Picked up a 78 Nordic with a jet o vator on it and the previous owner kept braking the cable on it so he rigged it to just stay straight. Anybody have any info on these. Should I get a new cable and try it out or just ditch it and get a place diverter

Looks similar to mine but you'll need a new tube and probably a new cable.
-
I'm probably going to switch to a place diverted if I can't get mine to work properly too.

Try loading my picture again. Don't see it on previous post.

Yeah looks the same. Does you do the same thing ?

No mine goes straight and down when I want it to go up. Working on a resolution as quickly as possible. I hate having it in the straight position, ugh.

Let me know what you come up with. Not sure if I wanna buy a new cable and try it or just buy a place diverter and run it

Anybody else have any thoughts

If you switch to a place diverter I think you will have to rotate the bowl 45° to the oil fill ports are on the top because the pins need to be up and down.

That Berkeley jet O vater style trim set up was intended to be used with an electric motor. When converting to a manual cable and floor handle the action becomes reversed, so up on the handle is down and vice versa. There is a correct way to set that trim up with the new style cable... Check in your bilge and see if you have a steering shaft with a spring on it, and a clamp to hold a 43c cable.
This is the first step. Then make sure the stainless exterior steering brackets are the correct size. Also, many cables were drilled and secured thru the transom cover... This is where the cable always breaks.
There is a much better way to secure and make the trim work as smooth as a
Place Diverter.
Take a picture of your pump, from inside the bilge, just above the water cooling hose to the engine.
This will reveal where your problem lies.

Awesome thanks for taking to the time to explain that. It's makes more sense now. I'll take a picture tomorrow and post it and let me know what you think

First, that block spacer needs to be removed, then you have to locate a spring for that steering tube. Also, you will need a clamp bracket for a 43c cable...
Do you have the shift cable already?
...are you wanting to keep the original vater? And prepared to buy the parts you are missing?

I do not have the cable just the old one that's busted. The cables are 105 bucks so I'm trying to see if the jet o vator is worth it or should I just put that towards a place diverter

You're the guy that beat me to it!! Fucker! Lol. Good find. Surprised it was for sale for so long. I hesitated. I was gonna fix that on the boat too. My guess is he had it rigged all wrong. I'd go electro-hydraulic my previous boat had it and it is well worth it!!!

Yes, the cables are pricey... But you will just keep buying them as long as it rigged incorrectly.
In addition to the cable, you are missing some other parts as well.
If you are interested, I have a complete black new style place diverter with cable, handle and everything you will need...
550 plus shipping
Or, if you want to spend let to get what you have working, I have those parts as well.

Listen to this guy. He really knows what he's talking about. Just got a place diverter set from him and he answered all my questions.

Do I need to rotate the bowl in order to put the place diverter on ?

Yeah haha. I actually didn't leave with the boat from his house. His wife actually did the negotiating and we couldn't agree on a price so I left. About an hour later the dude text me and said they would except my offer. I told him cool but you gotta bring the boat to me now and he did

Sent from my iPhone using SoCal Jet Boats
Yes, you will need to rotate the bowl of that the pivoting pins are vertical as opposed to horizontal like it is currently.
With some effort and well placed pivoting sockets, you can do this with the motor and pump still in the boat.

Okay maybe just use the jet o vator this season and go place diverter next year. I'm gonna check in the box of stuff the po gave me and see if I have all the parts for it. I found the big spring yesterday

So I finally got a chance to take a look at the pump and see how the jet o vator works. I am confused as to where the other end of the cable attaches to the pump to move it up and down. The po gave me the parts needed to put it back together with a new cable but like I stated I'm not sure where the cable connects. This is my current set up where the po has rigged it to not move which I don't like at all. Any help or pics would be great guys

That's the 43c cable clamp I was referring to previously. The end of the cable normally is bolted thru the transom cover. There is a better way to do this, to prevent future cable breaks. And it also provides better up and down motion.
Contact me if you'd like me to explain over the phone... Way to much, and too complicated to describe typing.

I have that same clamp on mine from what it looks like. Thanks rush I'll pm you when I'm gonna take it all apart and get the cable for it. I have the old cable that he gave me so should I just get the same cable ?

Your picture does not show that same clamp for the cable... Not the spring retainer with one single bolt on it. Look at his picture again, it's the clamp with the two Allen bolts holding it down.
I can't tell you to buy the same cable since I have no idea what you have. The correct cable does not have threaded sleeves on it (43c).
Also, to make it work without breaking again, you will need additional parts.

Finally got a chance to pull apart the rigged tubing the po had put on to keep the jet straight. Starting to see how this thing works when hooked up. Still unclear on where the cables hooks up to. Anybody have pictures of how there's is set up ?

Also I was looking at my bowl and it looks like someone has already turned the bowl. Is this how it's supposed to be turned to fit a pd ?
Sent from my iPhone using SoCal Jet Boats

No on a pd the bowl stays in its normal spot. On jet o vator it rotates so yours is already rotated

Place diverter gives you a 100$ credit if you trade the old unit in.

Well picked up a new 43c cable from Rex marine and put it on today. It took a while to get it adjusted right but I think I got it good now. I noticed that when the arm connects to the nozzle it doesn't line up correctly so I used spacers and adjusted the a on the steering tube better so it doesn't bind. It's pretty smooth now so I'm hoping that was the reason the po kept breaking cables. I also was looking at the nozzle and noticed it goes further down then up. Is that normal ?

Are there any ways to improve the jet I vator ? Can you put a wedge on it ?
