Title: Kona Badge Aluminum Casting
Post by: povertyjet on January 06, 2009, 08:04:35 PM
...so as you all probably know by now, I have been trying to buy some Kona Badges.  No one seems to have them....soooooo.....I was wondering was if some of you fellow Kona owners would mind taking a couple of detailed pictures of the badge and give me some dimensions.  I may be able to sand cast these in aluminum myself...Even better would be if one of you with a project Kona would loan me a badge to make a mold from...

thanks
Frank

My nephew has an 18' Kona, I will try to get over there and snap some pics...

I have a couple of badges. When you're ready to make some molds, let me know, i'll lend you one.
Keep in mind that in the mid 70's Kona's were one of the first to have a sticker name plate. You could spot a Kona a mile away, with its name in chrome tape. They may have even been that ultra cool prism tape.

thanks for the pic JW.  Looks like you have the 20' mini too.  I have the prismatic tape stickers, but they are looking pretty weak so I want the cast emblems.  Looks like the font and the size is the same.
76, I will PM you later, and thanks.

I have mine off of a 71 18', but they are smaller than what is posted above.  On mine, below "Kona" there is a box that says fiberglass unlimited.

I have the same badge as Kona Cole. JW's is probably the one to do the cast of.

thanks Cole for the shot, and Bonneville for the stuff.  I am learning about building a home forge fired by charcoal briquets and a shop vac...I will use the steering nozzle that got ruined when I put on my diverter for the aluminum...when I get to that stage.

Okayyyy. Fire briquets and a shop vac. Anyone else see someones homeowners insurance NOT paying off?. This has all the makings of a You Tube moment if ever there was one!

Title: Re: Kona Badge Aluminum Casting<<<-----UPDATE!!
Post by: povertyjet on February 03, 2009, 04:57:52 PM
I think I found a solution...waterjet

This is 1/8" aluminum, not bad for a first run

[attach=1]

This could be done for almost any emblem, then polished, anodozed or powdercoated...
I think I might try stainless next.

Looks like thats the way to go. Polished stanless would look sweet.
You got a friend that does that or are you paying for set up and cutting time?
Title: Re: Kona Badge Aluminum Casting
Post by: povertyjet on February 03, 2009, 06:11:33 PM
I found a guy, just working on pricing...They program the jet with CAD files that I prepare.

Post by: 76 Bonneville on February 03, 2009, 06:23:45 PM
Thats great, that you can do the file for them and send him the disc. All you've got is the cutting time. Can he cut it with a bevel to it or just straight cuts.
Title: Re: Kona Badge Aluminum Casting
Post by: povertyjet on February 03, 2009, 06:44:56 PM
I had actually just sent the file to him to get some pricing, and he cut it and sent me the pic.  I sent him a pic of the one you gave me to see how more detail might be added.
Title: Re: Kona Badge Aluminum Casting
Post by: povertyjet on February 04, 2009, 07:33:39 PM
They can cut the bevel edge, but to add any more detail would be expensive.  Stainless is next.  Anyone have any interest in having an emblem made?

poverty, so how much are these going to run? i know your guy will probably be cheaper the more that he makes. what is a round about price for a nice pair?? definitely still interested

so is this guy in HB?
Title: Re: Kona Badge Aluminum Casting
Post by: povertyjet on February 09, 2009, 02:30:20 PM
If you send me your Nordic (or any other) badge, I will take good care of it and return it after I do the CAD drawing.  I would send you a pic of the badge before you buy it...sound fair?
The price for the 1/8" aluminum Kona badge is $35.00 + shipping.  I am still waiting for the stainless price.  Price is based on the complexity of the cut, and I will let you know if there are any changes.  Keep in mind, that these badges are not going to be exact duplicates.  I have Tahiti badges to copy.  Maybe I could trade you my CAD time for something I need for the boat.

hey poverty, i just accquired a 71 -73??? not too sure, 18ft Kona and there are no badges on it, so if you get a run made I would totally be into a set- For any other kona owners- my new project has no serial stamp on the back but it does have a badge pop riveted in by forward reverse lever that says JRS Fiberglass unlimited.  Is that the Kona deal- If I am not mistaken Jerry Baker owned and started Kona with a partner??? which could be the "R" in JRS-  any thoughts????

the nordic badges arent for me i just wanna donate to the cause it is truly at the discression of the guys needing the nordic badges...as far as the tahiti badges go im interested once i get the boat back to how i got it "running"
Title: Re: Kona Badge Aluminum Casting
Post by: povertyjet on February 09, 2009, 06:53:24 PM
I can draw anything on CAD.  This deal is a pay as we go thing.  When you are ready to go for the Nordic (or any other brand), send the badge, I will do the CAD stuff, and we go from there...if you want a Kona badge, send me the dough and I will get them cut.  If you feel compelled to compensate me for my CAD time, I need a remote OF adapter for my 455 and a long list of other necessities.

Mine is a 1971 and it has JRS stamped into the tag by the foward reverse lever.  It also says fiberglass unlimited on the badge.

The badge you see in this post is the Kona badge you would get..It does not have the Fiberglass Unlimited, Westminister Calif.  My '73 only has prismatic decals...

Price should be about the same, $35.00 each

$35.00 each is for aluminum, still waiting on the stainless price
