprayed very dry and got the orange peel. I use a 1.8 tip in my primer gun, the coats on the bottom went on beautifully. The real problem was that I grabbed the wrong cup. I grabbed a partially cleaned one that was used for the single stage. All that film melted off and stuck in the gun filter. Since I am a newb at this painting stuff it took me a bit to figure it out. Changed the filter, cleaned the tip again, and switched to clean primer cup :banghead: The primer is now blocked and all the low spots and pinholes are filled. Tomorrow I will sand the filler off and shoot the last coats of primer. I am hoping to finish Sunday so the clear has time to harden before 4th of July weekend ;D
-
Shot the base coat tonight. I will be doing the clear tomorrow morning in about 7 hrs. Tech sheet says I have 24hrs to apply clear so that should give it plenty of time to flash off all the solvent. I got a couple runs
:( but I think I will just live with them and chalk it up to my 1st time painting ::)
Pics are with quite a bit of paint still in the air

very nice work, and well documented, you def went balls on this "hole fix", keep up the good work and keep the pics coming

Well, I have a lot of runs to fix on the sides and back  and some mild orange peel to colorsand, but overall I am satisfied with my 1st paint job. If the runs come out I will upgrade to happy.

looking good chaz keep it up

Hey Chaz, Looks pretty darn good for the first time around. What color is the base coat?
-
Looks really nice! You made a lot of headway in a very short period of time
Curious to see how she runs when back together 8)

Thank You! I put in a LOT of hours after work every day and weekends to get it here. I hope the clear is hard enough to take it out next Saturday.
Base coat is Restoration Shop from TCP Global. It is a bit thin but the metalic laid out easily. I got complete coverage on gray primer in 2 coats and put on one more just for safety. The color is called firemist red, it looks excellent in the sun, the picture does not do it justice. I used single stage of the same color for the bottom. It is a little harder to keep the metalic laid out correctly, it will "sag" or run the metallic if you apply the coat too thick. The clear is Kustom Shop 2k Super Flow Polyurethane Clear. It seems a little thin also at 40% solids by volume and did run on me even after a light tack coat was applied 1st. That could have been and probably was user error though. My lighting was insufficient when the fog got thick towards the end.
-
Firemist Red was a Caddy color. They had several Firemist colors and all looked like a great metal flake paint job. I shop TCP all the time. Great prices and service. Yeah, photos never really do colors justice. Looks great!

thats it chaz....... im sending my shit up for a paint job ;)
looks great man

Been trying to get this thing rigged for this weekend... :o
I am almost there, still need to finish the water lines, attach the carbs and fuel linkage, recheck all the bolts for correct torque, attach the wires to the lights and a few more misc odds and ends and it will be ready.
Only "hold up" was the U-Joint to the pump now seems to be too tight. I had what I considered a loose set up before as I could disconnect the 4 bolts from the PTO and slide the U-Joint towards the pump far enough to start the engine. I
It was difficult to slide it into place this time it is so tight. I am hoping that there is simply paint or maybe too much grease at the jet end that is keeping it from sliding back further, unless dimensions from1 JC pump to another can be that different :screwy:
Looks like it will have to go to the lake to get it's first fire up instead of on the hose >:(
-
Sometimes the splined yokes get a wear pattern in them from the shaft, make sure everything is nice and clean and check for a ridge, typically you want 1/4" to 3/8" of clearance from the end of the shaft to the end of the yoke to allow things to move around under different thrust conditions.
I normally use Mercruisers spline lube on the yokes, it pretty thick lithium based grease that isn't supossed to cake up, make sure not to mix different types of grease or it can emulsify and cause some problems with sticking...
Carburetor cleaner with the straw cleans out the shaft cavity pretty good and the new low VOC stuff does not seem to soften the seal.... ;)

Looks good Chaz - yer scoop's on backwards though
-
I know, I was forced to turn it around last year at El Capitan. Cop said if I didn't have flame arrestors it HAD to face the back. I don't beleive that is the law in CA, but it was easier to change it than go through the hassle of expaining the laws to the police... I will try and get it back looking "cool" O0 if I have time before I leave. It isn't exactly easy as the peices that lift it above the carbs are different heights. This makes the scoop look level and they are pop riveted in place.
-
The cop was right. O0
-
The way I read the law was in Cali if engine compartment is open and carbs are above gunwales no flame arrester needed. In Nevada and Arizona you need flame arrester OR a device that channels backfire out of boat away from passengers. I got fucd with about the scoop thing, didnt bother to try and tell the cop I have a pop off valve out back.

