Title: it's home!!
Post by: FORKEDUP on August 23, 2007, 09:03:26 AM
well the boat is finally home for good and i get to start putting it back together, so i figured a project thread was in order...a little history for starters, purchased boat with my father 15 yrs ago, it was a sanded down piece of fiberglass with nothing in it, (his dream boat, we have had 7 boats together) he got cancer, boat sat with new paint for 10yrs, cancer got worse, tried to get boat running before he passed away, did not happen, he did get to hear it run with a test motor though, finished boat, coming back from parker blew 2 trailer tires, tore up trailer pretty good, had new trailer built for boat, new trailer screwed up paint and front of boat, tore back down, decided to go diff with paint (as seen now), bottom was trued, prepped and gelled, then went to painter for airbrush, after 4mo of slow progress airbrusher fell asleep at the wheel on his way home, hit a wall a 50mph, he was in the hospital for another 4mo, no progress on boat, but thats ok, he is alive that is what is important, airbrusher can now walk (a little), slowly returns to painting the boat, so after 1.5 yrs the boat is painted and back in my garage, the above about my father is what brought about the name "forked up" because it is f'd up that my dad never got to drive this boat..i think he would be happy with it though.. now need to- wire compete boat, install steering, throttle, forward/reverse, jet, motor, plumbing, interior, bilge pumps, finish hole to underbow area, decide on what to do with floor (i epoxy'd it for now, doesn't look to bad), install motor mounts, throttle pedal, polish the hell out of everything and anything else if forgot.. what i got done, installed motor mounts, cleaned holes for gauges, started assembling pump, acquired all new nuts and bolts, epoxied floor, powder coating,  will update as progress is made :)

Very cool...looking forward to watching this boat become a masterpiece.

Daytona's are my favorite hulls. I will own one someday.

the crazy thing is ....i know "shadow" your airbrush artist, i have known him and his brother since 96, i was in his brothers club "regulators" untill 2002, and than started my own club " altered dimensions "....ya it sucked hearing about his crash, i think he ended up loosing his foot, he does really bad ass work, you just have to chain him up to your project to get it done,i have had some work done by him in the past..... i have been admiring the work on your boat and was wondering who did it, now i know.....he was in town here in cali last week but i didnt get a chance to see him......your boat looks great and good luck putting it back together......i have signed up for some airbrush classes here in cali myself i have done some minor work before, now i want to get back into it...im going to "RHINO" class soon, he is the painter on "cmt" trick my truck, he has a shop in anaheim.....goodluck to you again...

i am hoping to have everything done and ready for the water by the end of next month (i am slow, but i want it right) so we will see

chromey---yeah shadow did the work on the boat, hell of a guy and a fantastic artist, but like you said you have to chain him down and take his cell phone away, but when he is on watch out, shit is incredible, despite all our problems i would gladly use him again, he did not loose the foot, when the boat was done he was part time wheel chair, part time cane, sometime walker so it made it interesting for him to paint

Forkedup-

it is registered as a 1978 19', the only thing that has not been replaced is the fiberglass, i have 2 buckets and one rear bench for it, most of the time i only run 2 seats, but the bench is always with me, just in case a midget wants a ride, or a woman (thats all that will fit back there) :)

thanks for the compliments on the boat, just a quick update. spent sat and sunday in the garage working on it (kinda sucks when it 113 outside), got both tanks cleaned and installed, both fill caps cleaned and installed, pump installed, all transom dumps cleaned and installed, flapper drains cleaned and installed, started cleaning the motor, fixed the front of the trailer (they lost the u bolts when being painted), hopefully today i will have the wiring layed out the way i want it, bilge pumps installed, i am currently looking for a pond near the house that i can sneak into to check for leaks >:D :)
oh yeah, i had to help my mom move in during all this..
all the crap (shitty looking area under the pump) has been cleaned and repainted since pic taken

wanted a little bit of contrast, the bilge dumps are polished as well, but now that it is together i am trying to decide if i like it or not, might end up taking it back apart and having in done----that will be a project for later if i decide that way

