Your answer will depend on numerous things. I know, not the answer you were looking for.
It is not necessarily about how many layers, it is about the thickness of finished job.
It is measured in "ounces". Are these full stringers? how square are the corners?, has the new wood been rounded and smoothed?
If it were me, I would shoot for a finished thickness of less than 3/16" near the bottom of the stringer not exceeding 1/8" at the top, this could equate to a couple of layers of Matting, the lighter the better and a finish layer of finish cloth, this will give the best results with the least amount of work, be sure to use plastic squeegees and maybe pick up some PVA mold release to protect it while curing.
You can use woven roving, but be prepared to spend some quality time with some sandpaper between layers...

okay. what will the release mold be used for and would a bondo speader do the job. my plan is to use a roller on the wood then put cloth on roll some more on. no this is a 1/4 stringer boat. yes the wood has been rounded and sanded on all sides with 24 grit sand pad. anymore help would be greatly app. thanks rusty

Bondo spreaders are great. :thumbup:, But remember, "Bondo" is a brand name, you are looking for filler spreaders or squeegees. ;D
The mold release does two things (only use it on the last topcoat of waxed resin) it keeps the bugs from sticking and allows you to use something like wax paper to ensure the finish is flat....
Make sure the weather is not too warm or cold.

talk to tom tonight got some good infor and set my stringers in tonight nice.tomorrow night will glass up the stringers. then hope to order my cables from tom next week. again thanks tom and GT for good information.

I need help with this, took out old rotten seats from a jet I picked up this summer. After removing the seats and the ratty carpet I saw a large crack along the inside driver side stringer. I was going to remove the old glass and redo it but the stringer and floor is rotted out :mad:. I removed all the rotten wood and the pass side stringer is good but the driver side from the front of the motor mount to just under the dash had to be removed. So after all that my question is can I splice in a new stringer or do I need to replace the whole thing front to back.... If you can help it would be great

should call tom at jet boat performance he gave alot of good information or pm GT JETS (glen) one of them will help. Also don't forget to put the boat on three stands when you do this one in the front and two at the back. Good luck

I am not a fan of splicing the stringers for a few reasons, but specifically, you really cannot ensure the remaining part of the stringer is not in the early stages of dry rot.....Also the grain patterns will never match up and there could be expansion/contraction issues...
Besides all that, you will not save yourself that much work... Nor will you save any money on materials, especially if you end up doing it again.. :banghead: My all time pet peeve BTW.

Thank you guys ill get on it. You said to put it on stands to do the work ? its still on the trailer would that be ok or should I take it off ?

You can leave it on the trailer, but I recommend blocking up the rear corners to the frame and getting the weight off of the bunks, also block the bottom of the vee at the front crossmember... :thumbup: I call that a redneck dolly.. ;)