Looks great Chaz, nice work

Damn!
That was fast!, Came out looking like it took a year 8)
You will be sure to let us in on how she runs? :sly: ;)

Good job ;D
-
California law is (From page 37 of cali boating 2009 handbook) - in lue of a Coast Guard approved backfire flame arrestor you must have:
"A flame-tight metallic carburetor air intake attachment, located or positioned so backfire flames would be dispersed to the atmosphere outside the vessel. This device must be acceptable to the Coast Guard and be such that the flames will not endanger the vessel, persons on board, or nearby vessels and structures."
Hope that helps chaz...Boat looks F'in great, killer job!

It will stay facing back then until I get some arrestors. Now I need to figure out why I lost 1000 RPM's and a LOT of speed :banghead:
I am sure most/all of the problem is that I am running at 5100ft now. It pops like a flag blowing in high wind at all RPM's and backfires a bit on rapid deceleration. Looses even more power with increased popping with mild chop in the water :screwy: I checked the float levels and they were all full.
I was told I will have to decrease my jet size, and suggestions on where to start?
I think some of the RPM's may be from the new pump, but this thing just dogs or stalls now when I floor it. I thought maybe the carbs need cleaning like something came up the lines or it just got nasty from sitting over 6 months. I did notice that the rear carb did not seem to be spraying as much fuel with then engine off and just pumping the gas.
The plugs are quite brown now too...
Any Ideas?

I know when we use our boats at Lake Tahoe, there is a 20% loss in useable HP, we normally drop two jet sizes in the BBC with an 850 DP, and increase the timing to 38 from 36 * total, still won't pull past 4500 RPM and at sea level will run to 5200 RPM, so I think your battle will be won, but you'll lose the war :)
The popping seems bizarre, never had one pop at altitude, sounds like a lean pop which makes little to no sense. :screwy:
Maybe lack of ignition strength? coil failing?, loose wire or two??
Just random shots in the dark, my little jet will only do 65 MPH in Tahoe, almost 80 at sea level so losses I would consider normal, but not to your extreme.....

I took it out today and got the same thing...
So I decided to check the compression while I was sitting on the beach. All cylinders w/in 2lbs of each other @ 92lbs on one compression stroke. No problems there.
#7 and #8 plugs looked "oily" or perhaps sooty.
Pulled the scoop and filters and looked like hell in the carbs Black soot on EVERYTHING. Sprayed some carb cleaner all in it.
pushed the throttle and noticed that the rear carb was not spraying
Cleaned it out, had some gasket material blocking it.
Fired it up and remarkably better throttle response(of course) but still popping
Checked the cap for wear, nada, it has maybe 3 hours on it.
Decided to rotate the wires 1 place so I could get more advance than before, (tunnel ram hits the cap) wouldn't start. Went to put the wires back and noticed that #7 and #8 were reversed
I must have checked the firing order 3 or 4 times since this started and each time missed that. WTF I feel stupid.
Got in started and idled perfectly. Mashed the gas and 5250 RPM's and a hole shot I never dreamt of having; only had a worn out impeller before.
It did stumble a bit after maybe 30 mins of lake touring with my family just before it went on the trailer so I may have some junk in filters, but I think problems are solved for now.

Took this today also, kinda of bad after blowing it up but still was neat to see. Bald Eagle catching a fish.

Good pump, yeah?
I just built another one just like it ;)

Yes the pump made an incredible difference on the hole shot. I have nothing to really compare it to but my old worn out one though (haven't sat shotgun in many other jets, none where they mashed it from a stop) I will have to try and get a top speed now maybe next weekend. I should have the new jets in by then. Funny thing is that everyone said they loose RPM's at altitude and I have exactly the same with a tight pump and 5007 ft altitude today. I did lose the stuffer on the new bowl however, maybe that has something to do with it.

Stuffer really should not make any difference in RPM (not that way anyways), if anything, I think your making good use of the water you're pumping...You may have had some mechanical drag going on in the old coffee grinder ;D
I used to run that pump at 5200 RPM and in the light boat would be just a tick under 85 MPH but it wanted to step out the transom and was a handfull to drive (major bow steer), now has a full droop, a Place Diverter, a stainless A, plate loader and a stuffer, should be mo betta. we will see next month ;)
The problem I am going to have is I will have a loss of about 100 HP (put the old motor back in it) The retired race motor was a little over the top.