Title: Re: it's home!!
Post by: FORKEDUP on September 23, 2007, 07:44:11 PM
all in all it went pretty well, she remembered how to float and only had a very slight leak at the steering shaft, (i tried to use the old bushing, my mistake) but a minor and easy fix, just made me want to finish it faster
Title: Re: it's home!!
Post by: FORKEDUP on September 23, 2007, 07:47:25 PM
let it float for awhile and the day was a success, then the wife had to ruin it for me :'(, i failed to notice that during the trip to the lake the cable that keeps the boat from coming forward into the bumpers on the trailer either stretched, came loose or something but the boat was against it and had been for awhile, the entire reason this rebuild started had just come back. F*@K S@#T PISS DAMN MOTHER F***** PIECE OF CRAP, i wanted to cry or sink the damn thing i could not figure out which

maybe replace the cable with a strap or something that wont do damage if its rubbing up against it.

maybe replace the cable with a strap or something that wont do damage if its rubbing up against it.

i just looked again....i guess i didnt understand what the problem was .....maybe still dont....

so the damage area is from where the boat is hitting that vertical bunk? and the cable that keeps it from hitting that bunk came loose?

what im getting at is if it were me, i would exhaust every possibility to fix the trailer to prevent this happening again before putting a rub rail on that beautiful boat.

the vertical bunk caused the damage, when i left for the lake i had the boat about 4" off the bunk with everything tight, i don't know if the cable stretched (i doubt it), came loose or what, i will be looking at that tonight, when i got home yesterday i put the boat in the garage and left it, i did not want to see it, trust me, i do not want a rub rail on the front but if i do go that route it will be something cool, polished aluminum or carbon fiber, something to that affect and only be in the middle between the forks (last resort though)

I gotta side with Brad on this one. That boat is beyond beautiful. Gotta be something that can be engineered so you dont have to put a rail on it. Good luck with it regardless and glad to hear it didnt get into the artwork

Fix the damage, then get yourself a sheet of clear vinyl sticker. You can order them from Factory Effex out of Valencia, CA. They'll have it shipped to your door in 3-4 days. I know the accountant over there so let me know if you're gonna go that route. The clear vinyl I think is 32 mils thick. I put it all over my old truck to keep it from getting chips in the paint around the tires. You could hardly tell it was there. In a low visibility place like that I would definitely consider it an option especially since it's white. They'll even do a color match vinyl sheet.

that sounds like something i would definatly (sp) be interested in, especially if they can color match, any one in particular i should talk to? or can you hook a brother up, i would only need about 3.5 ft by about 4-5" any help would be great, i want to get this done before anything else happens, and it makes me sick when i see it >:(, let me know-------thanks

Just called. The largest they have are 12"x16"  That was large enough for the areas I wanted to cover on my truck... I'm looking up some more...

I got a number for a guy in Texas. The vinyl is clear and 25 mils thick... Pretty damn THICK. I doubt you'll wear through it. The vinyl I had was only 10 mils.
His name is Chris and he'll cut to order.

I forgot to ask him if he had anything thinner.

made a little more headway the past couple of days, all wiring is finished, msd box installed, throttle linkage attatched, foot throttle installed, st wheel installed, coil hung, connected the battery to check everything, fuel pump worked, bilge pumps work, bumped the starter, all is looking good so far, new balancer should show up wednesday, then need to install it, find tdc, install dist, spark plugs, headers, recheck everything and i should be ready to put gas in attempt to start the damn thing, set the interior in tonight just to get an idea, it is definatly getting redone, the purple pipping looks like shit and does not match the boat, and no the backseat will not be staying in the boat >:D, tomorrow it gets to come out of the garage for a much needed wash and wax and start polishing everything again, here are a couple pics from tonight

Man, does that bring back memories of tremendous fireballs out of the carb on a coupe I built years ago.  Come to think about it, that was the start of Jan getting gray hair too... >:D

same boat, one of my buddies that has a daytona with an o/b had been leaving notes on that house for about 6mo trying to buy it but never heard back from anyone, then we saw it in the paper and immediatly bought it, buddy was pissed, but it works out that now i work with the guy that we originally bought if from and that i new him when we bought it just did not realize it (my dad went and picked up the boat without me)

i remember seeing the boat, and we always wanted to stop and ask about it then one day it was gone.saw it in the trader, they sold it pretty cheap if i remember correctly.
Title: Re: it's home!!
Post by: FORKEDUP on January 11, 2008, 03:30:46 PM
it was a great price, but.....the advertised price did not inlcude going to the shop and picking up the jet, and pay for the rebuild and all work done to it, going to another shop and scrounging up what they had left of the motor, and paying them for it, about all it covered is what you see in the pics, but like i said, it was a great price and has a hell of alot more invested in it now ;D

well got the carb issue squared away, pulled my head out of my ass and set them correctly ;D, decided tonight what the hell lets put some fuel and ignition together, after cranking a couple a times with nothing (realized i never plugged the dist in ::)), hit the throttle once, hit the key, motor rolled over  a turn or two and

