Does a vacuum leak cause detonation?

Anyone?

I had a mechanic briefly look at the engine in the Mach 1 this morning (he's here to fix the family boat's water pump and eratic running condition). He said it looked to him like there was a bad vacuum leak on that cylinder. He asked if the heads were surfaced (yes), asked if the block was surfaced (yes), asked how it idled (didn't idle very well at all), asked if it had any popping out the exhaust (yes), I then showed him the cylinder head and he looked at the gaskets and said that he could tell the gasket wasn't sealing and then he showed me how he could tell.

Wouldn't it be great for my wallet if the piston melting wasn't my fault? (Hey! A guy can dream can't he!?!)

Pray to the engine Gods for me, would ya'?

BTW, I trust the engine's builder and he'll tell me the what's and why's and how's that caused the problem. (But pray to the engine God's for me anyway.)

A vacume leak, did you call Hover on this ?
I have no idea hat I am talking about but I asked my daughter and she says.
Actually a vacume leak will cause a particular cyl to go leen if it is at the intake to head area, if if is at the carb to itake it will cause all cyl to go lean at high rpm.

I'm waiting for the engine builder to call me so I can bring my engine back to him. I'm ditching the crank driven alternator and moving the engine back ~6 inches. I'm eventually going to put a back seat in it. When $ permits I'm ditching the Dominator pump and I am going to put in a Berkeley with a stainless B impellor in it. That's about it.

Did you test your boat out yet?

It went out 2nd day yesterday.
What bore size is it? Stock rod length? Part # ....I'll check through some extras for you.
If I have one that will work...it's yours. With the xeption of one motor i've always raced BBC.

Good to hear BAE 557, when are you going to hit 170? I read over on HotBoat somewhere that the fastest jet is around 164...

I dropped the engine off at the engine builder's house, stood around while he tore it apart, #2 piston is completely waisted and the cylinder got scored pretty bad but the builder said it will be fine for my ap., the parts are probably at the machine shop still...

I've been working on this

for a friend while I'm waiting for my jet boat engine.

The engine's builder went through a lot of different reasons as to why something like this would happen to an engine. He's charging me $200 to tear it down and put it back together again. For $200 and my lack of knowledge it sound s like a deal to me. If it happens again...

You didn't need to 2nd Day that $, no worries, they're just sitting in a box waiting for you...

The builder said it won't be a problem to match the waisted piston up, .030 bore, stock rod length, Sealed Power forged, can't find the part number 23__... I've got another smoked BBC that came with the boat, that one is a two bolt main, cast crank 454, missing one rod and two pistons. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with that engine yet. I was going to use it for a winter project but I think I'd rather work on this...

When testing the pop-off over Labor Day, I did a 300' run and the boat has never hooked harder. I believe the next time out will be full throttle assualt to the count of 6 which should produce positive results.

What is the time frame for your deal to hit the water again?

I got a text tonight that the engine is done, again. I need to pick it up tomorrow.

I was using 1/2 of the gas 87 octane ( I had my reasons) , 1/2 of the gas 91 octane, and 1 can of octane boost per tank (11 gallons each I think ), it melted a psiton. I guess at the least I should go to 91 and octane boost, I'm definately not going to run any 87 in it anymore. It has somewhere close to 11: 1 compression, any suggestions on gas/octane boost? Thanks, in advance.

I'm going from a Holley 800 mech sec DP to a Holley 830 mech sec DP, differences are the 30 cfm and the 830 has bigger annuaral (sp?) boosters. I'm going to keep using the HEI because it's simple and there is no reason why it wouldn't be adeqoute to do the job of ignition. But I have a MSD marine dist, a MSD 6AL, and a Blaster 2 waiting for it.

If it doesn't break 65 mph

this time then the pump is coming apart. Last time it was 49 mph at W.O.T..

I have been working on my '32. I am currently having problems with the sheetmetal I am working on warping due to heat. Specifically the door jams I am building. They need to be "right". I need to figure out how to straighten twisted and bent metal using heat and water and restrained force. I have forgotten more than I remember. I may have to redo it all and work slower next time.

So many idea's, so little money, ...

I'm assuming you're "stitch" welding the sheet metal in your jambs? Are you using MIG or TIG? or OXY/ACET? If you're using any of these systems and still getting warpage then maybe your heat is too high, also don't use water to "cool" the metal (unless you're adept at metal shrinking) I use a wet towel on the areas around the weld, it acts as a heat shrink. Let the metal cool naturally.

Here's a pic of the last hotrod I built;

I'm using a 110 mig w/no gas (flux core wire). I've never been taught what stitch welding is but I tacked it (over and over), first about 3 inches apart, then I put another good deep tach in the middle of that, etc. etc. etc. the whole time moving along the ? 2 1/2 ? foot long door jam. It took me about 20 minutes to weld the jam onto the door skin. I remember a lot more now that you've typed the above. Thanks.

The jam slightly twisted and curved during the process of welding it together.

A very rough photoshop draft of my goal. Different wheels and tires (15 X 5 smoothies in front with 15 X 10 smoothies in the rear, caps and rings). Longer bed on mine too.

I've heard Marc say about 1,000 and 1 times "you're going to regret cutting that top off". I just don't want it to look like the other million flat black '32 - '34 ford pickups out there. I've got it figured out in my head how I can have a hard top roadster convertible, top on or off whenever I want it and look cool at the same time. IMO. But first the warping problem needs to be solved.

Have you tried posting pics on the HAMB? There is a PLETHERA, or however you spell it, of info and guys that can lead you in the right direction...As far as the top goes you got one thing on ever other 32-34 out there thats black primer...A real steel car!
