I just had the new bimini top made, new headers put on. And like an idiot I went through a LONG 5 MPH zone without water running through the headers... Needless to say it burned a big hole through my bimini and it's cover.............. Don't feel too bad, you're not the only one who has shortcomings.

bimini = $300, DOH!

What a stinking mess. After I got done throwing tools, drinking all the beer I could find and bitching at anything I could think of I closed the door to the shop and walked away.

Got up the next morning and wet sanded it down smooth again, wiped it down with nice clean paper towels as recommended by a number of folks and sprayed on a new batch of 2K. Yahoo! smooth as a babys butt... Let's hope that's as bad as it gets. I'm just thankful I made that mistake when I was just squirting primer and not the clear coat...

That so sucks to have to do it twice.

Did you have to sand it all off again?
Glad you kept your cool and only took it out on the tools and some beers

Have you figured out what your final paint colors scheme will be?

Nope, I only had to sand it smooth. I got up early Sunday morning after letting it dry all night and then wet sanded it with some 400 grit. Really didnt take that long and I was spraying late that afternoon.

Okay, I'll spill the beans on the colors and layout. This was not easy and I sketched many different colors and styles but I kept coming back to how much I like the old days in drag racing and loving reading and hearing about Ronny Sox row that 4-speed in the Sox & Martins cars. All of those were painted Red White & Blue.

Then in the late 70's I was involved with a buddy on his ProGas Camaro and it to was painted Red White & Blue. This was actually a 1970 car but we hung the the 78/79 (can't remember which) to make it look new. Nice car and that was the end of my racing days (kids, job, house, etc...)

So, here it is give or take. It's liable to change a bit but this is what I'm thinking. I may pull the swoop a bit further up and back (or I may not).

May not be for everyone but I think it'll look pretty cool. Obviously the trailer will be painted with some cool wheels and tires attached

Thanks. That's definately what I'm shooting for and I think that shiny blower motor will look bitchin back there. That is an old photo that I modified. I have a polished aliminum and white steering wheel that I've been running for awhile.

The old black steering wheel has moved on to bigger and better things.... It's mounted in this Unlimited Light Hydroplane.... Probably wishes it was back home

Thanks CC, I've guidecoated it one more time and am blocking it with 400 (again). I may squirt some 2K on a couple little spots and block that out but frankly, now I'm just being stupid.

I've began the color chip hunt for the perfect colors. The White is PW7 (Dodge Bright White) to match my pickup, the Red will be Chevy Torch Red WA9075 and the Blue remains a mystery. I have the color in my mind but I havent seen it yet.

Jan and I may go hang out in the mall parking lot and check out cars. Actually it was her idea and a damn good one. Jeezus what a peach...

John, I saw a really nice metallic blue on a Toyota the other day. I saw a Corvette red that really looks sharp too. Just my 2 cents. Greg

Yup, it's gonna be a challenge. Then I gotta figure out how much of each color to buy. I blew it big time when I ordered the SingleStage for the bottom (and the SpeedCoat). Ended up only using half what I had.
With the price of this stuff I HAVE GOT to get my amounts needed more figured out. As it is, I'm into this for over a grand and I haven't even bought the topcoats and clear yet........groan...........

I would buy extra, you could always use it on other stuff down the road!

I would stick with a paint code off of cars or trucks. That way when you need to touch it up from now you can get it easily.

When I painted my old 76 F250 black, just the paint and clear cost me close to $800.... Not to mention the $13k in the engine compartment.....

Yup, sounds about right. When you add all the sealers, epoxy's, 2K surfacers, fillers, cleaners and sandpaper, this is not a cheap project. I've started to price some of the paints and it's scary.
1 gallon of PPG Basecoat in white is about $350. In a color like red or blue its about $550. Gulp!!! Thant's not even including the clear......

You guys suck!!!! I was ready to spray and now you got me going back over it again. Ended up putting a thin skim of icing over where there is some slight (so stinking slight that you cant feel them but the black guide coat sanded with 400 over the gray shows them) depressions on the deck that line up where the bulkhead underneath runs. I've scuffed that down and am gonna let it shrink for a bit. I'll shoot some 2K tomorrow but I'm telling all you azzholes right now, it's your fault and you're gonna buy me a beer if I ever finish this POS and come down to the SoCalJetBoat.com region........ pricks

On a side note, I started penciling out the swoop. Right away I can see I'm not a Rteest........ Gonna have to get Jan out there for that one I'm thinking

As they were ringing up the paint for me, I noticed a good 20-25% of the cost was in taxes and hazardous waste fees!! Needed 1 gallon of black, 2 gallons of the Lexus "smoky granite mica" and 1 gallon for acrylic lacquer clear... Black was two base coats, smoky granite micah was the third coat, then the clear. I know next to nothing about painting a vehicle, but it looked really deep once it was done. I think I have 1 gallon of the Lexus "smoky granite micah" color left, only used less than one gallon...

Hah! If aint a POS now, it will be when I get thru with it.

After much scribbling on the boat and finally getting Jan out there in the scooter stool, we ended up with this. I love it and it's exactly what I had in my head. I just couldn't draw it (how come women are so good at that artsy fartsy stuff?).

I admit, you gotta squint but you get the idea. You can still see the straight line I drew from the back corner at an angle to check symetry (sp?) and she nailed it!

Undone, I know what you mean. This stuff is too expensive to buy extra but it's hard to figure out how much you "need". Your boat turned out stinking awesome. I'm thinking you know alot more than "next to nothing"....

I've got a roll of tracing paper and will tape it on the side of the boat and trace the line out. That way I can reconstruct this when I'm ready to spray and make sure each side matches...... Stay tuned and thanks again for the words of encouragement and watching this disaster come together.....john

I didn't paint anything, they gave me a list and I just bought it... On my boat or truck. I did a great job of ruining the paint on my old truck... The boat was the original paint from the manufacturer in 1985. I only did minor stuff with the engine and stereo. Cam, intake manifold, and carb were all done by Teague marine at the same time they replaced the engine... Scoop, MSD 6AM ignition, headers, oil pan, gauges, place diverter, impeller. Simple bolt on stuff, that's all I did.

in my gallery I have pictures of my old boat... I'm not sure he's got the right guy with the over-the-top boat... I just have a waterskiing direct drive towboat now. Had an 18' Caribbean before that. Nothing too special, just a Gen V 454 all prettied up, with a nice little bump to it.
