I've started building the 545 for Slowride and am at the point of picking heads. The first limiting factor is the exhaust.... namely the Harman long bolts. Has anyone tried opening them up to CJ/SCJ port size and is there enough meat to do it? I'd like to run P51's or FMS SCJ-B's, but if I can't it's RPM's.

I'm overbuilding in case I want to go play in another hull, but for now I'll under carb and under cam it so it'll live in the cruiser.

Step 1 - get a D9TE block with a fresh .030 bore and toss a spare AirGap on it.

Step 2 - Scour the internet for the absolute lowest price on Super Cobra Jet heads (Tommie Vaughn Performance), and get them coming

Got a couple deals courtesy of couple board members. Got another set of Harman long bolts that will be modified so they can be port matched to CJ exh ports. The top of the ports will need about a 1/4" of fill (on the outside) to raised the port roof to match.
A bit more oil capacity sure isn't gonna hurt

Spec'ed out the cam today, price is excellent for a custom grind. Why a custom grind? Trying to get 600 horse out of long bolts......

No worries though, it'll be under the engine cover and the only way you'll know it's in there is the lope in the no wake zones.....

Details soon. The supplier is getting with the grinder to fine tune the exhaust side. With this grind being a split duration and lift, we can get around the logs to a degree. Need duration, but be aware of reversion. There's a lot going on with the fine details of this build, just want to make sure it's done right the first time.

That seams really mild for such a big motor..or am i just a big cam whore? Pretty close to the cam in my 402

It seems like most of us have had the same introduction into performance engines...... basically a stock engine that we "hop up". Put on an intake, headers, maybe a cam, but what we've learned was how to make more horsepower by trying to minimize engine shortcomings. How many engines are actually purpose built matching components? We would use a cam with more lift to compensate for heads that didn't breathe well. Put heads on with bigger valve and flow better you don't need as much lift.
I'm only looking for 600 horse with reliability which is why some parts of this appear to be over kill. Need a forged crank? Rods? SCJ heads? It ALL about the combo....

The plan is to break it in on the dyno, dial in the carb, and make a couple pulls. Don't know if we'll be able to run it with the logs. That'll depend on the shop and if it can be plumbed.