IT'S ALIVE ;D :D :o
[/color]

started right up for me, scared the shit out of me, i wasn't expecting it to actually start :o, still had it all the way in the garage, blew everything on the work bench all over the place, still need to install alternator, breather tank, air cleaner, polish the hell out of everything, fine tune it, but it runs :)

100% comitted to parker, 5th person on the list i believe, time already scheduled off work, and looking for a place to park the toyhauler, i have some friends with a rental in the keys so worst case i will stay with them. but i am stoked about getting out there and meeting everyone (the beer also), i  think i am going to try to do havasu in the beginning of may as well, no progress on the boat, yesterday was a bust. 4 1/2 hrs and onlly 1/2 the oil out of the boat, going to lift the motor today and do it the right way i guess :)

Boat looks great. Glad to see the alternator fit. It does look, however, like the pulleys dont quite line up. In measuring things up for my plate/rail setup, I discovered that the mounting point for the alternator on my old 4-point front mount, which worked perfectly for a GM alternator, was 5/8" forward of the block face. That means that with a 3/8" front plate it would take a 1/4" spacer to get the pulleys lined up. You might want to look into this. Hate to see you throw a belt. :)
Title: Re: it's home!!
Post by: FORKEDUP on January 27, 2008, 11:44:07 AM
its an optical illusion (sp), the belt looks to be way off in the pics, but i do have about 1/4" +- of spacer behind the alternator pulley leaving me at most 3-4mm off from perfectly straight, i agree i do not want a belt coming off at high rpm, especially with all the hoses sitting there :) i don't think that amount will affect me but if i am wrong please chime in now and save me the hassle later ;D

Crap!!!   I started catching up on this thread and was thinking about what I was going to post to show how impressed I was on the looks of that boat in the water........then I read you were polishing it up to sell it and I couldnt believe you'd be able to walk away from that beautiful boat...........and then I read and see that you have you motor tore down.... Damn man, you're killing me.

Sorry to see you have some problems with the motor but I'm sure you'll have it fixed in no time............good luck.........john

motor issues are nothing major, found some water in the oil, so decided to fix it while i had it out to redo the floor, just giving it new headgaskets and such, had some oil leaks at the parker gathering, fixing those, block checks good and heads check good, i know i am the cause of the water problem (put to much water pressure to the motor), yes it is going to be VERY hard to sell this boat, but i am going bigger and better which is what my dad and i always did with the other boats so i know he would approve of my decision. And once i have the new boat i will immediatley be looking for a new project, maybe a gullwing  :)

thanks for the compliment jrork,   i cannot wait to see yours in the water!!

floor is done, f-it, i don't care anymore, i hate resin, i hate paint, i hate sandpaper, i-hate boats, ok not really, but the floor is finally done, i will start putting everything back together in about an hour, 100 degrees with ungodly humidity in a garage with no a/c sucks ass, swamp ass factor 1000000000.
some pics of the progress, give me your input please.

unfortunatley (sp) it is true, we came to an agreement last night, forkedup is involved in a trade for his boat, 2000 26' open bow with mid cuddy, 496, bravo 1, big system, great boat for the family, he has a couple loose ends to secure on his end and then she goes with him, will happen in the next week or two, we have been working on the deal for about 1 1/2 months now, i will get pics of the new boat as soon as it comes home.  i actually sat in the garage last night and shed a tear at the thought of the boat no longer being there, but it is what is best for the family, and i have already talked to the wife, in about 6 mo or so i will be looking for a 21' daytona to build, forkedup II :), dad would be happy with the deal :)

i am very happy with, of course there are some things i want to change, to personalize it a little, but the boat itself is pretty clean, its a 2000 so it is now without it flaws, but    its  a  boat
