See you soon

Ian and I took the boat to the local lake (where they don't allow our kind of boats) to float it and see if I have any leaks, and make sure everything works.

Fired off instantly

Pump took a bit to get rid of the air and start moving water thru the motor but it got there.

Forward worked good

Reverse worked good

So, I figured I'd idle away from the dock for a second before coming back in

After doing a nice number of circles trying to figure out why it wasnt responding to the steering input I realized sumthin

Yup, steering was backwards!!!!!   Some dumbass (that would be me) installed the steering rack backwards...........Sumbitch

Do any of you have any idea how difficult it is to steer a boat into a very small boat launch and onto a trailer with backwards steering?

Now add a nice little audience to the scene and you'll have a general idea........

John,  You got it wet and it didn't sink.  Just flip the rack to the bottom side of the helm and you're good to go.  4 bolts and a flip.  Good going there my friend!  Greg

Looks fantastic on the water  ;D

Even with the steeing mishap I'm sure the audience was impressed with that beautiful boat.

If it's Teleflex, and I think it is, the rack should hang from the bottom of the helm's pinion gear.  Four bolts and flit it over.  I took photos before I disconnected anything and when I put it back new I just reinstalled everything like the photos and it was right on.

This is the before photo.  It sure use to be a mess under there.

If the helm pinion is facing down you don't have to do a thing to it, just flip the rack over and reinstall the bolts.

I see what your saying but the racks gear is only exposed one one side of the rack so if you flip it theirs no gear make scene are am i wrong.

You can flip the rack over and then the rack/gear is facing up.  really an easy fix.  The rack housing is made to spin on the cable housing end.  I'll go take a few photos of how the rack will flip over and the cable housing never moves.  If that will help.  The rack spins too.

The Rack end of my old Teleflex type system.  As you can see the cable stays the same but the rack housing and thus the rack flip over.  Now you can't just keep twisting the rack end, it has a limit of maybe 180 or so degrees.

Sorry about the high jacking of the thread John.

No worries guys.  I just flipped my helm (had to drill 3 small holes) and I was good to go in a matter of minutes.  I just thought it was funny that after all this, I put the steering in backwards......

John, it looks even better in the water. Nice work, you and your son must have been stoked. A few years ago I replace my rotary steering with the rack and did the same thing. I decided to stay out, we wakeboarded and skiied for the most stress filled 3 hours of my life. :screwy:
